BRITISH WORLD NO. 733 DENIED £99K WIMBLEDON PRIZE MONEY AFTER STUNNING FIRST-ROUND WIN

Oliver Tarvet beat Leandro Riedi at Wimbledon on Monday(Image: Clive Brunskill/Getty Images)

Oliver Tarvet saw off Leandro Riedi, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 19 minutes on the opening day of Wimbledon, but the 21-year-old Brit won't be able to accept the prize money

Oliver Tarvet said it was a “dream come true” to win his first ever match at Wimbledon, but his victory came with an unusual caveat.

The 21-year-old Brit, who is ranked No.733 in the world, saw off his opponent, Leandro Riedi, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 19 minutes on the opening day of Wimbledon.

He had to come through three rounds of qualifying to earn his place at the All England Lawn Tennis Club and had never before played an ATP Tour-level event.

But he drew a decent crowd in the sweltering heat on court four and rose to the occasion, knocking out his Swiss opponent, who is ranked 506th in the world but was 117th as recently as August last year and is a previous runner-up at Surbiton.

Tarvet could now get an even more high-profile tie, with his win possibly granting him a second-round match against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, who is facing veteran Fabio Fognini on Centre Court on Monday afternoon.

“There’s a lot of emotions,” Tarvet said. “I’m just really overjoyed to be in this situation. All the hard work I’ve put in over the last few years has clearly paid off. I was just taking it match by match to see what I could do.

“This is my first tour level event – to come through qualifying and then win a first round at Wimbledon and maybe have the chance to play Carlos on Wednesday is truly incredible. It’s a dream come true for me to play at Wimbledon and it’s really special.”

Tarvet can’t enjoy the financial rewards that come with his success, however. The youngster is a University of San Diego student and has developed his game in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) system. That comes with strings attached. Under NCAA rules, players are restricted in how much they can claim from professional tournaments.

Tarvet revealed before the tournament that he is only allowed to take home $10,000 (£7,290) in profit every year, as well as any expenses incurred during the events. That means he will likely have to forfeit the £99,000 in prize money he has earned for reaching the second round.

"There's been complaints about it but I don't want to speak too much about it, I don't want to overstep anything,” he said before the match. "In my opinion, I've worked hard to get this money and I don't really feel like it's undeserved, the money that I've got. So I think it would be good to see a change in the rules."

Tarvet is the first male British qualifier for Wimbledon since Alexander Ward in 2017. He beat Terence Atmane in round one before prevailing 6-3 6-2 against Canada's Alexis Galarneau and defeating 29th seed Alexander Blockx of Belgium 6-3 3-6 6-2 6-1 to progress to the main draw.

OUSMANE DEMBÉLÉ GETS HIS HANDS ON LIONEL MESSI'S ENTIRE INTER MIAMI KIT AFTER CLUB WORLD CUP CLASH AS PSG STAR SENDS EMOTIONAL MESSAGE TO EX-BARCELONA TEAM-MATE

Ousmane Dembele did not stop at a shirt swap with Lionel Messi, as the Paris Saint-Germain star walked away with the Inter Miami icon's entire kit.

WHAT HAPPENED?

France international Dembele was once a team-mate of fellow World Cup winner Messi at Barcelona. They spent four years together in Catalonia, prior to the Argentine icon making his own move to PSG in 2021.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

They have now been reunited at the Club World Cup. Champions League winners PSG faced MLS Cup hopefuls Inter Miami at the last-16 stage of that competition, and the European heavyweights from the French capital ran out 4-0 winners in Atlanta.

Instagram

DID YOU KNOW?

Messi swapped shirts with former team-mate Achraf Hakimi at the final whistle, but also handed a jersey, his shorts and boots to Dembele after linking up with another familiar face behind the scenes.

WHAT DEMBELE SAID

Messi was all smiles despite suffering a one-sided defeat to PSG, with Dembele saying in a social media message to the South American GOAT: “Good to see you again @leomessi, the greatest of all time. I hope you continue to make history with the @intermiamicf like in this World Club.”

WHAT NEXT FOR MESSI?

Messi, who is no stranger to shirt swaps, will be turning his attention back to MLS action as Dembele - who is considered to be a leading contender for the 2025 Ballon d’Or - prepares to face Harry Kane and Bayern Munich in the Club World Cup quarter-finals.

SOUTH KOREA'S IM AND LEE WIN PGA LPGA PAIRS EVENT IN PLAYOFF

South Koreans Im Jin-hee and Lee So-mi celebrate on the way to a playoff victory in the LPGA Dow Championship pairs event (David Berding)

South Koreans Im Jin-hee and Lee So-mi birdied the first playoff hole to beat Lexi Thompson and Megan Khang in the LPGA Dow Championship pairs event in Michigan on Sunday.

Lee rolled in the winning birdie putt, she and Im both able to celebrate a first LPGA title after Khang was unable to get the US duo's birdie putt to drop.

"We made it together," Im said. "If I had to do it alone I couldn't make it.

"I think we're the best team ever," she added. "Hopefully we're coming back next year."

Khang and Thompson -- an 11-time LPGA winner who is playing a limited schedule this year -- climbed to the top of the leaderboard at Midland Golf Club with a 10-under-par 60, combining for 10 birdies in a best-ball format to build a four-round total of 20-under 260.

Thompson's seven-foot birdie putt at the 72nd hole gave the Americans a one-shot clubhouse lead.

But Lee drilled a birdie putt at the 17th that pulled the South Koreans level and after a birdie attempt by Im at 18 burned the edge they signed for an eight-under 62 and headed back to 18 for the playoff, which reverted to the alternate-shot format in which the first and third rounds were played.

Thompson's tee shot gave the Americans the best look at birdie, but Im drilled her putt to put the pressure on Khang who missed from short range.

"I think on the first tee we pretty much said as long as we give ourselves two chances each hole we will see where it takes us," Khang said.

"Thankfully made some putts here and there -- bummer to miss the last one in the playoff to force another hole, but very happy how we played."

American Lindy Duncan and China's Miranda Wang combined for 11 birdies in an 11-under 59 to climb 13 places into a tie for third on 18-under 262.

They were joined by Belgium's Manon De Roey and France's Pauline Roussin-Bouchard, who had seven birdies and a bogey in their 64.

Overnight leaders Sarah Schmelzel and Albane Valenzuela endured a frustrating day. They had four birdies in the first 11 holes but couldn't find another, their four-under 66 leaving them alone in fifth on 263.

ALDRICH POTGIETER BIRDIES FIFTH PLAYOFF PLAYOFF HOLE FOR FIRST PGA TOUR WIN AT ROCKET CLASSIC

The energy of youth topped the experience of age.

Aldrich Potgieter, a 20-year-old South African, birdied the fifth playoff hole to defeat Max Greyserman and Chris Kirk to win the 2025 Rocket Classic on Sunday in Detroit.

Potgieter poured in an 18-foot birdie putt at the par-3 15th hole at Detroit Golf Club.

“I finally got one to the hole, saw it roll end over end, and knew it was going into the hole,” he said.

Potgieter shot 3-under 69 at Detroit Golf Club for a 72-hole total of 22-under 268.

Greyserman, 30, shot a bogey-free 6-under 66. The Duke grad, who ranked second in SG: Putting for the week, led the field with most putts of more than 10 feet but couldn’t convert from 12 feet to win in regulation and had multiple chances in the playoff but his putter went cold.

Aldrich Potgieter plays his shot from the fourth tee during the final round of the 2025 Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club.

Kirk, the grizzled vet at 40 and with six previous Tour titles, shot 5-under 67 on Sunday but missed from 16 feet at 18 in regulation and 9 feet on the first playoff hole for the win. He took three putts on the second playoff hole and made bogey and was eliminated from the playoff.

Potgieter turned professional in 2023 and became the youngest winner in Korn Ferry Tour history by winning the 2024 Bahamas Great Abaco Classic at age 19. At 20 years, 9 months, 16 days on Sunday, he became the seventh-youngest PGA Tour winner since the start of 1983, and the youngest player from South Africa ever to win on the PGA Tour.

LEWIS HAMILTON'S UNHEARD FINAL AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX RADIO MESSAGE SUGGESTS HE'S STILL UNHAPPY AT FERRARI FOR ONE REASON

Ferrari were the best of the race behind McLaren at the Austrian Grand Prix.

Charles Leclerc secured his fourth podium finish of the season and was followed home by Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Hamilton has now broken his personal record for the longest streak of Grand Prix results without a podium finish.

He hasn’t stood on the rostrum since last year’s Las Vegas Grand Prix, but there were plenty of reasons for the seven-time drivers’ champion to be happy.

Hamilton recorded his best qualifying result of the season, excluding Sprint events, to start on the second row alongside Oscar Piastri.

Kimi Antonelli’s collision with Max Verstappen was incredibly close to taking him out, but after coming out on top in a duel with ex-teammate George Russell, Hamilton could concentrate on running his own race.

He was left in no man’s land for much of the Austrian Grand Prix, and at one point, he wasn’t happy with Ferrari’s decision to bring him into the pits for the final stop.

Apart from that, Hamilton praised his team’s work throughout the weekend, doing absent team principal Fred Vasseur proud.

However, he couldn’t help but air one last frustration when speaking to race engineer Riccardo Adami after the race.

Lewis Hamilton admits he needs to ‘figure’ out his lack of pace at the Austrian Grand Prix

Ferrari rushed an update to the Austrian Grand Prix in the hopes of improving the car’s floor.

Hamilton admitted after the race that he thought it was only a minor update, but it seemed to give Ferrari the boost they needed to jump ahead of Red Bull and Mercedes in the pecking order.

Leclerc and Hamilton comfortably drove away from Russell during the race, and we’ll never know what pace Verstappen had with both his qualifying and Grand Prix efforts scuppered for reasons beyond his control.

“I’m really proud of you, let’s keep pushing. I didn’t really have the pace today; I need to figure that out. Thanks anyway.”

Adami: “The pace was there, I think. Many things to manage, but we’ll go through everything together and we’ll push.”

Charles Leclerc and George Russell agree on Lewis Hamilton’s first six months at Ferrari

After 11 Grand Prix weekends, Hamilton has 91 points and sits sixth in the drivers’ championship.

Leclerc has increased his lead over his new teammate to 28 points in Austria, but is still waiting to secure his first victory of the season.

Hamilton can at least claim to have broken that duck when he came home in P1 during the Sprint Race in China, but a visit to the podium has to be his next aim, and the upcoming British Grand Prix would be the perfect time to end that wait.

Russell and Leclerc agree on Hamilton’s start to life at Ferrari, believing that he’s the greatest driver in the history of the sport.

'HAPOY TO BE ALIVE' - MCLAREN DRIVER SUFFER INJURY AFTER HE KILLED DEER IN 17OMPH CRASH AT AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX

Formula 1 in the 1980s was terrifyingly dangerous - but getting killed by an animal would have taken things to a whole new level.

Thankfully for McLaren’s Stefan Johansson, he avoided that fate, but only by a couple of feet.

Johansson was a huge character in F1, but almost met his maker in the form of a dee

His car and the deer were destroyed in an Austrian cloisonCredit: Reddit

The Swede was staging his best season in F1 in 1987 against some of the very best to ever do it - Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell to name just three.

Yet his biggest adversary turned out to be a deer in the Austrian hills.

With teammate and title leader Nelson Piquet coming off two straight wins, Johansson needed to get back in the groove at the Spielberg track, but faced an almighty early setback.

During Friday practice, a deer ran out on him and the amount of damage was staggering.

Johansson’s McLaren’s front end was ripped off, and he was lucky to come away with just a broken rib.

Speaking later with his car strewn to bits in the pitlane, he explained: “I came over the brow and didn’t even see it until it was like three metres away from me and I hit it head on.

“It wiped the whole front of the car off, and then I went on and off the road and destroyed the car completely.”

The commentator said he was happy to be alive - unlike the deer - and Johansson confirmed as much when he later reflected on the incident.

“It was very small, thank God,” he said. “Even so, another couple of feet to the left...

“I had no time to react. None. The signal from my brain to brake didn’t even reach my foot it happened that quickly. I was doing 170mph over a brow and the deer’s just sat in the middle of the road.

“It tore off the left-front suspension – there were four gaping holes where the pick-up points had been – and that corner carried back and sliced off the sidepod and rear suspension. The whole left side was pretty much gone.

“It was morning and the grass was moist. In those conditions you accelerate when you leave the track.

"But there was quite a long run-off and so I had plenty of time to think about it. I prefer accidents when you spin and – boof! – you’re in the wall.”

Giving a brief thought to the other party, he added: “Apparently it had been walking around for a while. So it was a mystery why the session hadn’t been stopped.”

Deer are nothing new at the now called Red Bull Ring, but what happened after certainly was.

Johansson got straight back out in McLaren’s third car explaining: “Being strapped in the car was almost like being in a cast and that helped a bit, too.”

However, two more crashes followed on Friday retiring ten more cars, and Johansson was one of them, much to the fury of team boss Ron Dennis.

Yet his team managed to source some spare parts and get him back out the next day where he was even fastest at one point in the wet during qualifying.

Sunday saw a botched start and then a mechanic fail to tighten up his wheel, sending Johansson to the back of the grid, and as he put it: “The whole weekend was a disaster.”

Yet he would go on to stage one of his best F1 drives, climbing up to seventh with the fastest lap despite having a broken rib and car.

Even with a very impressive 12 podiums and 88 career points to his name, his Austria heroics showed a driver who certainly wasn’t out of place on a grid full of Hall of Fame talents.

Yet in the ‘80s such a feat was nothing new, as the Swede finished: “That’s just what you do: get back in it and get back on it. If you start thinking about it, doubting, it’s probably time to stop.”

'IT'S A JOKE': CHELSEA BOSS ENZO MARESCA RAGES AT TWO-HOUR WEATHER DELAY AT CLUB WORLD CUP

Chelsea required almost five hours to beat Benfica after a storm warming in North Carolina

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca called the two-hour weather delay that disrupted his team’s Club World Cup win over Benfica as a “joke” and “not football”.

The Blues eventually defeated Benfica 4-1 in extra-time to reach the quarter-finals but the match took four hours and 39 minutes to complete after a storm warming in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Chelsea were leading 1-0 when players were asked to leave the pitch. Both teams were taken back inside and were pictured riding exercise bikes and kicking balls in the dressing room during the interruption.

It was the sixth time at the Club World Cup that a game had been stopped because of a storm or lightning warning and Maresca went as far to suggest the United States was not a suitable host.

Games at the inaugural 32-team tournament are being played across the US, which co-hosts the men’s World Cup next year, and other stoppages have taken place in Orlando, Cincinnati and New Jersey.

Getty

"For me personally, it's not football," Maresca told a press conference at around 2am local time in Charlotte. "I think it's a joke. It's not football.

"I can understand that for security reasons, you have to suspend the game. But if you suspend seven or eight games, that means that probably this is not the right place to do this competition.

"It's a fantastic competition. It's the Club World Cup, all the best clubs are here," he added.

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca celebrates after full time (Getty Images)

"But six, seven games suspended? It's not normal. In a World Cup how many have they suspended? Probably zero. In a European (championship), how many games? Zero. There is some problem."

Maresca’s side had appeared set for the last eight after Reece James’s free kick had given them a second-half lead in Charlotte, only for the game to be halted four minutes from time due to lightning in the area.

A long pause disrupted their rhythm and allowed Benfica to equalise from the penalty spot late on, Angel Di Maria cool and calm from 12 yards after Malo Gusto had handled.

But Benfica were rocked moments into extra time by the sending off of Gianluca Prestianni for a second bookable offence, and Chelsea eventually romped home, goals from Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall adding gloss to the result as the Portuguese side wilted late on. Chelsea will face Palmeiras, who earlier edged fellow Brazilian club Botafogo, in the last eight in Philadelphia on Friday.

"The game was very good for 85 minutes, then we stopped for two hours, and when we started it was a completely different game. It's not the same game because you break the tempo," Maresca said.

JAKE PAUL VS. JULIO CESAR CHAVES JR PUNCH STATS

Jake Paul took on experienced boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in his 13th professional fight in Anaheim, California on Saturday night, and it's safe to say The Problem Child was barely tested in the 10-round contest, which went the distance and saw the judges score unanimously in Paul's favour.

The YouTuber-turned-boxer took on former middleweight champion Chavez Jr in front of a raucous crowd that broke the gate record for boxing events at the Anaheim Center. Paul’s last ring outing was a massive money fight with Mike Tyson, while the ex-champion defeated former UFC star Uriah Hall last summer.

The crowd in attendance were not impressed with the fight, however, and ended up booing Paul out of the building afterwards.

Jake Paul vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr Fails to Impress

Fans were not happy with the little action in the 10 rounds

After very little action to speak of for five-and-a-half rounds, the fight sprung to life at the end of the sixth with both men landing big shots on their rivals. The seventh and eighth were much of a muchness, before a fiery finish to the ninth.

The aftermath of Paul's victory had him calling out everyone from unified cruiserweight world champion Gilberto 'Zurdo' Ramirez, who was victorious in the co-main event, to WBC cruiserweight titleholder Badou Jack, Gervonta Davis, Anthony Joshua, and Tommy Fury.

Paul seemed indifferent to the crowd's reaction, claiming afterwards: "All the boos are words, but actions speak louder than words. It was flawless. I think I only got hit 10 times. He's been in with [Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez] and all those guys, and I embarrassed him like that. Easy work.

"I'm him. I'm really him. I just beat your boy's a**. I want tougher fighters. I want to be world champion. [WBO and WBA champ Gilberto Ramirez] looked slow as shit tonight. [WBC champion] Badou Jack. Tommy [Fury], you stop running."

Paul vs Chavez Jr Punch Stats

Compubox have released the numbers & they aren't pretty reading

Paul (12-1, 7 KOs) controlled large portions of the fight with his jab against a listless Chavez Jr, who spent the early rounds following the influencer-turned-boxer around the ring without letting his hands go. Paul landed 140 of 482 punches (29%), with the majority of the offence coming from his jab, with 65 of 302 (21.5%) landing throughout the 10-round fight.

Chavez Jr, meanwhile, landed more than the 10 punches that Paul had claimed, but the effort was still abysmal for a former middleweight champion. The 39-year-old landed only 61 of 154 punches (39.6%) with nine punches landed in the first five rounds.

While the idea of Paul fighting for a world title will baffle many, he is expected to be ranked by the WBA after his win over Chavez Jr, with some rumours saying the WBC will rank him as well, clearing one of the hurdles for someone to cash in on his polarising popularity with a title fight.

"The WBC ratings committee has been following Jake Paul's career," WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman told ESPN before the fight. "If he defeats Chavez Jr, and depending on how the fight plays out, the committee will make the decision. It's very likely [Paul will be ranked] if he wins convincingly."

JAKE PAUL HANDLES JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ JR. WITH RELATIVE EASE, SETS SIGHTS ON TITLE SHOT

ANAHEIM, California — Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. didn’t even show up until the fourth round against Jake Paul on Saturday at Honda Center. And even after he showed signs of life, he didn’t do much more than throw a few punches here and there, although he came on strong in the last few rounds.

Meanwhile, Paul did his job. He fought behind his jab, outworked Chavez by a mile and took everything his foe had to offer.

It wasn’t an easy fight for Paul in the end, but it was a clear victory and another step in what he hopes will lead him toward a world title shot. All three judges scored it for Paul: 99-91, 98-92 and 97-93.

It appeared in the first three rounds that Chavez’s handlers had forgotten to tell him he had a fight.

The 39-year-old, one-time middleweight titleholder, who is coming off a stint in rehab and has had a multitude of discipline issues, fought as if he were in survival mode for the first nine minutes. He did next to nothing.

And Paul (12-1, 7 KOs) took full advantage, setting up power shots with his jab, avoiding the few punches that Chavez threw and generally controlling everything that was happening in the ring.

The great Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., near his son’s corner, was so frustrated that he violently waved Junior toward his opponent and shook his head in disgust. He knew a good opportunity — a chance to set up more big fights — was slipping away.

Then, in Round 4, Chavez Jr. (54-7-1, 34 KOs) seemed to wake up. He began to stand his ground and throw punches, a number of them hard and some accurate.

He got Paul’s attention. The YouTuber-turned-boxer continued to outwork Chavez, but he had to be acutely aware of the dangers he suddenly faced. And he met the challenge with aplomb, at least until late in the fight.

Paul used his feet to try to keep his distance when Chavez went into attack mode. And when the Mexican got close, he often clinched. That prevented Chavez from causing serious damage.

Chavez’s best rounds were 9 and 10, when he threw punches with relative abandon and seemed to stun a tiring Paul on several occasions. He even raised his arms in triumph after Round 9, as if to say, “Yeah, I still have some fight in me.”

However, it was a classic too-little-too-late fate for Chavez, who couldn’t climb out of his early hole.

“He’s a tough, tough guy,” Paul said of Chavez. “He’s never been stopped, he’s a Mexican warrior. I respect Mexican warriors, I respect Mexico. I’m also a warrior. And I won tonight.”

Chavez, who admitted that he started too slowly, gave Paul credit afterward … to a point.

“He’s strong, a good boxer,” Chavez said in English. “The first four rounds … after that, I feel him getting tired. So I don’t think he’s ready for the champions, but he’s a good boxer.”

Paul was asked for his reaction to that comment.

“If I listened to anyone in life,” he said, “I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Paul is dead set on facing world champions one day, including future Hall of Famer Canelo Alvarez.

“I thought I did great,” he said, “going 10 rounds with a former world champion who has never been stopped and was in there with Canelo Alvarez and all these guys. And I embarrassed him. Easy work.

“I want to be world champion. [Titleholder] Zurdo [Ramirez] looked slow tonight. That’s easy work, too. Badou Jack, Anthony Joshua. And Tommy [Fury, the only man to have beaten him] stop running.”

Who might be next?

“We’ll see,” Paul said. “We’ll go to the drawing board. There’s a long line of people waiting. Take a [expletive] ticket. I don’t care. I have time. I’m 28 years old. I’ll fight anyone, any time, any place.”

BOXING RESULTS: DEONTAY WILDER'S DISAPPOINTING COMEBACK: SHELL OF FORMER SELF IN TKO WIN OVER HERDON

Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder (43-4-1, 43 KOs) looked like a shell of his former self in knocking out journeyman Tyrrell Anthony Herndon (24-6, 15 KOs) in the seventh round in his comeback on Friday night at the Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kansas.

Wilder landed two clubbing right hands to the head of the exhausted Herndon in the seventh, prompting referee Ray Corona to stop the fight. The time was at 2:16 of round seven.

WILDER’S POWER, SPEED GONE

Herndon, 37, was down in rounds 2 and 6. The knockdown in round two was from a left hand by Deontay that caught Herndon when he was jumping in to land a shot. In the sixth, Wilder caught Tyrell against the ropes and clubbed him with shots, knocking him down with a right uppercut.

Deontay’s deterioration

  • Loss of hand speed
  • Power is gone in the right hand
  • Poor accuracy
  • Timid

Wilder couldn’t land with any degree of accuracy, even with Herndon standing still right in front of him. Repeatedly, DEONTAY the would miss with his right and left hands.

What was noticeable was the loss of hand speed, power, and accuracy with Wilder. His right hand was a lot slower than it used to be, and it didn’t possess the same crushing power as it used to. He’d said in an interview this week that he’d been dealing with a right shoulder problem which had affected his power in that arm.

He said that the injury had healed. However, Deontay’s lack of power and loss of hand speed with his right showed that the injury was still there. If this is a permanent situation, Wilder isn’t going to do well against any heavyweight from the top 15. Herndon isn’t a top-tier fighter.

Wilder Must Fight Joshua Now

It would be a good idea for ‘The Bronze Bomber’ to try to make the fight with Anthony Joshua as soon as possible. It would be too risky for Deontay to off that fight because he can’t keep fighting low-level opposition like he did tonight without fans criticizing him.

WILDER’S LEFT HAND SHINES

Tonight, Deontay’s best weapon was his left hand. His jab and left hook appeared as good as it was in the past. However, that wouldn’t be enough for Wilder to beat good heavyweights. The way he looked tonight, he’d lose to the bottom feeders ranked #15 in the division.

CRICKET: AUSTRALIA CRUSH WEST INDIES IN BARBADOS

Australia ruthlessly completed a 159-run victory over West Indies in the first test, with Nathan Lyon sweeping up the tail after Josh Hazlewood's five-wicket masterclass broke the hosts' resistance on a pitch that deteriorated into a bowler's paradise.

Lyon claimed the final two wickets in consecutive deliveries, ending Shamar Joseph's entertaining knock at 44 from just 22 balls, as West Indies were dismissed for 141 chasing an improbable 301 to hand Australia a 1-0 series lead.

"There was enough in the wicket, up-and-down from a length," said Hazlewood, who finished with figures of five for 43.

"It's just about hitting that area time and time again and being patient. I'm just enjoying cricket, tests at the moment. Good team, atmosphere.

"I think once we saw West Indies take the second new ball today, we thought things could happen, but not that fast. There's a few cracks on a length from one end, some went low and we got a few bowled and lbws."

Hazlewood's victims included John Campbell (caught behind attempting a scoop), Brandon King (edging to gully first ball), Roston Chase (popping to short leg) and Keacy Carty (bowled by vicious seam movement), before completing his 13th test five-wicket haul by having Warrican caught at slip.

Pat Cummins added Shai Hope's wicket with another delivery that kept fatally low, while substitute fielder Marnus Labuschagne's direct hit ran out Alzarri Joseph to underline Australia's superiority in all departments.

Earlier, Australia had methodically constructed their match-winning position through intelligent batting across three sessions.

Beau Webster (63) and Travis Head (61) forged the match's first century partnership before Head was left sprawled face-down by a Shamar Joseph delivery that scuttled beneath his bat.

Alex Carey's enterprising 65, featuring a spectacular six onto the stadium roof, effectively sealed the contest despite Joseph claiming his own five-wicket haul with a tireless display of seam bowling.

The day's dramatic shifts perfectly encapsulated test cricket's unpredictability, from morning resistance to afternoon collapse, with Australia demonstrating precisely why they remain the format's benchmark team.

JAKE PAUL AND JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ JR. MAKE CRUISERWEIGHT LIMIT

Some of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s biggest fights have come against the scale, but the second-generation fighter didn’t have issues making the cruiserweight limit ahead of his 10-round clash against Jake Paul on Saturday.

Paul (11-1, 7 KOs) weighed 199.4 pounds, while Chavez (54-6-1, 34 KOs) tipped the scales at a career-high 198.4 pounds on Friday ahead of their fight at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Paul and Chavez faced off without incident for MVP and Golden Boy’s co-promoted event, which will stream on DAZN PPV beginning at 5 p.m. PST.

Chavez came into the weigh-in having missed weight in high-profile fights (and losses) in recent years against Anderson Silva and Daniel Jacobs, and other times before that, in a career that started in 2003.

Chavez has been competing as a cruiserweight since 2021, and the besmirched boxer is 8-4 dating back to 2012, when he was an undefeated middleweight title holder at the time. But at 39, a faded Chavez is promising a rejuvenated version of himself to regain respect with a turn-back-the-clock-like performance.

Paul, meanwhile, is looking to use Chavez as a stepping stone to get ranked and chase a world title run.

In the co-main event, WBA and WBO cruiserweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (47-1, 30 KOs), from Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, weighed in at 199.8 pounds, while Miami-based Cuban challenger Yuniel Dorticos (27-2, 25 KOs) weighed 198.6 pounds.

Ramirez seeks to cement his status in the division with his first stoppage win in the weight class as a possible unification fight looms against Jai Opetaia.
