Iconic cricket umpire Dickie Bird has passed away at the age of 92. Known for his warmth, eccentricities, and unmatched umpiring skills, Bird officiated in 66 Tests and 76 ODIs, including three World Cup finals between 1973 and 1996.
His final Test at Lord’s in 1996, where Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid debuted, saw him receive a guard of honour. A proud Yorkshireman, he also served as Yorkshire’s president and was fondly called a “national treasure.”
Beyond numbers, Bird’s legacy is one of humility, joy, and sportsmanship, making him one of the most admired figures in cricket history. He will be dearly missed.
