REIGNING CHAMPION IGA SWIATEK WITHDRAWALS FROM CHINA OPEN

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek has pulled out of the China Open for personal reasons, the five-time Grand Slam champion said Friday.

She won last year's China Open after beating Russian Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets in the final.

Swiatek, 23, withdrew from the Canadian Open and Korea Open, citing fatigue after winning the French Open title in June and a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics in August, before losing to American Jessica Pegula in the US Open quarterfinals.

"Due to personal matters, I'm forced to withdraw from the China Open in Beijing," Swiatek said in a statement. "I'm very sorry as I had an amazing time playing and winning this tournament last year and was really looking forward to being back there. I know that the fans will experience great tennis there and I'm sorry I won't be a part of it this time."

The WTA 1000 event will run from Sept. 25 to Oct. 6.

CARRO'S OUTSPOKEN AMBITION TAKES LEVERKUSEN TO NEW HEIGHTS

Xabi Alonso, left, and Fernando Carro are two of the three architects of Bayer Leverkusen's unprecedented success in 2023-24 Bayer Leverkusen

The Bayer Leverkusen players and coaching staff had rather important on-pitch matters to preoccupy them last week, but that didn't stop the Werkself bringing a visible and sparkling presence to New York City.

When you've won three different trophies -- the Bundesliga's Meisterschale, the DFB-Pokal and the DFL-Supercup -- in the space of just a few frenetic months, why not display them from the spectacular Manhattan skyline as part of a specially arranged trophy tour in a bid to attract new fans? Club owner Bayer's consumer health headquarters also happen to be located across the Hudson in New Jersey, so the trip ticked many boxes.

It was a busy week in the Big Apple for the face of the club throughout the trip. Fernando Carro has been Leverkusen's CEO since 2018, Barcelona born, but Germany based throughout his professional career.

A self-described sports fanatic, Carro was never a professional footballer but a regular attendee of matches in the standing section at the top of Camp Nou, and his mother taught Spanish to, among others, Austrian football great Hans Krankl and Bundesliga coaching legend Udo Lattek during their time with the Blaugrana.

Carro himself attended a German school in the Catalan capital and sat his Abitur (prestigious final exams) there. Little could he have imagined what that immersion in a foreign language would ultimately lead to.

"I wanted to be independent of my parents, and the studies I did, didn't exist in Spain," Carro told ESPN last week in New York. "I took engineering and economics, so I went to Germany and stayed for a long time, actually until today. I worked there for a long time with a media company, so Germany is my second home."

Having spoken to former and current employees of Bayer Leverkusen about Carro, each one of them has variously used the words "likeable," "pleasant" and "passionate." There is indeed a twinkle in his eye when he speaks, and he seems happy with a quote from his business past in which he said he loves people and numbers.

"I always say football is a people's business as we don't have any factory or production, but we have football players, people working for the club, so it's really the peoples' business and the connection there is important," he said. "At the same time, you must work with your resources."

When he started in the football industry six years ago, Carro concedes he didn't just follow the football decision-maker crowd with his public utterances about potential success.

"Bayer 04 was consistently on a good level but we were missing the trophies, so when I came to Leverkusen I realised the desire to win titles was important," he said. "I said I would prefer to win the DFB-Pokal than to be part of the Champions League.

"On numbers, you should wish to be in the Champions League, where you could earn €25 million to €30m. In the Pokal, you might only get €5m or €6m, but you have that trophy. I said we have the potential to strive for No. 1, not every year, but one year to beat Bayern Munich. I said this in my beginning interview and (then sporting CEO) Rudi Völler said, 'Don't say it too often, Fernando.'"

Carro has been reminded of his outspoken ambition by colleagues in the football world.

"They've told me, 'When you started six years ago, we didn't tell you, but we thought you were crazy,' because I was saying very openly in meetings with other clubs: I want to become champion."

Who's crazy now?

Leverkusen have been richly praised for their astonishing 2023-24 season, the first ever unbeaten domestic campaign by a Bundesliga club and just a point off the best points total recorded in a single campaign. Carro is already eagerly looking forward to the Ballon d'Or Club of the Year award, for which Leverkusen have been nominated, on Oct. 28.

"My impression is, it will be either Real Madrid or us, so if we win this, we will have the recognition," he said. "If Madrid wins, then we still feel rewarded, because our season was amazing: finalists in the Europa League, 90 points and unbeaten in the league and winning the Pokal. It's incredible."

It has been nearly two years since Carro went on the weekly Sport 1 TV panel show "Doppelpass" in front of a live studio audience, and with Leverkusen struggling under then-coach Gerardo Seoane, was asked about the possibility of a coaching change. Carro used the famous words "wir sind gut vorbereitet" ("we are well prepared").

No one outside Leverkusen at that time knew the preparation would lead to hiring of his compatriot Xabi Alonso, but Carro and highly respected sporting CEO Simon Rolfes had crossed paths with the urbane former midfielder in the months prior.

"When you say you are prepared, it can mean you need a coach in two years or one month, and Simon is always preparing a list of coaches, and we discuss it openly," Carro said. "Xabi will not stay here forever, and you have to be prepared, and this is something which is professional."

The rest is now German football history, but whereas most didn't necessarily believe a Bundesliga title was likely until the early part of 2024 with last-gasp victories at FC Augsburg and RB Leipzig and then the convincing 3-0 win over Bayern, Carro was convinced as early as Matchday 2.

"'If we play like this every game, no one can beat us,' I thought," Carro said of his reaction to the 3-0 triumph at Borussia Monchengladbach in August 2023.

Alonso rightly gets the credit for bringing a certain aura to the Rheinland, but Carro believes the fit also has to do with Rolfes.

"Simon and Xabi see football similarly, wanting to have control of the game. Both were midfielders who played the same position," Carro said. "What convinced me was Xabi's analytical skills, how he analysed a situation, what he thought was needed, what he learned from different coaches, so I had the impression he always wanted to learn. His ability to take his experiences as a player and put them into his role as a coach. He's intelligent, calm, ambitious."

Thanks to the 2023-24 Unbesiegbaren (Unbeatables), plans are afoot for Leverkusen to run similar trophy tours in Brazil and perhaps Mexico. Carro sees the club already well ahead of most other Bundesliga rivals in terms of international penetration.

"We have the third-best reach among Bundesliga clubs after Bayern and Borussia Dortmund," he said. "In Germany, instead of 25,000, we now have 60,000 members. Everywhere I go, it has gone to another level because of last season, and I hope we can maintain it."

Carro has missed only three Bayer 04 games in six years, and so flying back across the Atlantic after a whirlwind 48 hours to go straight to the Kraichgau region and witness Leverkusen's 4-1 win at TSG Hoffenheim was a priority. Meanwhile, the club arranged a special watch party around the game for Leverkusen fans old and new in a Brooklyn biergarten.

The Bundesliga will not be doing what LaLiga clubs are considering, in potentially taking league games to the U.S. It's simply incongruous in a culture where football is for local communities first and foremost, and everyone attached to the German game knows this.

But Carro did offer hope to Leverkusen and other Bundesliga fans Stateside that perhaps the DFL-Supercup, the annual curtain raiser, could someday be staged on American soil.

"For me personally, and I can't speak for anyone else, it would be possible to have the Supercup in the USA or another country," Carro said. "Many fans don't like it anyway with it being the same weekend as the first Pokal round, so we could do it differently. We have to have new ways of thinking, and this can be one example.''

Thinking differently has become one of Carro's hallmarks in German football, and so far, it's yielded unimaginable success.

ANTHONY JOSHUA-DANIEL DUBOIS: WHAT THE NUMBERS TELL US ABOUT THE FIGHT

Anthony Joshua, left, takes on IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois on Saturday at Wembley Stadium in London. Mark Robinson/Matchroom Boxing

Anthony Joshua is looking to become a three-time heavyweight world champion when he faces IBF titleholder Daniel Dubois on Saturday at London's Wembley Stadium (DAZN PPV, 11 a.m. ET).

Joshua (28-3, 25 KOs) has revived his career after back-to-back decision losses to Oleksandr Usyk in 2021 and 2022. Since then, he's 4-0 with three KOs, including a devastating second-round stoppage win over former UFC champion Francis Ngannou last March. In the 5:38 the fight lasted, Joshua was very effective, throwing just nine power punches, landing five and sending Ngannou to the canvas three times.

"On the route to the championship, you should always stay focused," said Joshua after the fight.

Now, he has an opportunity to regain a heavyweight title for the first time in more than three years against a younger version of himself in Dubois, who has also revived his career after a ninth-round TKO loss to Usyk in August 2023.

Dubois (21-2, 20 KOs) stopped Jarrell "Big Baby" Miller in 10 rounds back in December, then demolished perennial contender Filip Hrgovic in an eighth-round TKO win in June. Dubois started slowly in that fight but landed more than 42% of his power punches.

"I was rock bottom last year, but now I'm on top," Dubois said after the fight. "I've heard Anthony Joshua is next."

Now that Joshua-Dubois is here, let's look at the title fight by the numbers, with data from ESPN Stats & Information and CompuBox.

-425: Odds for Joshua to win the fight, per ESPN BET.

12: Joshua's number of title fights.

14: Combined number of rounds fought by Joshua in his last three fights since going 24 rounds against Oleksandr Usyk (two defeats).

4: English fighters to hold the IBF heavyweight world title (Dubois, Joshua, Lennox Lewis, Tyson Fury).

0: Previous times Joshua has faced a fellow English fighter in a world title bout.

5: Heavyweights that have enjoyed three reigns as champion (Muhammad Ali, Evander Holyfield, Michael Moorer, Lennox Lewis, Vitali Klitschko). Joshua would join the list with a win over Dubois.

5: English fighters that have won at least 10 world title fights (Chris Eubank, Naseem Hamed, Lennox Lewis, Johnny Nelson, Nigel Benn). Joshua has nine wins in his 12 world title fights

58%: Percentage of power punches landed by Dubois in the 10th and final round to KO Jarrell "Big Baby" Miller. Dubois landed 48% of his power punches overall.

11.7: Punches landed by Joshua per round out of 37.7 thrown in his last 17 fights, below the division's average of 14.3.

25.2%: Percentage of body punches landed by Joshua in his last 17 fights. Dubois lands 22.5%. Both land at a rate lower than the heavyweight average of 29.5%.

22.4%: Percentage of punches landed on Joshua by his last 17 opponents.

7.5: Punches landed on Joshua per round by his past 17 opponents. They connected with only 4.6 power shots, fourth lowest among champions and title contenders.

15: Consecutive victories by Dubois to start his professional career before losing to Joe Joyce in November 2020.

3: Previous Joshua fights inside Wembley Stadium (3-0, 3 KO).

1,000: Lowest attendance for a heavyweight world title fight (Joshua vs. Kubrat Pulev at London's Wembley Arena on Dec. 12, 2020) -- a Guinness world record -- due to COVID-19 restrictions.

90,000: Attendance at Wembley Stadium for Joshua's 11th-round TKO victory over Wladimir Klitschko on April 29, 2017. A crowd of 96,000 is expected for Saturday's fight between Joshua and Dubois, which would set a new post-war record for a crowd at a boxing event in the United Kingdom.

30.2%: Percentage of power punches landed on Dubois by his last five opponents. Usyk landed only 23.5% of his power shots in his fight with Dubois. In comparison, Usyk landed 43% of his power punches in two fights against Joshua.

6: Previous times two English boxers have competed against one another for a heavyweight title.

89%: Joshua's KO rate (25 knockouts in 28 wins).

95%: Dubois' KO rate (20 knockouts in 21 wins).

763: Number of days between title fights for Joshua. His last title fight was on Aug. 20, 2022, against Oleksandr Usyk.

3,087: Days since Joshua won his first heavyweight world title, in a second-round KO of Charles Martin on April 9, 2016.

In their own words -- from Thursday's news conference in London

Joshua on facing Dubois: "We'll find out [what Dubois has to offer]. ...I can't say. I'm not Daniel. All I can do is focus on myself.

"I'm tough and so is he."

Joshua on how he can win the fight: "I could win in a variety of ways. I'm not depending on punch power. It takes a lot more than that to be a great fighter. I've got the fighting spirit and that's how I'll break him down, with my spirit."

Dubois on why he wanted to face Joshua: "It's a resurrection story of my career. I want the big challenges, to make a name for myself and to make history.

"I need to retain this world title. It's a great thing to have but I need to legitimize myself by winning this fight."

Dubois on sparring with Joshua in the past: "It was sparring. Now we're fighting, this is different. ...Move on.

"I'm ready to go and ready to fight. ...I'm not predicting anything."

SHOHEI OHTANI FIRST 50/50 PLAYER IN MAJOR LEAGUE HISTORY

MIAMI -- Shohei Ohtani became the first player in baseball history to reach the 50/50 club on Thursday, and he did so in dominant fashion -- with three home runs and two stolen bases in a six-hit game that led the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 20-4, postseason-clinching victory.

"It was something I wanted to get over as quickly as possible. And, you know, it's something that I'm going to cherish for a very long time," Ohtani said through an interpreter.

Ohtani opened the game with a line-drive double off the wall in right-center field against Miami Marlins starter Edward Cabrera, then picked up his 50th steal of the season by swiping third base. A second-inning single was followed by stolen base No. 51. Ohtani then added a two-run double in the third -- before getting thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple -- and followed with a 438-foot home run into LoanDepot Park's second deck in the sixth for his 49th home run.

Ohtani came to bat again with runners on second and third and two outs in the seventh inning, prompting many to wonder whether the Marlins would pitch to him. They did -- and Ohtani delivered, taking a 1-2 curveball from Mike Baumann and lofting it over the fence in left-center field for his 50th home run of the season.

Ohtani roared as he made his way up the first-base line, then stepped out of the dugout for a curtain call after celebrating with teammates. He then giggled as he made his way back into the first-base dugout the next half-inning -- after clobbering a 440-foot home run off Marlins infielder Vidal Brujan.

"To be honest, I'm the one probably most surprised," Ohtani said. "I have no idea where this came from, but I'm glad that it was going well today."

Ohtani's three homers, six hits and 10 RBIs all set career highs. The 10 RBIs set a Dodgers record. He became the first player with three home runs and two stolen bases in a game since at least 1900 and the first player since RBIs became official in 1920 with 10 RBIs and five extra-base hits in a game. Ohtani also became the second player since at least 1901 with six hits in a game, including five for extra bases, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

The man who secured a 40/40 season with a walk-off grand slam on Aug. 23 had found another way to reach history in grand fashion.

The Dodgers' convincing victory secured them another playoff spot. For Ohtani, it will be his first. The two-way star has played in 866 games without reaching the postseason, the most among active players.

Soon -- officially -- that will come to an end.

"Obviously I changed teams this year and my goal has always been to make it to the playoffs," Ohtani said. "It's something that I've really worked hard [for] and I'm really happy to make it, so now my goal is to be able to perform well in the playoff situations."

PSG BOSS LUIS ENRIQUE ON KYLIAN MBAPPÉ EXIT: THE TEAM

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique is relishing the chance to lead a team that no longer has a global star following the departures of Neymar, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé in recent years.

Speaking after his PSG's 1-0 win against Girona in their Champions League opener on Wednesday, Luis Enrique was asked about his players adapting to not having a star player in the team and he told TNT Sports Brasil: "Yes, there's a star, a star that shines more brightly than anything else, that is the team. That is the star, the team.

"It's amazing. It is a feeling that I try to instil in my players. You see it on the pitch, one for all and all for one, like the Three Musketeers. That is marvellous in a team sport."

Throughout last season, Luis Enrique often expressed his frustration at being constantly asked by journalists during news conferences about Mbappé.

Mbappé, 25, left PSG this summer after his contract expired having had his best-ever season at the club, netting 44 times in 48 games. The France captain joined Real Madrid as a free agent one year after PSG had lost Messi and Neymar.

Argentina captain Messi joined Inter Miami in July 2023 after two years in Paris while shortly after, Neymar signed for Saudi Pro League giants Al Hilal after six seasons at PSG.

PSG, who are seeking their fourth straight league title, have had a perfect start to the campaign. They have won all their games and scored 13 goals in their opening four league matches.

NEW AIR JORDAN RECALLS

Jordan Brand looks to be paying homage to Michael Jordan’s brief stint playing Minor League Baseball with a new colorway of his twelfth signature basketball sneaker.

The upcoming “Black/Wolf Gray” Air Jordan 12 Retro has been given an unofficial nickname of “Barons” referencing the Birmingham Barons. Using the shoe’s classic “Flu Game”-style color blocking, the sneaker features black tumbled leather across its ribbed upper, which is inspired by the Japanese Rising Sun Flag. The mudguard and outsole are colored in gray, with the mudguard featuring its signature faux-reptile texture. Metallic silver upper eyelets and a white-based carbon fiber midfoot shank complete the look.

While not officially tied to the Birmingham team, it’s plausible that Jordan’s black-and-gray Barons uniform was on the moodboard for this colorway’s design sessions.

It’s also far from the first time Jordan Brand has alluded to the Birmingham team. In 2014, it released an on-the-nose “Barons” Air Jordan 9 — the same model Jordan wore in cleat form while playing baseball — complete with uniform-inspired pinstripes on the shoe’s liner.

The unofficial theme has also appeared on a “Baseball Glove” Air Jordan 9 as well as versions of the Air Jordan 1, Air Jordan 1 Low, Air Jordan 11 Low and Air Jordan 13.

Jordan spent just over a year with the Double-A Chicago White Sox-affiliated minor league team, debuting in April of 1994 and last playing in March of 1995. Although his professional baseball career was brief, the period is fondly remembered by many for being an obscure moment in sports history. On March 18 of ’95, Jordan officially announced his return to the NBA, much to the delight of his fans.

In related news, a first look just surfaced of the “Blueberry” Air Jordan 12 Retro, which is expected to be released in December.

Readers won’t have to wait long for a chance to buy this pair. The Air Jordan 12 Retro “Barons” will be released Saturday, Sept. 28 for a retail price of $200 from SNKRS and select Jordan Brand stockists. In addition to adult sizing, the style comes in big kids ($150), little kids ($90) and toddler ($75) sizes.

TEOFIMO LOPEZ FINALLY REVEALS WHAT STARTED TERENCE CRAWFORD RINGSIDE SCUFFLE: "FIGHT ME NOW"

Teofimo Lopez and Terence Crawford came face-to-face this past weekend after a back and forth through the media.

Crawford is fresh off a world title win in his fourth division, super-welterweight, and is chasing down a fight with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez that would require jumping up twice more to 168 pounds.

Lopez has urged the pound-for-pound star to stay at 154, saying he will leave the 140 ranks where he is currently world champion for that fight.

The pair were both in attendance for a portion of the Canelo-Edgar Berlanga fight card in Las Vegas and crossed paths. Speaking to Broadway Joel, Lopez revealed all on the coming together.

“Long story short, I was going to ringside and I thought someone was staring at me. It was Crawford. He looked at me, I looked at him. He’s trying to stare me down, I stare at him and said listen, when we gonna fight? He’s acting like he can’t hear me, pulls to the side then we just talk, talk, talk. He goes to my father, he says, ‘don’t you ever touch me again, next time you touch me I’mma slap you.’ My father goes and responds, ‘then slap me now.’ I said, ‘when we gonna fight?’ We had a little scuffle.

My whole thing is I want to fight the best. If he’s the best, let’s make the fight happen. He goes over there, trying to poke my face, smack his hand down. He wanted to fight me there. You scared I’m gonna beat you in front of the whole world? Is that why? We’ll see what they do next.”

Crawford and his team have previously ruled out a fight with the 27-year-old, with coach Brian ‘BoMac’ Mcintyre said the match-up is absolutely ‘not competitive’ and that the only rewarding part would be seeing his man knock Lopez out.

Whether or not this drama changes that remains to be seen

CANELO ALVAREZ'S GUADALAJARA MANSION

FIGH HIGHLIGHTS | CANCELO ALVAREZ VS. EDGAR BERLANGA

CANELO GIVES HONEST VERDICT ON EDGAR BERLANGA'S POWER AS FANS SHOCKED AT POST FIGHT BRUISING

Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez secured another comfortable victory at the weekend, this time against Edgar Berlanga.

The unified super-middleweight champion looked set for an early night when he knocked the previously unbeaten Berlanga down in the third round with a perfectly timed left hook. The 27-year-old punched his gloves together in anger and got up to survive the round.

From that moment fans were expecting four-weight world champion Alvarez to add to his knockout tally, but the challenger survived to hear the final bell after 12.

Canelo, although visibly bruised after the fight, was never troubled by what Berlanga was able to land and ended up cruising to a wide unanimous decision.

In a video from the post-fight press conference uploaded to FightHub fans were quick to comment on the markings left by Berlanga’s shots on Canelo: “Wow. Never seen Canelo’s face so marked after a fight”, “You’d think he’d been in a war by the look of his face”, “Canelo face was swelling up after the first”.

However, Canelo was asked to rate Berlanga’s power and he compared it to that of his son.

“I say to him in the tenth or ninth round, ‘you hit like my son’. He thinks he hits hard, but he hits like my son. But I’m super strong so that’s why maybe.”

As for Berlanga, he believes Canelo is ‘for sure’ the hardest hitter he has ever shared the ring with.

“I’ll say he hits the hardest for sure.

I already told myself ‘I know I’m going to get hit, I know I’m going to get hit on my chin’, but I’ve got to bit down on my mouthpiece and push.

It comes with boxing, the greats got dropped got hurt, but it’s about how you come back.”

Canelo is expected to return to the ring next May for his usual fight date on Cinco de Mayo weekend. Who will be in the opposite corner remains to be seen.

PEP GUARDIOLA VS. MIKEL ARTETA

ARSENAL'S MARTIN ØDEGAARD OUT 'FOR A WHILE'

Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard will be out "for a while" after suffering a significant ankle injury while playing for Norway last week, manager Mikel Arteta said on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old hobbled off during his country's Nations League defeat of Austria in Oslo on Sept. 9 and returned to London on crutches.

Ødegaard missed Sunday's North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur and Arteta provided an update ahead of Arsenal's opening Champions League game against Atalanta in Bergamo on Thursday.

"The scans showed that he's got some damage especially on one of the ligaments in the ankle," said the Spaniard.

"It's something quite significant so we're going to lose him for a while."

Arteta, whose side are second in the league and two points behind Manchester City, said he hoped it would not be months "but let's see."

Ødegaard has become a key player for Arsenal, missing only a handful of games over the last three seasons, and a lengthy absence will come as a huge blow.

"He's our captain. He's been one of the biggest and best players in our team," continued Arteta.

"Our identity is very linked to how he plays and behaves. It's a big test for the team to see how able we are to show a different face."

Norway coach Stale Solbakken told VG newspaper he had been fully updated about the injury and was "preparing for a life without Martin."

"We have to take it week by week and day by day. Some types of damage go faster and some go slower," he said.

CRISTIANO RONALDO 'DOESN'T CONTROL' CONTROL AL NASSR INSISTS CLUB CEO

Al Nassr CEO Guido Fienga has said Cristiano Ronaldo "doesn't control the club" but stressed the important role the Portugal captain plays in the team.

The comments come following suggestions that Ronaldo holds a lot of influence at the club regarding on and off-field decisions.

On Wednesday, Al Nassr sacked Portuguese coach Luis Castro after just one win in three league games and replaced him with Italian manager Stefano Pioli.

At a club event on Wednesday, Fienga said: "Cristiano Ronaldo is our captain and he is the strongest player in the world not just technically but how he behaves.

"Cristiano Ronaldo doesn't control the club but obviously, being the No. 1 in the world, he gives the direction of where we have to go and which are the targets we have to reach. He is a winner and we ask him to teach us how to win."

Ronaldo, 39, has won just one title, the Arab Club Champions Cup, since joining Al Nassr in December 2022 from Manchester United.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has scored 62 goals for Al Nassr and his thirst for success at the club was evidenced by his tears after their King's Cup final loss to Al Hilal in May saw them end the season trophyless.

"He is a winner and we ask him to teach us how to win," Fienga said of the former Real Madrid star.

"We want to win with him this year and reach the best target that we can. Cristiano is part of the team and we are very happy to have him in our team."

Ronaldo missed Al Nassr's 1-1 draw with Al Shorta in the revamped Asian Champions League on Monday with illness, in what turned out to be Castro's last game in charge.

"Step by step we will improve," Fienga said

"This summer don't forget we invested almost $100 million in new players. I believe we did a good job in order to reinforce the club with some good players that we needed ... we need to work and give stability to the club to work and to produce the value and not destroy the value every six months."

LIONEL MESSI COMES OFF BENCH IN INTER MIAMI DRAW AT ATLANTA

Lionel Messi was limited to a second-half appearance as a substitute as Inter Miami drew 2-2 at Atlanta United on Wednesday night.

With the Herons playing their second of three games within a week, Messi began the match on the bench. Coach Gerardo Martino had said he didn't want to overwork his star player, who is coming back from an injury with the club in the midst of a busy stretch.

To the delight of many of the 67,795 fans in attendance at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Messi came onto the field to join the action in the 61st minute, replacing Julian Gressel.

Just two minutes earlier, Miami had retaken the lead through Leonardo Campana's deflected strike shortly after Atlanta's Saba Lobjanidze had canceled out David Ruiz's opener for the visitors from South Florida.

Messi had a shot saved with a chance to extend his side's lead but a spectacular late equalizer from Atlanta's Russia international Aleksei Miranchuk meant Miami's run of five-straight MLS victories came to an end.

"Messi always looks good, and tonight was no exception," Miami assistant coach Javier Morales said after the game.

"He played almost 30 minutes, where he looked active. He had chances at goal, so like always his performance was positive for the team."

Martino made several changes to his lineup for the midweek game in Atlanta, with Luis Suárez and Jordi Alba joining Messi in starting from the bench before coming on in the second half.

"We have three games this week and various players suspended so for this game Tata Martino and the coaching staff thought this was the perfect team to face Atlanta. I thought it was a good decision, since we almost took home the three points," Morales added.

Miami remains with the best record in Major League Soccer and is trying to lock up the Supporters' Shield and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

The 37-year-old Messi made a mesmerizing return to Miami's lineup this past Saturday after a lengthy absence, scoring two goals and assisting on the third in a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union.

He didn't play a year ago when Inter Miami visited Atlanta, disappointing a crowd of 71,635.

The Argentine star and eight-time Ballon d'Or winner had not played with Inter Miami since June 1 because of national team commitments and a right ankle injury sustained in a 1-0 victory over Colombia in the Copa America final on July 14.

Messi has 14 goals and 14 assists in league play, despite playing just 14 matches.

Inter Miami next visits New York City FC on Saturday.

ITALY LEGEND SALVATORE SCHILLACI DIES AT AGE 59

Former Italy forward Salvatore "Toto" Schillaci has died aged 59, the Palermo hospital where he was being treated for colon cancer said a statement on Wednesday.

Schillaci rose to international fame at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he starred for the Azzurri, scoring six goals to win the golden boot.

Italy went on to finish third in the tournament, but Schillaci's personal efforts were rewarded, beating Lothar Matthäus and Diego Maradona to win the golden ball as the tournament's best player.

"A football icon is leaving us, a man who has entered the hearts of Italians and sports fans around the world," Italy's prime minister Giorgia Meloni posted on X.

"Salvatore Schillaci, known by everyone as Toto, the striker from the magic nights of Italia '90 with our national team. Thanks for the emotions you gave us, for having made us dream, celebrate, embrace, and wave our national flag. Bon voyage, champion."

He would go on to score just one more goal for the national side, against Norway the following year.

Born in Palermo, Schillaci also enjoyed success at club level for a number of Italian clubs, most notably with Juventus and Inter Milan.

"Palermo FC, with President Dario Mirri and the entire City Football Group family, express their deepest condolences for the premature passing of Salvatore Schillaci and join in the grief of Francesco Di Mariano's family," Palermo said in a statement.

He won a UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia with Juve before adding another UEFA Cup title with Inter.

Schillaci finished his career in Japan, winning a J-League title with Jubilo Iwata in 1997.

In 2022, Schillaci was diagnosed with colon cancer. He was admitted to Palermo Civico hospital in early September.

"He made an entire nation dream during the Magic Nights of Italia '90," Inter said.

"FC Internazionale Milano gathers around the Schillaci family for the passing of Totò."

DECLAN RICE RED CARD: ARSENAL - BRIGHTON AUDIO SHOWS REF ANGST

Premier League referee Chris Kavanagh conceded he "didn't like" showing Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice a red card for kicking the ball away during the draw against Brighton last month, but had no choice.

The audio of the incident was released on Tuesday in the first episode of the Premier League's "Match Officials Mic'd Up" in which former referee Howard Webb joined former England striker Michael Owen to discuss five on-field decisions.

In it, Kavanagh is heard talking to his assistants via his microphone, saying "I don't like it, but he's knocked the ball."

Rice, who had already been booked, tapped the ball away from Joël Veltman to delay the taking of a free-kick. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta afterwards said he was "amazed" that the England midfielder had been shown a second yellow card.

Kavanagh was clearly uncomfortable with the decision he had to make, but said he was put in a difficult situation.

"Second yellow, for me. I had no choice, he knocks the ball away. As [Veltman's] about to kick it, he knocks the ball," he is heard to say. "I have no choice. He's put me in an awful position. Dec, you need to go I'm afraid."

The Premier League hope the show will help fans understand the processes involved in decision-making by on-field and VAR officials, following intense criticism last season.

Webb, who is the chief operating officer of referees' body the PGMOL, agreed that Kavanagh was correct to send off Rice.

"We've messaged very clearly and strongly to the players in pre-season around the importance of not getting involved with the ball once the whistle is gone, not delaying the restart in that way," Webb said.

"Once he's seen Declan Rice deliberately, clearly kick that ball away from the position of that free-kick, then I don't think he's got any choice."

Arteta was also annoyed that Brighton forward Joao Pedro had escaped a yellow card for delaying the restart in the first half, and Webb conceded he should have been booked.

"Of course, he [Pedro] should have been cautioned here," Webb admitted. "The officials on the field gave him too much benefit of doubt, feeling that the actions weren't really impactful because they felt that the Arsenal players were not ready to take that throw-in."

Among the other incidents discussed was a penalty that was awarded to Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin against Brighton by referee Simon Hooper but overturned after VAR invited the referee to review the incident.

Footage showed Calvert-Lewin had actually trodden on the foot of a Brighton defender Lewis Dunk, not the other way round.

"Sometimes the referee's call will be clearly and obviously wrong and in this case it was," Webb said.

"So that's a good example of a situation where the referee's call was wrong and it needed intervention by the VAR."

Webb did admit that VAR Tim Robinson was wrong to disallowed Dango Ouattara's stoppage time winner for AFC Bournemouth against Newcastle United for handball.

"In this situation, the ball strikes Ouattara's shoulder, upper-arm area." Webb explained. "It's hard to be totally conclusive as to exactly where. I don't think that's conclusive enough to intervene."

OLEKSANDR USYK DETAINED IM POLAND; ZELENSKY AIDS IN RELEASE

Heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk was detained Tuesday at Krakow Airport in Poland and subsequently released after Ukraine's Foreign Ministry intervened, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on social media.

A source told ESPN that Usyk, a native of Ukraine, was detained after he attempted to board a flight to Valencia, Spain, where he is set to begin preparations for his Dec. 21 heavyweight championship rematch with Tyson Fury in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Usyk and his trainer, Sergey Lapin, were denied boarding after an airline official determined they were not fit to travel, a source said.

According to a source, Usyk explained that they were fine to fly and were simply exhausted from a nearly 14-hour travel day from Kyiv, the capital of war-torn Ukraine, that included a 557-mile drive. Between the language barrier and Usyk being adamant that they were not impaired in any way, he was detained.

Usyk's wife, Katheryna, was traveling with Usyk and Lapin. She posted a video on social media that showed Usyk being led away in handcuffs on the jet bridge. She said the matter was "nothing criminal."

"A misunderstanding took place," Usyk wrote on social media. "It was quickly resolved. Thanks to all who got concerned. Thanks to Ukrainian diplomats for the efficient support. And respect to Polish Police for conducting their obligations with no regards to height, weight, reach and regalia."

Zelensky wrote on social media that he spoke with Usyk after he was detained. His post included a photo of Usyk alongside a Ukrainian official.

"I was disappointed by this attitude towards our citizen and champion," Zelensky wrote in his post. "I instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, and the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Ihor Klymenko, to immediately look into all the details of the incident at Krakow airport.

"Now, everything is fine, our champion has been released, and he is no longer being detained."

Usyk, 37, is ESPN's No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer. The Olympic gold medalist defeated Fury in May via decision to become boxing's first undisputed heavyweight champion since 2002. Usyk is expected to be ringside in London on Saturday for Anthony Joshua's title fight against Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium. Usyk defeated Joshua to become unified champion in 2021 and again in the rematch one year later.

REAL MADRID BEAT STUTTGART LATE ON RUEIGER, ENDRICK GOALS

Endrick, right, celebrates with Real Madrid teammate Kylian Mbappe after scoring a goal in the Champions League

Real Madrid started their Champions League title defence with a hard-fought 3-1 home win over Stuttgart on Tuesday thanks to late goals by Antonio Rueiger and Endrick, which cancelled out Deniz Undav's equaliser.

Stuttgart were arguably the superior side at a sold-out Santiago Bernabeu stadium, with Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois making a string of critical saves to deny efforts by the German side.

However, Madrid got the lead in the first minute of the second half in a quick counter-attack when Rodrygo crossed for Kylian Mbappe to strike from close range.

Stuttgart found the equaliser with Undav's header in the 68th minute, but Madrid substitute Luka Modric lifted a corner to meet Rudiger in the six-yard box and he nodded a header past the goalkeeper in the 83rd.

Eighteen-year-old Endrick slotted home a powerful shot from long range deep into added time to secure an edgy win for the local side.

"Those who watch Stuttgart closely know that they are an attacking side which scores a lot of goals but can be caught off guard; I'm glad that we managed to go out with a win," player-of-the-match Courtois told Movistar Plus. "They pressed hard against us in the beginning and we suffered, sometimes by our own mistakes, but we got better and should have scored on many occasions.

"I'm content with the way we responded after the equaliser because winning is very important in this new format of the Champions League."

Manager Carlo Ancelotti, faced with a selection puzzle in defence with David Alaba still recovering from an ACL tear sustained last season and Éder Militão struggling with a lingering leg muscle problem, started full-back Dani Carvajal as a centre-back and Stuttgart went aggressively after the right side of Madrid's defence, almost scoring on several occasions.

Carvajal and stand-in fullback Lucas Vázquez, both 1.73 metres tall, were easy targets for Stuttgart and were often caught out of position, giving the German side chances throughout the first half.

An inspired Courtois produced world-class saves from efforts by Jamie Leweling, Enzo Millot and Angelo Stiller within the first 20 minutes.

Real tried to hit back, with Mbappe, Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo all wasting good chances, but it was Stuttgart who came close to scoring through Undav in a counter-attack in the 29th minute when his strike was deflected on to the crossbar by Carvajal.

Ancelotti brought Militao off the bench at half-time, moving Carvajal to his original fullback position in a bid to fix his side's issues, and a defensive mistake by Stuttgart's Maximilian Mittelstädt gave Real the opener in the first minute of the second half.

Aurélien Tchouaméni sent a long ball towards Rodrygo on the right touchline that Mittelstadt failed to clear, leaving the Brazilian forward unmarked and able to control the ball in his stride before crossing to Mbappe who tapped into the empty net from the far post.

Real Madrid kept piling on the pressure, with Rodrygo missing a couple of chances and Vinicius Jr hitting the crossbar from the edge of the box in the 59th minute.

Stuttgart were still dangerous on the break and Courtois had to make a couple of saves from efforts by Leweling before Undav's header from a corner levelled the match.

Stuttgart kept threatening a chaotic Madrid defence, but the Spanish side got the lead again through Rudiger.

Vinicius Jr missed a sitter one-on-one against Stuttgart goalkeeper Alexander Nuebel in the 93rd minute, two minutes before Endrick's rocket strike from way outside the box.

DOLPHINS PLACE QB TUA TAGAVAILOA ON IR AFTER CONCUSSION

MIAMI -- The Miami Dolphins placed Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve Tuesday after the quarterback suffered another concussion in Thursday's loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Per NFL rules, Tagovailoa must remain on injured reserve for at least four games. There is no timetable for how long Miami plans to keep him on IR as he focuses on his health before his return to the field.

It is the third diagnosed concussion of Tagovailoa's NFL career.

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel on Monday said Tagovailoa wouldn't be placed on IR until more information became available, but the decision was made Tuesday after further evaluation.

Miami signed quarterback Tyler Huntley from the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad. Per NFL rules, the Dolphins must allocate a spot on their 53-man roster to Huntley for at least their next three games.

"We got to learn firsthand a nice reminder of how it only takes one play and what you think your depth is changes abruptly," McDaniel said. "So that's a move for moving forward to secure some depth in case of the unforeseen, which is timelines for us as it relates to Tua."

Third-year quarterback Skylar Thompson will start Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks now that Tagovailoa has officially been ruled out.

Thompson did not play during the 2023 season, but he started three games as a rookie in 2022, including a playoff loss on the road to the Bills. McDaniel said the move to add Huntley "was not any direct reflection on Skylar" and was made to bolster the team's depth.

Huntley has started 10 games in his four-year career, mostly for the Ravens. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2022 after helping guide them to the playoffs in place of Lamar Jackson. He started Baltimore's playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

"I do think that it helps the dynamics of the [quarterbacks] room to add another guy with starting history to this team," McDaniel said of Huntley. "He's a guy that's a signal-caller that a team can get behind. ... I think this is more directly to back up Skylar, and then you always let competition play out when it's out on the field. But this is a depth move, for sure."

Tagovailoa suffered the injury while scrambling up the middle for a first down and making forcible contact with his helmet to the forearm of Bills safety Damar Hamlin. Tagovailoa immediately went into a fencing response with his arms in an unnatural position.

Medical trainers attended to Tagovailoa for several minutes as players kneeled around him. He was ultimately able to walk off the field and into the locker room under his own power but was quickly ruled out for the rest of the game.

The next four games will push Tagovailoa's career total of games missed due to injury to 14 since 2020. He played all 18 of the Dolphins' regular-season and playoff games in 2023.

Also Tuesday, the Dolphins announced the signing of offensive lineman Jackson Carman to the practice squad and the release of wide receiver Robbie Chosen.

HARRY KANE PASSES WAYNE ROONEY AS RECORDS FALL IN BAYERN MÜNCHEN ROUT

Harry Kane celebrates after scoring a goal for Bayern Munich against Dinamo Zagreb. Getty Images

MUNICH -- Harry Kane scored four times on Tuesday to bring his Champions League goal total to 33, blowing past the previous record of 30 set by Wayne Rooney for the most goals by an English player in the competition.

It was all part of a record night for the striker and Bayern Munich, as they cruised to a 9-2 rout of Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb in the first round of games in the new-look Champions League format.

The nine goals for Bayern were also the most ever in a Champions League game by a single team, and Kane had another European record to his credit with three of his goals coming from the penalty spot.

"Amazing game, a bit of a crazy game for sure," Kane told broadcaster DAZN. "To score all those goals in the end was a great night.

"To be honest, after the second [penalty] I didn't really know what to do with the third one, but thankfully I was able to put it away."

Kane opened the scoring from the penalty spot to give Bayern the lead and equal Rooney's mark for an Englishman. He scored his 31st on a rebound to pass Rooney and added two more from the penalty spot to take his Champions League tally to 12 goals since moving to Bayern a year ago.

"He is motivated and for me as a coach it is easier because if you have a top player who is himself so motivated it makes things so much easier," said Bayern manager Vincent Kompany after the match. "He is a leader, captain of the national team. Players like him, they know they have to rise at these moments and that is what he is doing."

Raphael Guerreiro, Michael Olise, Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka piled on the goals for Bayern to hit the record haul of nine in a single Champions League game, while Bruno Petkovic and Takuya Ogiwara each scored to get the visitors on the scoresheet.

Kane now has 53 goals in 50 games in all competitions since moving to Bayern and has scored nine goals in his past three games for club and country, including two for England against Finland in his 100th international game and a hat trick Saturday for Bayern against Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga.

Another record was broken when Thomas Müller came off the bench to play his 152nd Champions League game for Bayern. That's the most for a player for one club, breaking a tie with former Barcelona player Xavi Hernandez.

Despite the lopsided win, it was not all praise from Kompany, who saw his team lead 3-0 at half-time but concede two goals in two minutes shortly after the restart as the Croats tried to find a way back.

"We scored nine but we conceded two goals. We conceded those goals because we were a step too late. Still we stayed calmed and then had a good evening," said the Belgian.

LIVERPOOL'S SET PIECES STREER SLOT & CO. TO WIN IN MILAN

MILAN, Italy -- Liverpool cruised to a 3-1 Champions League win against AC Milan in their opening game of the new expanded competition, but Arne Slot's team had to fight back from conceding a third-minute Christian Pulisic stunner to seal victory in San Siro.

With seven-time European champions Milan facing six-time winners Liverpool, it was the perfect glamour clash for UEFA to launch their new-look league phase of the competition. Although Pulisic's goal gave Liverpool an early scare and offered Milan hope of a surprise win, the reality turned out to be different with Liverpool making easy work of the home side.

Mohamed Salah struck the crossbar twice before defenders Ibrahima Konaté and Virgil van Dijk both scored headers from set pieces to give Liverpool a 2-1 half-time lead. A Dominik Szoboszlai goal on 67 minutes made the game safe for Liverpool, but their win was never in doubt after they had cancelled out Pulisic's opener. -- Mark Ogden

Liverpool's set piece threat evident under Slot

It is still early days for Slot at Liverpool, but his team's first two goals against Milan showed a subtle change in approach under the former Feyenoord coach from his predecessor, Jurgen Klopp.

Klopp's Liverpool were all about the goals of his attacking players and midfielders rather than relying too heavily on the training ground work of converting set pieces. But goalscoring headers from Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk in the first-half highlighted Slot's readiness to take advantage of the physical attributes of his defenders, who are both well over 6 feet tall.

First, Konate powerfully headed Trent Alexander-Arnold's free kick past flailing keeper Mike Maignan from inside the six-yard box, before Van Dijk did the same from a Kostas Tsimikas corner. Both goals were simple and direct, further proof of Slot's work with this team.

It also bears noting that as impressive as Liverpool were in their execution, Milan were abject when it came to defending. Centre-halves Fikayo Tomori and Strahinja Pavlovic were far too passive in dealing with both deliveries, and Konate and Van Dijk will not have easier chances all season. Their aerial threat is without question and Liverpool will score more goals from set pieces by exploiting these strengths this season. -- Ogden

"Captain America" starts brightly before Milan fade

Christian Pulisic's night could not have gotten off to a better start. A lay-off from Álvaro Morata, a no-show of defense from Tsimikas and there he was, scything down the right flank and smacking a diagonal finish past Alisson, avoiding the recovery challenge of a desperate Alexis Mac Allister.

However, things went downhill from there, partly because Milan failed to get him the ball, and partly because, with Liverpool on the front foot, Pulisic found himself spending a lot of time tracking back to help Davide Calabria cope with Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota on the left side of Liverpool's attack.

Pulisic's third-minute goal had things neatly poised for a fairytale Milan night at the San Siro, except Liverpool's rally rendered it a frustrating footnote. Giuseppe Cottini/AC Milan via Getty Images

Pulisic's chemistry with Morata is also something that coach Paulo Fonseca will want to work on. Opening goal aside, the U.S. and Spain internationals failed to connect, especially when Morata dropped deep from his central striker position. Off the ball, he was his usual industrious self, but more menace toward Alisson's goal would have been welcomed. -- Gab Marcotti

Alexander-Arnold, Leão show their good and bad sides

The head-to-head encounter between AC Milan forward Rafael Leão and Liverpool defender Alexander-Arnold perfectly summed up the strengths and weaknesses of two of the most talented but infuriating players in the game.

Leão's performance was more straightforward in that he produced only glimpses of his best for Paulo Fonseca's team. The Portugual international has pace and trickery -- enough to beat any defender on his day -- but there was no final product against Liverpool. On one first-half occasion, Leão ran 40 yards with the ball to excite the crowd, but rather than spot the unmarked runners either side of him, he ran into trouble and lost possession. It summed up his night until a rare flash of his talent when he hit the post in the 96th minute.

Alexander-Arnold had more good contributions than bad, but there is no question that he remains a problem defensively. On more than one occasion, centre-half Konate had to urge his teammate to get back into position after he had wandered into midfield or stayed forward after an attacking move. Had Leão been more aware of his surroundings, he would have targeted the gaps left by Alexander-Arnold and hurt Liverpool, but it didn't happen.

The England star also wasted possession too often, but he did create Liverpool's opening goal for Konate with his famed set piece delivery from a free kick.

It is the same as ever with Alexander-Arnold. He's great at what he's good at, but his weaknesses can be bad and ugly for Liverpool. -- Ogden

Maignan injury could hurt Milan in the long term

The sight of "Magic" Mike Maignan pounding the turf in frustration after picking up an injury in a collision with Fikayo Tomori early in the second half was rough for Milanisti to take, maybe even more than the defeat.

The French goalkeeper, who on three occasions had asked for treatment in the first half, was in visible pain as he exited the pitch. At best, he's a doubt for the Milan derby this weekend; at worst, we're talking a longer stay on the sidelines.

It's worth noting that he had been nursing an issue with his calf in recent days, but assured the team he was ready to play. Had Sportiello, who injured himself in preseason and is likely out until January, been fit, he may well have started. As it turned out, Maignan's fitness probably didn't help on either of Liverpool's set piece goals.

Maignan was in need of medical attention several times in the first half before finally being replaced early in the second. How long he's out could determine Milan's fortunes this season. Fabrizio Carabelli/PA Images via Getty Images

To make matters worse, his back-up, former Atalanta keeper Marco Sportiello, is currently injured, which explains why Fonseca had to turn to 19-year-old Lorenzo Torriani -- who had never before played a single minute of first-team football -- to replace Maignan. In fact, Torriani was only the third-choice keeper last year ... for Milan's under-21 side.

Talk about being thrown in at the deep end.

There wasn't much Torriani could do for the Szoboszlai goal, and he certainly looked confident on the pitch. He wasn't afraid to play out from the back like Maignan likes to do and, on one occasion, he raced out of his penalty box to boot away a long ball over the top. All in all, it wasn't a bad debut, but probably best for Milan if they don't need to see him again for a while. -- Marcotti

Why the subdued crowd?

On Saturday, 71,273 supporters -- a near sell-out -- filled San Siro to watch Milan take on newly-promoted Venezia in a Serie A match as the hosts romped to a 4-0 win. Four days later, just 59,826 showed up for the visit of six-time European champion Liverpool in the Rossoneri's opening game of the revamped UEFA Champions League.

How do you explain the missing 11,000-plus fans? It's obviously not the prestige of the occasion or the opponent; instead, a clue might be in the prices charged.

The cheapest available tickets cost €74 ($82) with the least expensive in the lower tier going for €124 ($138). By contrast, Liverpool's most expensive regular adult seats clock in at £61 ($80). This led to pushback from fans on social media and, predictably, several swathes of empty seats on Tuesday night.

The Champions League is obviously a cash cow for clubs in terms of gate receipts, but obviously, you have to ensure you get those backsides into the seats. -- Marcotti

Milan too meek for Zlatan's liking

They waited, as they usually do, until deep in injury time and then let them have it.

Milan's players lined up in front of the Curva Sud, ostensibly to thank the club's black-clad hardcore Ultras fans for their support, but really to let them vent. And vent they did, singing "Let's see some b---s!" and "We're sick of this!"

Obviously, no fan is going to be happy with a 3-1 home defeat on the opening day of the new Champions League, but the manner spoke to a more complex issue engulfing the club: the idea that coach Paulo Fonseca is too much of a nice guy, that some players are soft and that there's a need for a hard man -- a "football man" -- to bring discipline.

That man, of course, is Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is on the board of RedBird, the club's owners. Nobody doubts that he's a tough guy and a winner and his arrival in the summer was hailed as a coup. Finally, a former player upstairs who could command everyone's respect and be a conduit between dressing room, coach, front office and ownership.

Ibrahimovic had been away ("personal reasons," he said) prior to this match and before kickoff, he went straight into Zlatan mode. Referring to his absence, he said: "When the lion goes away, the cats come out. When the the lion returns, the cats disappear." He then added: "What's my role? It's simple. Plenty of people talk, but I'm in charge. I am the boss and everybody works for me."

If that's the case, he's got his work cut out for him, because Milan have won just one of their first five games this season in all competitions. Time will tell whether he's the butt-kicking boss who gets everyone onside or whether he's more like that old "Saturday Night Live" skit. -- Marcotti
