49ERS HEAD COACH KYLE SHANAHAN INVILVED IN CAR CRASH, SUFFERES SEVERAL INJURIES

None of the injuries Shanahan suffered are life-threatening and his duties will be limited during training camp

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident last week in which he suffered several injuries, none of which are life-threatening, the team announced on Saturday.

Shanahan, 46, sustained a broken nose, three broken ribs and a broken hand. He also required over 40 stitches in his face and suffered a severe concussion, according to ESPN.

General manager John Lynch will meet with reporters on Saturday afternoon to discuss the developments.

In a statement, the 49ers announced that assistant head coach Chris Foerster would handle Shanahan's head-coaching duties while Shanahan recovers, along with several coordinators on the staff.

"San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident last week where he suffered non-life-threatening injuries," the statement read. "Coach Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp while he recovers. Coach Shanahan and the 49ers organization would like to sincerely thank all first responders involved for their efforts and care.

"Assistant head coach Chris Foerster, along with team coordinators, will handle head coach responsibilities during this period."

The accident occurred on July 14, ESPN's Adam Schefter and Nick Wagoner report. Shanahan's vehicle collided with an SUV near his home in northern California. He was taken by paramedics to a local hospital and spent most of the day there until he was released.

The other driver involved in the accident was not injured, according to Palo Alto police. Drugs and alcohol were not involved, both drivers were cooperative with law enforcement and no one was cited in the collision.

"Consistent with our standard release of information procedures in such cases, we do not release information regarding the cause of the collision, or which party may have been at fault," said Palo Alto lieutenant Nicholas Martinez, via ESPN.

Shanahan reportedly informed the 49ers assistant coaches of the accident on Tuesday. He has been recovering at home and is apparently recuperating well, but doctors will not clear him to participate in training camp activities until he is free of concussion symptoms. The 49ers open training camp on Sunday.

Foerster, 64, is in his second stint with the 49ers, joining Shanahan's staff in 2019 as a game-planning assistant before being promoted to offensive line coach. He added run coordinator duties in 2022 and three seasons later was moved up to assistant head coach.

Shanahan is going into his 10th season as 49ers head coach and has compiled an 82-67 regular-season record. He is 11 victories away from overtaking Bill Walsh for second on the team’s all-time list and 17 away from most in franchise history.

Legendary former jockey Frankie Dettori has been rushed to the hospital following a serious car accident in Suffolk – with the accident happening at British horse racing HQ – Newmarket.

According to his management team, H Talent Management, the terrifying incident happened on the evening of Wednesday, July 1, in Newmarket.

Another vehicle reportedly struck the rear passenger side of Dettori’s car, causing it to spin out of control and flip over.

Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene, and the 55-year-old was taken straight to the nearby hospital.

Frankie Dettori Suffers Broken Ribs and Thumb In Newmarket Car Crash

Doctors have confirmed that horse racing legend Dettori sustained a few broken ribs and a broken thumb.

He remains hospitalized under close observation while medical staff run further scans to fully assess his injuries.

In an official statement, his agency shared a message from the racing icon:

“Frankie would like to thank the emergency services who attended the scene, together with the doctors, nurses and wider medical team caring for him. His focus is now on resting and recovering. H Talent Management respectfully asks that Frankie’s privacy is respected at this time. No further comment will be made until there is a meaningful update.”

This frightening setback comes just a few months after Dettori officially hung up his saddle in February, following a high-profile farewell tour through America and Brazil.

His final race in Britain was an unforgettable one-a spectacular victory aboard King Of Steel in the Champion Stakes at Ascot three years ago.

While Frankie had been enjoying his hard-earned retirement, he was already locked in for a highly anticipated comeback this autumn, signing up for the charity Legends race at Doncaster’s St Leger meeting in September.

Given the nature of his injuries, however, those plans are now up in the air as his recovery takes absolute priority. With the race on Friday September 11, 2026.

Frankie Dettori Pulled Out Of Plane Crash in Newmarket in 2000

The recent Frankie Dettori car crash in Newmarket, isn’t the first time the former champion jockey has had a serious accident at British horse racing’s HQ.

On 1 June 2000, Frankie Dettori survived one of the most harrowing incidents in British racing history when a light aircraft carrying him, fellow jockey Ray Cochrane and pilot Patrick Mackey crashed moments after taking off from Newmarket Racecourse.

The trio had been travelling to Goodwood for an afternoon of racing when the Piper Seneca failed to gain sufficient height, struck an embankment known as the Devil’s Dyke and burst into flames.

Pilot Patrick Mackey was tragically killed in the accident, while Dettori and Cochrane escaped from the wreckage in what police described as a “miracle.”

Dettori suffered a broken right ankle, facial cuts and other injuries that ruled him out of racing for several months, while Cochrane sustained burns and bruising.

In the moments after the crash, Cochrane managed to pull Dettori from the wreckage before bravely attempting to rescue Mackey, but the intense flames made it impossible to reach the pilot. Cochrane’s actions later earned him the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery in recognition of his efforts to save his fellow jockey.

The accident had a profound effect on Dettori, who has spoken openly in the years since about believing he was about to die as the aircraft came down.

The experience changed his outlook on both racing and life, with the Italian admitting he became more focused on spending time with his family and appreciating every opportunity he had in the saddle.

Despite the traumatic ordeal, he returned later that season and went on to enjoy many of the greatest successes of his career, including further Classic victories, multiple Royal Ascot triumphs and becoming one of the sport’s most celebrated jockeys.

An investigation by the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch was unable to determine a single definitive cause of the crash, although it concluded the aircraft failed to climb properly after take-off and struck the embankment before crashing.

More than two decades later, the Newmarket plane crash remains one of the defining moments of Dettori’s life and career, serving as a stark reminder of how close horse racing came to losing one of its greatest stars.

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Manninger has died at the age of 48 after his car was struck by a train.

Police  the incident happened at about 08:20 local time (07:20 BST) at a level crossing near Salzburg.

Manninger made 64 appearances for Arsenal between 1997 and 2002, winning the Premier League and FA Cup.

He won 33 caps for Austria and was part of the squad that featured at Euro 2008 in his home country.

"Alexander Manninger was an outstanding ambassador for Austrian football, both on and off the pitch," said Austrian Football Association sporting director Peter Schottel.

"His professionalism, composure and reliability made him an integral part of his teams and the national team.

"His achievements deserve the utmost respect and will be unforgettable."

Salzburg police said first responders used a defibrillator on Manninger, who was alone in the car, after he was freed from the vehicle, which was dragged along by the train, but could not resuscitate him.

Police also said that the train driver was unharmed.

Manninger began his career with hometown club Red Bull Salzburg and spent time with 14 teams across Europe, including Sienna, Juventus, Udinese and Augsburg.

He signed a short-term deal with Liverpool as a 39-year-old in 2016 but did not play.

During his time at Arsenal, Manninger largely played second fiddle to David Seaman, but deputised for the injured England keeper late in the 1997-98 season.

That season, Manninger helped Arsenal beat West Ham on penalties in the FA Cup sixth round and impressed in a memorable win against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Manninger was named Premier League player of the month for March 1998.

Arsenal awarded Manninger a league winner's medal following the 1997-98 season despite him not having played the required number of games ordinarily required.

"All our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this incredibly sad time."

Red Bull Salzburg said they "mourn" their former goalkeeper, while Liverpool said they were "deeply saddened" by the news.

Manninger made 42 appearances for Juventus, filling in for injured first-choice stopper Gianluigi Buffon.

"Today is a terribly sad day," Juventus posted on X.

"He has left us not only as a great athlete, but as a man of rare values: humility, dedication, and an extraordinary professional seriousness.

"Juventus expresses its condolences for the passing of Alex Manninger and stands with the family in this moment of grief."

KIMI ANTONELLI INVOLVED IN A CAR CRASH BEFORE BAHRAIN TESTS

Kimi Antonelli was involved in a road accident in San Marino just days before the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend. The incident occurred while he was driving his AMG GT 63 PRO Motorsport Collectors Edition when the car hit safety barriers. The crash immediately raised concern given the timing.

According to reports Antonelli was checked by medical staff shortly after the incident. He was confirmed to be in good condition with no serious injuries. That confirmation quickly eased worries across the paddock and among fans.

Despite visible damage to the vehicle the driver himself escaped unharmed. Sources close to the situation stressed that this was a road incident and not related to any on track activity. The focus shifted quickly from speculation to recovery and readiness.

Most importantly Antonelli is expected to take part in the upcoming Bahrain tests as planned. Teams see this as a key phase for preparation and there is no indication that his schedule will change. His physical condition has been cleared with no restrictions.

ANTHONY JOSHUA POSTS UPDATE FOR FIRST TIME SINCE CAR CRASH

Anthony Joshua has posted on social media for the first time since he was injured in a car crash that killed two of his close friends in Nigeria.

The British boxer, 36, was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck on a major expressway near Lagos.

His close friends and team members Sina Ghami and Latif "Latz" Ayodele died in the crash. Their funerals took place at a London mosque on Sunday.

The former two-time heavyweight champion was taken to hospital and discharged on Wednesday before returning to the UK this weekend.

On Sunday morning he posted two pictures on Instagram, one which shows him sitting alongside his mother and three women, with one holding a photograph of Ghami.

The post has the caption: "My Brothers Keeper."

Driver Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was charged at Sagamu Magistrates' Court on Friday. Police sources told the BBC the charges included causing death by dangerous driving.

 "The defendant was granted bail of 5m naira (£2,578) and remanded pending his bail conditions being met. The case has been adjourned until 20 January.

Joshua, who was born in Watford, has family roots in Sagamu - a town in Ogun state, near the crash site.

The 2012 Olympic champion was on his way to visit relatives for New Year celebrations in the town at the time of the collision, a family member told the BBC.

The boxer had been spending time in Nigeria after his recent victory over American YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul on 19 December.

ANTHONY JOSHUA CRASH: WHAT CAR HE WAS TRAVELLING IN AND CAUSE REVEALED

Two-time heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a fatal crash on Monday 29 December that left him injured and tragically killed two of his friends and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have now detail what they've found in the preliminary investigation in relation to the cause of the crash.

Just days after he defeated Jake Paul in Miami, Joshua was enjoying some downtime in Nigeria – a country he is mightily proud of given his heritage – when he and his close pals Sinha Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele, both of whom were pronounced dead at the scene, crashed.

After being rescued by witnesses from the wreckage of the vehicle, Joshua has been taken to a local Nigerian hospital to recover and get the treatment he needs. The families of the British boxer's associates, Ghami and Ayodele, who were killed in the crash, have been notified.

Full Statement From Federal Road Safety Corps After Joshua Crash

Nigeria's Federal Road Safety Corps took to X (formerly Twitter) to provide a detailed explanation into the incident that took the lives of Ayodele and Ghami. "Preliminary reports from the Ogun Sector Command indicate that the crash occurred at about 1200HRS and was promptly reported to the Corps," they wrote before going over their swift response to the call.

"FRSC operatives arrived at the scene within three (3) minutes of notification, enabling swift rescue operations, evacuation of victims, effective traffic control, and prevention of secondary crashes.

"Two persons sadly lost their lives, one sustained injuries, while two others escaped unhurt. Anthony Joshua was rescued alive and sustained minor injuries," the statement continued, before the vehicle was identified as a black Lexus Jeep, which crashed into a stationary red commercial Sinotruck.

"The injured victim was evacuated for medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were conveyed to Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu. The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD) was duly notified for further investigation and necessary documentation."

Initial findings from local authorities have revealed that Joshua's Lexus Jeep was travelling over the 'legally prescribed' speed limit on the road, which links Lagos to northern, southern and eastern parts of the country. The vehicle then lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into a stationary truck well packed by the side of the road. The statement concluded:

"The primary causes of the crash being excessive speed and wrongful overtaking constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways."

Elsewhere, as reported by the BBC, Police Commander Babatunde Akinbiyi of Nigeria's Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) said early investigations showed the Lexus "experienced a tyre burst due to excessive speed" when travelling along the highway from Lagos to Sagamu when it "lost control".

Following the news of Joshua being involved in a car crash in Nigera, Matchroom Boxing figurehead and the 36-year-old's promoter, Eddie Hearn, has come out to offer support to his client and long-term friend, who is eyeing a fight with fellow heavyweight Tyson Fury.

"Matchroom Boxing and 258 BXG can confirm that Anthony sustained injuries in the accident and was taken to hospital for checks and treatment," he wrote before adding: "He is in a stable condition and will remain there for observation.

"Our deepest condolences and prayers are with the families and friends of all those affected - and we ask that their privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time. No further comment will be made at this time."

Paul, Joshua's latest opponent inside the ring, also voiced his support. He wrote: "Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident." He later added: "RIP Sina Ghami and Kevin “Latif / Latz” Ayodele. My thoughts and prayers are with their families and friends and AJ."

Spanish police say "all the evidence so far" shows Diogo Jota was driving the vehicle which crashed last week, killing the Liverpool footballer and his brother.

Authorities said they also believe evidence is pointing towards the vehicle "significantly exceeding the speed limit for the highway".

The accident happened at 12.30am local time on Thursday (11.30pm Wednesday BST) on the A-52 motorway in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora.

The report is being prepared and finalised.

"Among other things, the marks left by one of the vehicle's wheels are being examined," the statement from the Civil Guard in Zamora added.

His brother, Andre Silva, was also killed in the crash on the Rias Bajas Highway (A-52) near Palacios de Sanabria, heading towards Benavente.

The footballing world is in shock following the sad news that Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva have died in a car accident in Spain.

Liverpool Football Club have released a statement saying that they are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota, and Portuguese teammate Cristiano Ronaldo has said that Diogo's death "doesn't make sense". With this sad news, you too may be feeling all kinds of emotions.

We spoke to Dr Radha Modgil to get her thoughts on what you can do if you are feeling upset by this news. Here's what she told us.

How to deal with grief when someone famous dies

Radha says: "When someone dies, we can experience lots of different feelings which are completely normal to feel. We can feel shocked, sad, angry, confused, numb, worried and sometimes even not want to believe it has happened. All of these emotions are part of our grief reaction – our reaction to loss. Grief is really a reflection of how much we loved or cared for that person and how much we miss them."

"We can feel all of these things if it is someone that we know, but it can also happen when we haven’t met that person directly, like with our favourite celebrities. It may come as a surprise to us that we feel this way, and so we can sometimes think we ‘shouldn’t feel that way’ or we have ‘no right or rhyme or reason’ to feel like this. This can make us hide our feelings, not talk about them, or push them down without processing what has happened. But there are real, logical and beautiful reasons why we feel the loss of someone we may never have met, and if we embrace these, we can allow our feelings of grief to come up and process them in a healthy way."

"As human beings, we form all kinds of different types relationships with those around us, and it is the same with famous people. We might admire them, their skill, what they brought to the world. We miss that role of being a mentor in our lives and miss how they touched our lives. Humans have a very special quality – to connect with each other and each other’s lives, experiences and stories, and that is why we grieve people we have never met."

"Famous people are also often part of our daily lives – we may have seen them very frequently online, or TV, or on their socials, or in football matches or films. That contact may have helped us feel safe and given us a sense of routine and certainty. It made us feel like we knew them. When they are no longer there, we can feel very confused and lost. That connection we formed with them is gone and that can be hard. It can be even harder if their personalities, what they did or what they loved reflected parts of ourselves."

"We may love playing football, or their song lyric may have touched our lives at a time we needed to hear it, their history and their struggles in life may resonate with ours. We see a part of ourselves in them. That can make their death hard for us to cope with. We grieve for the world and society sometimes when someone famous dies, as we can see that they brought a lot to the world."

What should I do when someone dies?

"All of us, at some point in our lives, will have people around us die. We all have our own experiences of losing people we love from our past, and when someone famous dies, those feelings can be triggered again and echoes of all those emotions and the person who died can come flooding back."

"Death can also feel scary – it is hard to understand and can make us feel worried or uncertain about what can happen in life. It can be a real shock when we lose someone unexpectedly and make us feel anxious. Understanding all of these reasons for our emotions can help us cope and get the support we need. So how can we cope?"

Talk to someone

The best thing we can do is to talk to someone – that may be a trusted adult, or others who are feeling the same way that you do, and friends who may have also admired that famous person and understands how you feel. Talking things through can help you realise why you are feeling a certain way, can help you untangle thoughts in your mind and help you feel safe and supported.

Feeling your feelings and allowing whatever emotion you feel to come up and to be expressed is so helpful. Don’t judge yourself or push feelings down or think you ‘shouldn’t feel that way'. Talking can help you express how you feel, but there are lots of other ways too – getting active, listening to music, walking in nature, doing the hobby you love, or writing it all down – whatever helps you is the answer. There is no right or wrong when you are grieving someone, just listening to yourself and respecting your emotions.

Find ways to remember them – that might be joining with other fans in a moment of remembrance at a football match, or getting some friends together to share memories of their best moments may help you to process how you feel.

Give yourself time and space to allow yourself to find your way through how you feel – grief can stay with us but becomes less overwhelming as we process our emotions, as we find ways to remember the joy that that person brought, and find ways to honour their legacy and ensure they will never be forgotten.

If you are feeling worried talk to a trusted adult about how you feel – we will all experience grief at some point and need to support each other through it.

ALIJAH ARENAS COPS DON'T SUSPECT ALCOHOL OR DRUGS ... Were Factor In Car Crash

Drugs, Alcohol NOT Suspected In Alijah Arenas Car Accident

Alijah Arenas' Cybertruck ended up wrapped around a tree in an L.A. suburb early Thursday morning -- and the cause is still a mystery -- but investigators do NOT believe alcohol or drugs were a factor.

TMZ Sports spoke with our law enforcement sources ... and we're told LAPD didn't observe any signs of intoxication at the scene, just moments after the 18-year-old 5-star recruit was pulled from his burning vehicle around 4:55 AM.

After Arenas was transported to a local hospital, cops followed up ... but the soon-to-be USC basketball star was already intubated (tube down his throat), so no blood draw was done.

We're told law enforcement believes speed was the main factor in the one-car crash ... combined with a young driver and a fast vehicle (Elon's truck, depending on the model, goes 0-60 MPH in ~2.6 seconds).

Bottom line -- there's currently no criminal investigation underway.

As for Alijah's medical status, on Friday, a rep for the Arenas family told us the young hooper was making solid progress ... but was not yet out of the woods.

West Ham forward Michail Antonio has stepped up his recovery from a horrific car crash with a 12 day warm-weather rehabilitation programme in Dubai.

The Jamaica international was involved in a deeply concerning car accident in December which saw him escape with a broken leg.

The images of the wreckage raised major fears for Antonio's long-term well-being.

But the 34-year-old is now on the road to recovery and is currently in Dubai completing a training programme ahead of a potential return.

Antonio is said to be making positive and steady progress during the programme in the United Arab Emirates.

After the crash, Antonio needed to be released from his car after becoming trapped during the incident on December 7 in Epping, Essex, and was taken to a central London hospital.

He was eventually operated on after suffering a lower leg fracture.

On New Year's Eve, Antonio posted on social media: 'Every year around this time, I'm asked what I'm grateful for, and every year I've struggled to find the right words. But this year, I know exactly what I'm grateful for: being alive.

'I've spent so many years taking life for granted. I made plans for the next day, the next year, always assuming tomorrow was guaranteed. I've seen close friends pass away, witnessed others face near-death experiences, and even then I didn't fully grasp just how precious life is,' Antonio said.
