'EVERYONE WANTS CLARITY' OVER MAN CITY CHARGES, SAYS ARSENAL CHIEF

Everyone in the Premier League wants clarity and a speedy resolution in the case against Manchester City which features more than 100 alleged breaches of its financial rules, says Arsenal chief executive Richard Garlick.

An independent commission is yet to publish a ruling, more than a year and a half after a disciplinary hearing concluded, and three and a half years since City were first charged.

City have always denied wrongdoing.

When asked if the length of time the process was taking was frustrating Arsenal, Garlick told BBC Sport: "It has gone on for a while.

"Everybody - the league and the teams - would want the clarity around what's going to happen next.

"But it's not something that I can control. It's not something that I can speculate on.

"And I just hope that there is a solution very quickly."

Garlick's comments come on the eve of the new season and after Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said: "I do accept it's taking longer than expected, and I understand that people want to find out as soon as possible what's going on, but I simply can't provide that."

Describing the case as "hugely complex", Masters added: "Our rules are very clear - we have to follow the process, and there's only one real clear route through, which is to allow that process to reach its natural conclusion."

Privately, officials at a host of other Premier League clubs BBC Sport has spoken to in the past 24 hours have also expressed their frustrations, while acknowledging that this is an independent process which is running on its own timetable.

One said the Premier League should be "actively seeking to put in place a better system" to ensure speedier resolutions.

Another made the point that given that the league spent £45m on legal bills during the 2023–24 season on disputes over its financial regulations, there are mounting concerns at the spiralling costs of such a long legal fight.

The charges City are contesting relate to the:

• alleged failure to provide accurate financial information, including details for player and manager payments, from 2009-10 to 2017-18 seasons

• alleged failure to comply with Uefa's financial fair play (FFP) rules from 2013-14 to 2017-18

• alleged breaches of Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) from 2015-16 to 2017-18.

City also face multiple charges that they failed to co-operate with the Premier League's investigation between December 2018 and February 2023.

Champions Arsenal were Premier League runners-up to City in both 2023 and in 2024 when they were beaten by just two points.

Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham reportedly served legal notices on City in 2024 reserving the right to seek compensation if the club are found guilty, with some said to have estimated potential losses of more than £100m.

They may also have been encouraged by Everton being told in June that they must pay Burnley £35m in compensation over the impact of a breach of the Premier League's financial rules.

Analysis

While most would argue that Garlick is simply articulating how almost everyone in English football feels about the length of time this saga has hung over the Premier League, it is still rare for a senior figure at a top club to break ranks and say anything publicly about the case.

Last year, the former Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said it had gone on for "far too long", but until now that was an isolated intervention.

It is no surprise that City's rivals are frustrated.

The club has spent £151m so far this summer transfer window, including a club record £116m for England midfielder Elliot Anderson.

They have also spent almost £700m on new players since being charged in February 2023, and have won six major trophies in that time.

Meanwhile, they - and other clubs - remain in limbo.

Are Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri for sale?

Meanwhile, Garlick insists Arsenal are not actively seeking to sell homegrown talents like Myles Lewis-Skelly or Ethan Nwaneri, but that the Premier League champions would "consider" the "right opportunity" for both the players and the club.

Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri - both 19 years old - have been linked with summer moves away, including to rival clubs in the Premier League.

Their 'homegrown' status, having progressed through the ranks at Arsenal, means any sale would allow the club to book pure profit in its accounts, helping balance the financials in a year when the Premier League moves to a new Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) rule of spending controls.

The new rules mean clubs can spend 85% of their revenues on fees, wages and contracts but the number drops to 70% for clubs competing in Europe.

When asked if the club needed to sell players to help comply, Garlick said: "Every club now has adopted a player-trading model. The way in which football is and the fees involved, it makes sense for you to trade players and to generate revenues through those sales.

"I won't say it's a necessity, but it's only a matter of good housekeeping that you do look at those opportunities when they arise, and as long as they're right for the club, then that's something that we will explore."

When asked if he wanted Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri to stay at Arsenal, he said: "I can't stop other clubs being interested. Myles had a fantastic end to last season and has started this one really well. We're very, very happy with him.

"Ethan has had a great pre-season as well and it's just a case of looking at what opportunities there are that will help both of those in terms of their career moving forward.

"We are not actively looking at selling those homegrown players but if the right opportunity came up - right for them and the club - we'd obviously consider that."

Despite signing Bruno Guimaraes, Arsenal have tried and failed to bring in Vinicius Jr and missed out on Morgan Rogers this summer in what has been a muddled transfer window, but Garlick remains hopeful of further additions "that are going to improve the club".

"As you are competing for Premier League titles or Champions League trophies, you need to bring in a certain calibre of player. And I think that that pool of players is smaller now than maybe it was a few years ago," he said.

"We've got a really competitive squad and if the opportunity came again in the next couple of weeks for us to add a player that's going to improve Arsenal, then we will look at that."

Garlick also expressed confidence around the contract status of manager Mikel Arteta, with the title-winning manager into the final 12 months of his current deal.

"Mikel wants to be at Arsenal, we want Mikel at Arsenal," he said.

"It's only a matter of time before we put that into a new contract. Everyone is confident and calm. We're just navigating a transfer window and I'm sure Mikel's contract will be resolved shortly."

Hayden Panettiere made a heartbreaking admission about the daughter she shared with former fiance Wladimir Klitschko in her final interview, which was published just weeks before her death.

The American actress, who began her career as a child star before landing roles in shows like Heroes and Nashville, has died at the age of 36. In a statement, her heartbroken father Skip paid tribute to her as an "incredible light and a force of nature" and said her death was an "unimaginable loss".

Panettiere was previously engaged to former world heavyweight boxing champion Klitschko, having met him at a book launch in 2009. After they began dating, they split up in 2011, before rekindling their relationship two years later.

In October 2013, they got engaged, with the actress giving birth to their daughter, Kaya, the following December. However, it was confirmed in 2018 that the couple had split again, but remained on amicable terms.

That same year, Panettiere made the "heartbreaking" decision to relinquish full custody of Kaya to Ukrainian boxing great Klitschko, due to her struggles with long-term post-partum depression and addiction.

In what proved to be her final interview with parenting outlet Momé, published just last month, the late actress addressed the situation again, saying she knew she needed to hand full custody to Klitschko in order to put her daughter first.

"It wasn’t a decision I made lightly, nor was it a decision I even wanted to make," said Panettiere. " I was going through a really challenging time in my life.

"I knew I needed to be able to put her first so that I could get the help I needed and be the mum she needed me to be.

"I love my daughter, and I’m so proud of the young woman she is becoming," she added. "I talk to her all the time, and I feel so connected to her. She’s like a mini-me."

It comes after she detailed being separated from Kaya in her memoir, titled This Is Me: A Reckoning and released earlier this year.

"Not being under the same roof with her every day has been the most gut-wrenching experience of my life, and it’s hard to describe the layers of emotion – including sadness, resentment, and anger – I’ve felt because of it," Panettiere wrote.

"I grieve that I’m not the mother I thought I’d be and definitely not the mother I want to be (trust me, no one should ever have to raise a child on FaceTime), and although I miss Kaya so much my heart aches, I know how blessed I am to be her mom.

"She is the greatest gift of my life, with all the best parts of her father and me."

Tragically, Panettiere's death comes three years after her younger brother Jansen also passed away at the age of just 28.

Jansen, who was also an actor, died in February 2023 due to aortic valve complications, related to enlarged heart syndrome.

Michigan basketball coach Dusty May is finalizing a deal to become the next head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, according to multiple reports.

The move comes weeks after the Mavericks mutually agreed to part ways with Jason Kidd following a 26-56 season. May, who led Michigan to the 2026 NCAA national championship, would make the jump from college to the NBA in what would be the first direct college-to-pro head coaching hire since 2019.

Mavericks Coaching Search Background

The Mavericks began their coaching search in May 2026 after parting ways with Kidd. In a statement at the time, Mavericks President Masai Ujiri said at the time that “Jason has had a meaningful impact on the Dallas Mavericks, both as a Hall of Fame player and as the head coach who helped lead this franchise back to the NBA Finals. … As we evaluate the future of our basketball program, we believe this is the right moment for a new direction for our team.”

The Dallas Express previously reported on the search, noting Ujiri’s emphasis on future-oriented decisions around rookie star Cooper Flagg. Candidates included assistants and college coaches, with exploratory talks involving May and others.

Dusty May’s Coaching History

May built his reputation at Florida Atlantic University before moving to Michigan. At FAU from 2018 to 2024, he compiled a 126-69 record, leading the Owls to the 2023 Final Four as a No. 9 seed — one of the most improbable runs in NCAA history. He was the program’s all-time wins leader.

Prior to FAU, May served as an assistant at Florida (2015-18), Louisiana Tech, and other programs after starting as a student manager at Indiana. He was hired by Michigan in 2024 to replace Juwan Howard and quickly restored the Wolverines to national prominence, winning the 2026 national title in his second season.

Reactions on X

Social media lit up with the news. One user posted that “After winning a National Championship at Michigan, Dusty May is leaving the Wolverines to coach Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks, per multiple reports.”

Another noting owner Patrick Dumont’s role, posted, “Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont convinced Rick Welts to come out of retirement, he convinced Masai Ujiri to run his basketball team and now Dusty May to coach his team. The ungodly amounts of money he’s spent…”

No official Mavericks statement confirming the hire had been released as of Monday morning, but reports from Adam Schefter, Shams Charania, and Pete Thamel indicated the deal was nearing completion.

First Game and Future Outlook

May’s first regular-season game with the Mavericks is expected in late October 2026, when the NBA season typically tips off. No exact date has been announced pending the official hire and schedule release.

The hire pairs May with Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick and 2025-26 Rookie of the Year, who averaged 21 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists. It marks a rebuild-focused move under Ujiri aimed at long-term contention. Michigan will now search for its next coach.

Brazil icon Neymar has been included in Carlo Ancelotti's final 26-man squad for the 2026 World Cup.

The Santos forward made the most recent of his 128 international appearances in a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in October 2023.

Neymar's struggles with injuries over the last few years cast doubt over his involvement in the upcoming World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA.

However, the 34-year-old has ultimately done enough with Santos to prove to Ancelotti that he is in good physical condition and can perform to the level required in the upcoming tournament. 

The Brazil boss confirmed Neymar's inclusion to a great reception in a ceremony in Rio de Janeiro on Monday. 

Neymar, who is Brazil's all-time leading scorer with 79 goals, is set to feature in a fourth World Cup after representing his country at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 tournaments.

Ancelotti leaves Chelsea star out of Brazil squad

While Neymar has achieved his World Cup dream, there was heartbreak for Chelsea forward Joao Pedro. 

The 24-year-old was a notable omission from the final 26-man squad, despite playing in Brazil's last two friendlies against France and Croatia. 

Pedro has staked a strong case with 23 goals and six assists in 52 competitive appearances this season. 

Rather than his club form, it seems that his failure to score in any of his eight international matches is a key factor in his omission.

NORTH KOREAN CLUB NAEGOHYANG WOMEN'S TEAM TO PLAY IN SOUTH KOREA ON MAY 20

North Korean club team Naegohyang is expected to play a football match in South Korea on May 20. This will be the first time since 2018 that North Korea has sent athletes to compete in South Korea.

Naegohyang's women's team will face South Korea's Suwon in the semifinals of the Asian Champions League.

The South Korean Football Association says Naegohyang has submitted a list of players and officials expected to travel to Suwon. However, North Korean state media has not reported on the upcoming trip.

During the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, athletes from the two countries marched together and competed as a joint hockey team. By the end of that year, North Korean players participated in a table tennis tournament in South Korea, but since then relations between the countries have become frosty again and sports exchanges have ceased.

McLaren Team Principal has been linked with a move to Ferrari

McLaren Formula 1 Team Principal Andrea Stella has responded to increasing speculation linking him with a sensational switch to Ferrari.

Stella is seen by many as the architect of McLaren’s success in recent years, rising through the ranks of the team since joining in 2015 from Ferrari as Head of Race Operations.

Promoted to Performance Director in 2018, and then Racing Director in 2019, he assumed the role of Team Principal in 2023, spearheading McLaren’s double constructors’ titles in 2024 and 2025.

But the Italian has been linked to Ferrari, given the sensational news that GianPiero Lambiase will join McLaren as Chief Racing Officer in 2028.

But Stella has firmly rejected these rumours, jokingly confirming the speculations “made me smile.”

“Honestly, some of the recent rumours, including those regarding astronomical salaries and mythical pre-contracts, have made me smile,” said Stella.

Stella had a somewhat unusual analogy to describe the whispers going in the paddock.

“It almost seems as though the ‘silly season’, which usually begins before summer, has arrived early!” he said.

” I’m quite used to this sort of thing by now and I take with a smile. 

“It almost looks like that some envious pastry chef has tried to spoil the preparation of a good dessert at the McLaren patisserie. 

“However, we do know very well how to distinguish the good ingredients from the poisoned biscuits….”

Stella’s firm denial is to be expected, but speculation will continue to grow until McLaren announces a firm contract renewal. Ferrari is also conspicuous in its silence.

WHEN KYRIE IRVING FINALLY STEPPED IN FOR KEHLANI DURING CHEATING RUMORS: "I HAVE TO SPEAK ON THIS BECAUSE I OWE IT TO YOU"

Back in 2018, Kyrie Irving decided he had seen enough of the bashing that his ex-girlfriend Kehlani had been receiving from the public. Even though he was no longer romantically in a relationship with the R&B singer, Irving still cared for Kehlani’s peace of mind.

The NBA superstar took to social media to shatter a long-standing narrative and defend Kehlani against trolls. Kyrie firmly denied the rumors claiming Kehlani cheated on him during their brief high-profile romance back in 2016.

The allegations stemmed from a controversial photo posted by Kehlani’s ex-boyfriend and rapper PARTYNEXTDOOR on social media in which he was in bed with her.

Irving already addressed the issue and stated that he and Kehlani wasn’t together when that picture came out.

“I have to speak on this simply because I owe it to you and you deserve the world to see you for you and how beautiful you are inside and out and not for the attachment to an emotional moment in time where we both had to grow up and learn about our hearts and our souls in a world that judges and adds on fictitious pressure,” Irving shared to Instagram alongside a photo of himself and Kehlani.

The constant bashing eventually affected Kehlani mentally. She even attempted suicide which made Irving even more concerned about her welfare. This gave the All-Star point guard all the more reasons to urge people to leave Kehlani alone.

“I do not want anymore negative energy towards her in any way. She did not cheat or intentionally hurt me, she actually did something extremely noble & respectful, but the fact that it’s still a lingering narrative is really outdated at this point.”

“When it starts affecting real-life progress, the shit has to stop,” he continued. 

Kyrie used his influence to save Kehlani

Irving and Kehlani were a couple for only roughly two months. Yet, a lot of people seemed not to be over with them, especially with Kehlani.

Even though he wasn’t on the receiving end of those hurtful things people had said, Irving took the initiative to use his platform to encourage his supporters and fellow men to respect Kehlani regardless of what they heard.

“I’m hearing about what people are doing to try and intentionally hurt her on my behalf is bullshit,” Kyrie continued. “The lack of understanding of what we went through has bred a lot of unwarranted things happening and I want my supporters to really let her be the great soul I know she is whole heartedly.”

“I am responsible as a leader to guide the young males who follow me in a positive way,” he pointed out.

Moved by his ex-boyfriend’s gesture, Kehlani responded to Irving’s message with genuine admiration.

“The dopest part about this was the acknowledgment of his responsibility of leading young men that love him & go hard for him, that he has a responsibility to put his foot down where he see fit,” she said at the time.

Kyrie and Kehlani have moved on

As it stands, both Kyrie and Kehlani have completely moved on from their past. More importantly, they seem to be happy with their respective present partners.

Kehlani is currently in a relationship with UK-based R&B artist KWN. They officially made their relationship public in October 2025, shortly after they collaborated on the song “Worst Behavior.”

On the other hand, Irving is already married to social media influencer and entrepreneur Marlene Wilkerson. They started to be linked to each other in 2018 and reportedly got engaged in 2019. They now have two children.

Kjetil Knutsen's team reached the last 16 of the biggest club competition on the planet with two wins over last year's beaten finalists -- a 5-2 aggregate victory giving them the greatest result in their history. "I think it's an amazing evening for the club, for the players, for the town and also for Norwegian football," said Knutsen, who has been in charge of Bodo/Glimt since 2018.

"We are not talking about goals, we are talking about how to perform and how we can take steps and develop the players and the team. Now I think that's extremely important. 

"We have our way to do it and that's really important."

Tuesday's triumph was their fourth straight win in the Champions League, with Manchester City and Atletico Madrid also falling in the final two league phase matches, which allowed Bodo/Glimt to snatch a spot in the knockout play-offs.

Bodo/Glimt were only promoted to Norway's top tier, a competition which had been dominated for three decades by Rosenborg of Trondheim, in 2017 but have since been crowned national champions in four of the last six seasons.

And since then, they have slowly risen up the domestic and European ranks, last season becoming the first Norwegian team to play in the semi-finals of a major European competition with their run to the last four of the Europa League.

Before this season, their best result was beating Lazio on penalties in the quarter-finals of the Europa League before being eliminated by Tottenham Hotspur.

But now, the team of no stars with a tiny budget have moved to a whole new level with one of either City or Sporting of Portugal awaiting next month.

Bodo/Glimt had previously been considered tricky opposition due to their artificial pitch and the frequently frigid conditions at their 8,200-capacity Aspmyra Stadium.

But they have now added strong away performances to their armoury, with a solid defensive display on Tuesday allowing Jens Petter Hauge and Hakon Evjen to dish out two sucker punches.

"I always look forward, so that's how we're thinking. For me, history is not so important," added Knutsen.

It was a rude awakening for three-time winners Inter, whose stature and budget dwarf that of the Norwegians and who are heavy favourites to win Serie A this season.

A pasting at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain might have coloured their last European campaign but Inter got to that final by seeing off Bayern Munich and Barcelona in epic knockout ties.

Inter had much the better in the first half but once Hauge capitalised on Manuel Akanji inexplicably giving the ball away on the edge of his area, there was no way back for the Italians.

"We know that the Champions League is very competitive, if a team reaches this stage of the competition that means that they are offering something," said Inter coach Cristian Chivu.

"They showed that in Dortmund, Madrid, against City and twice against us."

Defeat to Bodo/Glimt was also symbolic after Norway swatted Italy aside twice in World Cup qualifying.

Italy face the prospect of no team reaching the last 16 with Juventus and Atalanta trailing Galatasaray and Borussia Dortmund, the latest blow to the reputation of a grand old footballing nation which has since fallen on hard times.

USMAN KHAWAJA ANNOUNCES INTERNATIONAL CRICKET RETIREMENT AFTER FIFTH ASHES TEST - AUSTRALIA'S BATTING SUPERSTAR TO BOW OUT

Australian batter Usman Khawaja will retire from international cricket following the fifth Ashes Test against England in Sydney, which will be his 88th. Australia are 3-1 up in the series having already retained the Ashes, and Khawaja addressed the speculation around his future on Friday. Usman Khawaja has announced he will retire from international cricket after the fifth Ashes Test against England in Sydney.

The batter turned 39 last month, and will play his 88th and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground - which will be live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

"I’m here to announce today that I will be retiring from all international cricket after the SCG Test match," Khawaja told reporters at the ground.

"God through cricket has given me far more than I could have imagined. He’s given me memories I’ll carry forever, friendship that goes well beyond the game, and lessons that shaped me, who I am, off the field.

"But no career belongs to one person. I obviously had a lot of help. To my parents, thank you for your sacrifices that never made the highlights reel."

Khawaja has scored 6,206 runs at an average of 43.39 for Australia over the last 15 years, with 16 centuries.

It is fitting that Khawaja will bow out at the SCG, where he debuted for Australia in 2011 in the Ashes. His inclusion saw him become the first Muslim to play for Australia.

Australia have already retained the Ashes - they lead the series 3-1 - giving Khawaja the chance to bow out from his career in style.

"Funnily enough, I live just up the road from the SCG, on Cook Road, to be exact," he said.

"And I’ll never forget when I was younger, I saw Michael Slater drive in his red Ferrari. I couldn’t believe my luck. I just saw a Test cricketer.

"And as a boy, whose parents were barely scraping through in trying to provide for their kids in a little two-bedroom apartment, I thought, ‘One day, I’m going to be a Test cricketer and one day I can drive whatever I want.’"

He scored his first Ashes century in Sydney with 171 against England in 2018. The SCG was also the site of his career resurgence when, as a 35-year-old, he scored a pair of centuries against England in January 2022.

"This game humbles you," Khawaja added as he announced his retirement on Friday.

"It tests your patience, your resilience and your character. And if you’re lucky, it teaches you gratitude.

"Even on days that it doesn’t go your way, I hope I’ve inspired many children along the way, particularly those who feel that they are different, those who feel they don’t belong, or those [who] others tell that they will never make it.

"I felt all these things growing up, and trying to be an Australian cricketer, but seeing is believing.

"I’m a proud Muslim, coloured boy from Pakistan who was told that he would never play for the Australian cricket team. Look at me now. And you can do the same.

"As I walk off for the last time, I do so with gratitude and peace. Or as we say, ‘salam’. Grateful for the journey, the people, the lessons.

"Thank you for letting me live my dream and for sharing it with me."

Max Verstappen will take Daniel Ricciardo's old racing number three next season in the wake of being pipped to the Formula One world title by Lando Norris.

Red Bull's four-time world champion raced with the 33 until his first title in 2021, the number also appearing on a multitude of caps and shirts – and even some fan tattoos.

"My favourite number has always been three, apart from number one," the Dutch driver told Viaplay. "We can now swap, so it'll be number three."

He added: "Number 33 was always fine, but I just like one three better than two. I always said it represented double luck but I've already had my luck in Formula One."

Australian Ricciardo was Verstappen's Red Bull teammate from 2016-18 but has now retired. The governing FIA and driver have given permission for the number three to be used again.

Drivers previously had to stick with the same number through their careers and must not have raced for two consecutive seasons before it can be reassigned. Ricciardo last raced in Singapore in September last year.

Norris announced earlier this month that he would be swapping his number four for the champion's one next year.

Verstappen and Norris were involved in a thrilling battle for the F1 world championship this year.

The Dutch driver was attempting to win his fifth consecutive title but appeared to be out of contention midway through the season when Norris and his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, pulled clear in the standings.

However, Verstappen gradually reeled them in to set up a thrilling finale in Abu Dhabi.

Verstappen won the final race of the season, but needed Norris to finish fourth or lower to win the title.

The Brit held his nerve to finish third as he secured his maiden world title by just two points.

Coming back to the Al Nassr vs Al Khaleej match. Ronaldo’s goal was the last piece of major action in the match as Al Khaleej lost 4-1. Joao Felix opened the scoring for Al Nassr in the 39th minute before Wesley made it 2-0 in the 42nd minute. Murad Al-Hawsawi pulled one back for Al Khaleej in the 47th minute, but the Saihat-based club could not find any more goals.

Sadio Mane made it 3-1 for Al Nassr in the 77th minute, before Ronaldo pulled off the screamer in the dying minutes of the game. The goal came in the sixth minute of the last added time, a few minutes after Al Khaleej’s Dimitrios Kourbelis was given his marching orders.

It was a Nawaf Boushal cross from the right flank that led to Ronaldo’s goal. Alert as always, Ronaldo capitalised on the dipping cross to finish his 10th league goal of the season.

Al Nassr are currently at the top of the Saudi Pro League table with 27 points from nine matches, having won all matches so far.

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — The tiny Caribbean island country Curaçao will go to the 2026 World Cup as the smallest nation by population ever to qualify for the marquee event in men’s soccer. 

Curaçao, an autonomous territory of about 156,000 people within the Netherlands kingdom, takes the record of Iceland, with a population of just over 350,000, which was the previous smallest country to reach the World Cup when it qualified for Russia 2018. 

Tuesday to take a 0-0 draw in Jamaica and finish top of a four-team group. Its other opponents were Trinidad and Tobago and last-place Bermuda. 

Curaçao has actively recruited from its diaspora, getting permission from FIFA within world soccer’s rules to change the national-team eligibility of players who once represented the Netherlands at youth or Under-21 level, including five since August. 

Defender Joshua Brenet even played a World Cup qualifying game for the Netherlands in 2016. 

Tahith Chong, a former Manchester United youth player, is one of the few squad members born in Curaçao, which was called Netherlands Antilles until getting its autonomy 15 years ago. 

Dick Advocaat, at age 78, is set to lead his third team at a World Cup, and his second in the U.S. He took his native Netherlands to the quarterfinals at the 1994 edition and coached South Korea at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. 

Curaçao’s adventure is set to put players from unheralded clubs on the biggest stage. The squad that clinched qualification included players from Rotherham in England’s third-tier league, Bandırmaspor in the Turkish second division and Abha in Saudi Arabia. 

Curaçao got the historic result despite not having Advocaat on the bench. He missed the match in Jamaica because he had to return to the Netherlands last weekend for family reasons. 

His team saw Jamaica strike the woodwork three times in the second half in Kingston. A potentially decisive penalty kick awarded to the home team in stoppage time was overturned after a video review. 

Curaçao will be joined by regional neighbors Panama and Haiti, which also booked their World Cup spots Tuesday. 

Panama advanced to its second World Cup after defeating El Salvador 3-0 on first-half goals from César Blackman and Eric Davis, plus Jose Luis Rodriguez late in the game. 

Panama’s only previous World Cup appearance was in 2018. It overtook Suriname, another Dutch-influenced team, which started play atop the group before losing 3-1 against Guatemala. 

Haiti, a troubled Caribbean country, had a surprising campaign and beat Nicaragua 2-0 to win its group over favorites Honduras and Costa Rica, which was a quarterfinalist at the 2014 World Cup. 

Haiti’s only previous trip to the World Cup was in West Germany in 1974. 

The Caribbean and central American results Tuesday also finalized the six teams which will take part in the intercontinental playoffs in Mexico in March. 

Two teams will qualify from the playoffs, which includes Jamaica and Suriname, plus Iraq from Asia, Congo from Africa, Bolivia from South America and New Caledonia from Oceania.

LOS ANGELES - Freddie Freeman delivered a walk-off home run in the 18th inning to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 6-5 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays late on Monday in a game that tied for the longest in World Series history.

The 18 innings tied the mark set by the Dodgers and Boston Red Sox in 2018 and the game was the second longest in a World Series by duration, lasting almost six hours and 40 minutes.

The win gave hosts Los Angeles a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.

"It's one of the greatest World Series games of all time," manager Dave Roberts said. "I'm spent emotionally ... fortunately for the Dodgers we got Freddie Freeman on our team."

Freeman, who also delivered a walk-off grand slam in last year's World Series against the New York Yankees, homered off Brendon Little to send Dodger Stadium wild. 

The first baseman became the first player in Major League Baseball history with multiple career World Series walk-off home runs. He also joined an exclusive group of just four players to hit multiple walk-off homers in the postseason.

OHTANI DOES IT AGAIN

Shohei Ohtani added another chapter to his storied career, reaching base nine times, a postseason record, with two home runs, two doubles and five walks, four of them intentional.

"I get it. He's the best player on the planet," Roberts said.

The Japanese player, who is set to pitch in Tuesday's Game Four, tied Corey Seager's Dodgers record of eight home runs in a single postseason.

"What matters is that we won," Ohtani said. "I want to go sleep as soon as possible so I can get ready."

Rookie right-hander Will Klein, the Dodgers' 10th pitcher, threw four shutout innings to earn the win.

"I love the way we played," Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. "Every single player had the right intentions. There's a lot to digest, but I couldn't feel as good as I do right now about the way they went about it."

After almost seven hours of baseball, Roberts summed up the mood best.

"Guys will do anything to win a championship and they're laying it out there."

The zebras in the NFL are under serious fire. A bombshell study out of the University of Texas at El Paso just accused NFL refs of playing biased when it comes to making decisions on the Kansas City Chiefs. And the numbers don’t lie.

Researchers literally crunched over 13,000 penalty calls spanning nearly a decade to prove that Patrick Mahomes and his squad got the benefit of the doubt way more than anyone else.

The controversy exploded after Sunday’s Chiefs-Lions showdown. Kansas City had zero accepted penalties, while Detroit was flagged four times for 38 yards. The difference became obvious after the Chiefs had 13 penalties for 109 yards against Jacksonville the week before.

Fans immediately smelled something off. Social media erupted with accusations of rigged games and league manipulation. The timing seemed too perfect to be worse. That’s when the UTEP study dropped like a bomb.

The study read, “By analyzing more than 13,000 penalty calls from 2015 to 2023, researchers found that postseason officiating has disproportionately favored the Patrick Mahomes–era Kansas City Chiefs, coinciding with their rise as one of the NFL’s most marketable franchises…”

The study revealed penalties against opposing defenses in Chiefs playoff games were significantly more likely to produce first downs and cover more yardage. Subjective calls like roughing the passer and pass interference went Kansas City’s way far more often.

Here’s the kicker. These advantages didn’t exist for the Tom Brady-era New England Patriots or other recent Super Bowl contenders. This seems to only happen with the Chiefs, who became a big hit on TV.

The UTEP team drew parallels to financial markets and corporate governance. Dominant players often enjoy advantages not from explicit corruption, but because institutions adapt to preserve stability and revenue. The NFL playoffs represent the league’s most commercially valuable period.

Fans have been screaming about this for years. Now they’ve got data to back it up.

However, they don’t always get lucky. They were on the wrong end of false start calls against the Philadelphia Eagles in their Week 2 matchup. It’s not like the officials give Andy Reid’s squad the benefit of the doubt every single time.

Still, the pattern is quite crazy. Since Mahomes took over in 2018, the Chiefs have dominated. Seven straight AFC Championship appearances. Five Super Bowl trips. Three titles. Their winning streak happened at the same time they became really popular on TV.

George Russell celebrated his Formula 1 victory in Singapore with a tribute to his Mercedes predecessor Lewis Hamilton – and shared a story that goes back seven years. 

The Mercedes driver recreated Hamilton’s famous winner’s photo from the 2018 Singapore Grand Prix after triumphing at Marina Bay in 2025. 

Just like Hamilton back then, Russell sat cross-legged on the asphalt of the Marina Bay Circuit, placed the winner’s trophy beside him, rested his hands in his lap – and smiled for the camera. The only difference: Russell kept his race suit zipped up, while Hamilton posed in his fireproof underwear. 

But why? 

"In 2018 I was with Mercedes in Singapore and watched Lewis take an incredible pole position and then win the race," Russell explained in a post on social media.

"I remember how he took a really cool photo on the track afterwards – and I dreamed back then of one day being in Formula 1 myself." 

At the time, Russell was already on a clear path to the pinnacle of motorsport. As a Mercedes junior he was serving as a Formula 1 reserve driver, while competing in Formula 2 – where he was among the title favourites. At the Singapore weekend, he was seen as a leading contender in the feeder series, which he went on to win a few weeks later. 

His promotion to a Formula 1 race seat was already settled: one month after Singapore, Russell was confirmed as a full-time driver for British outfit Williams. 

A memorable venue for his fifth victory 

"Seven years later, it’s a very special moment for me to win here in Singapore and to celebrate this success together with my team," Russell wrote. 

It marked the fifth grand prix victory of his Formula 1 career, following Brazil 2022, Austria and the USA in 2024, and Canada 2025 – all achieved with the Mercedes works team, for which he has been racing full-time since 2022.

In response, Neves issued a statement criticising the work, saying:

“I always believe in the good in people, even if I’ve been advised not to. I’ve made mistakes, but I never wish anyone harm. The person who chose this photo for the magazine cover does not deserve to be pleased, because their choice was not a pleasant one. My wife, Debora Lourenco, and I have been together for over 11 years, and we are happy. We have a family that makes me proud, and we have never been in any kind of trouble.

“We have done our best to assist Rute and her family in the best way possible. This photo’s selection is as bad as the people who chose and uploaded it. I appreciate that everyone has their own work, that everyone strives to do their best, and that those who don’t respect others do not deserve respect.”

According to the statement, Neves is married to Debora Lourenco, with whom he began dating in 2014 and were engaged in 2018.

The couple has three children together—Margarida, Martim, and Mateo—and Lourenco has regularly shown her support for her husband on social media since his 2023 departure to Saudi Arabia.
