Former Liverpool footballer Raheem Sterling has been charged with dangerous driving and possession of nitrous oxide after a crash involving a Lamborghini on a motorway, police said.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said the charges followed a single-vehicle collision on the M3 southbound, near Minley interchange, on May 28. The 31-year-old former England winger is accused of dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation and failing to provide a specimen. The force said no other vehicles were involved in the collision and no injuries were reported.

Sterling, from Berkshire, is due to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates' Court for a hearing on September 15.

He scored 20 goals in 82 appearances for England, helping Gareth Southgate's side reach the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the final of Euro 2020. He came through the academy at QPR before joining Liverpool, where he made his senior debut.

Sterling, who was born in Kingston, Jamaica, moved to Manchester City in 2015 and won four Premier League titles, five League Cups and the FA Cup in 2019. He left for Chelsea in 2022 but after falling out of favour spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Arsenal.

After leaving Stamford Bridge, Sterling joined Dutch club Feyenoord on a short-term deal until the end of the season. He is currently without a club.

In the 2021 Queen's Birthday Honours, Sterling was made an MBE for services to racial equality in sport after fronting anti-racism and discrimination campaigns and speaking out strongly against racism on and off the pitch for several years.

It came amid controversy over England fans booing players taking the knee at matches as a gesture against intolerance.

JOTA'S CAR WAS PROBABLY SPEEDING BEFORE FATAL CRASH, SPANISH POLICE SAY

All the evidence so far suggests Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota was driving when his car crashed on a Spanish motorway, and he was probably speeding, say police.

The 28-year-old Liverpool player was killed with his brother André Silva, 25, when their Lamborghini car had a suspected tyre blowout in northwestern Zamora province early last Thursday.

Spain's Guardia Civil police force said at the time the car had apparently been overtaking on the A52 motorway near Palacios de Sanabria when it left the road and burst into flames.

"Everything also points to a possible excessive speed beyond the speed limit of the road [highway]," said Zamora's local traffic police.

Police said they had studied the marks left by one of the Lamborghini's tyres and that "all the tests carried out so far indicate that the driver of the crashed vehicle was Diogo Jota".

The expert report is being prepared for the courts on the accident, and their investigation is understood to have been made more complex by the intensity of the fire that almost completely destroyed the car.

The accident happened 11 days after Jota had married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso in Portugal. The couple had three children.

The brothers had been heading to the Spanish port of Santander so Jota could return to Liverpool for pre-season training.

Their funeral took place in their hometown of Gondomar, near Porto at the weekend.

Tyre marks were reportedly visible about 100m (330ft) from the moment of impact.

Although there had been suggestions that the asphalt on the road was uneven where the crash took place, police told Spanish media it was not an accident "black spot" and the road should have been driveable beyond the speed limit of 120km/h (75mph).

CHIEFS RASHEE RICE FACES 8 CHARGES IN RELATION TO HIGH-SPEED CRASH

 DALLAS -- Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice faces eight charges, including aggravated assault, after he and another speeding driver of a sports car caused a recent chain-reaction crash, Dallas police said Wednesday.

Police said arrest warrants have been issued for Rice, 23, for one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury.

Rice's attorney, state Sen. Royce West, said last week that Rice had been driving a Lamborghini sport utility vehicle when the crash occurred.

Arrest warrants for the same charges were also issued for Theodore Knox, 21, who was driving the other speeding sports car, a Corvette, police said.

Police said Rice and Knox were not in custody.

"We have fully cooperated with law enforcement," said Knox's attorney, Deandra Grant. "Other than that we have no further comment at this time."

Police have said the drivers of the Corvette and Lamborghini were speeding in the far left lane on March 31, when they lost control and the Lamborghini traveled onto the shoulder and hit the center median wall, causing the chain collision.

The crash involved the Lamborghini, a Corvette and four other vehicles and left four people with minor injuries, police have said. Police said the drivers of the Corvette and Lamborghini left following the crash without determining whether anyone needed medical attention or providing their information.

According to WFAA-TV in Dallas, the police report also said that marijuana was found in both cars, as well as credit cards, a $16,500 check, a diamond chain and a Chiefs playbook.

Rice was leasing the Lamborghini from The Classic Lifestyle, said Kyle Coker, an attorney for the Dallas-based exotic car rental company. West said the Corvette belonged to Rice.

Police said the passengers in the two speeding sports cars who left the scene will not be charged.

Rice last week posted to his Instagram story that he was taking "full responsibility" for his part in the wreck.

Aggravated assault, a second-degree felony, is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Collision involving bodily injury, a third-degree felony, is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and collision involving injury is punishable by up to five years in prison.

Rice was born in Philadelphia but grew up in the Fort Worth, Texas, suburb of North Richland Hills. He played college football at nearby SMU, where a breakout senior season in 2022 put the wide receiver on the radar of NFL teams.

The Chiefs selected him in the second round of last year's draft, and he quickly became one of the only dependable options in their passing game.

 Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was driving the Lamborghini at the center of a six-car, hit-and-run crash in Dallas on Saturday, Rice's attorney said Thursday in a news conference.

Two people were hospitalized with minor injuries sustained in the chain-reaction collision that occurred after Rice's Lamborghini and a Corvette crashed while speeding, police said. Two others were treated for lesser injuries at the scene.

Royce West, Rice's attorney, said Rice "wants to make certain it's understood and appreciated that he's going to do everything in his power to bring their life back to as normal as possible."

West said Rice knows someone could have been seriously injured.

"He understands that, he appreciates that, that's why he wanted to come out and say he's going to be responsible for making certain that the victims are made whole as best as possible," the lawyer said.

Rice and the driver of the Corvette both fled the scene, according to police, and West said "that's still being investigated." He said Rice is cooperating with police.

On Wednesday, Rice met with police and apologized on social media for his role in the crash.

"Today I met with Dallas PD investigators regarding Saturday's accident. I take full responsibility for my part in this matter and will continue to cooperate with the necessary authorities," he posted to his Instagram story. "I sincerely apologize to everyone impacted in Saturday's accident."

Rice, who turns 24 on April 22, grew up in the North Texas suburb of North Richland Hills and attended college in Dallas at SMU.

He recorded 79 catches and 938 yards with a team-leading seven touchdown receptions in 16 games (eight starts) last year after being selected by Kansas City in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He also had 26 catches for 262 yards and a score in four playoff games to help the Chiefs secure their second straight Super Bowl title.

 DALLAS (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was leasing a Lamborghini sport utility vehicle that authorities say was one of two speeding sports cars that caused a chain-reaction crash on a Dallas highway, an attorney for the company that owns the vehicle said Tuesday.

Dallas police have not confirmed whether Rice was involved in Saturday's crash, which caused minor injuries. The occupants of the Lamborghini and the other speeding vehicle — a Corvette — left without determining if anyone needed medical attention or providing their information, police said. A total of six vehicles were involved in the crash.

An attorney for Rice said this week that the NFL player was cooperating with authorities but has not elaborated.

Rice was leasing the Lamborghini from The Classic Lifestyle, said Kyle Coker, an attorney for the Dallas-based exotic car rental company. He said that contractually, Rice would have been the only person allowed to drive the vehicle, which rents for about $1,750 a day and is worth about $250,000.

Police have said that the drivers of a Corvette and a Lamborghini were speeding in the far-left lane of North Central Expressway when they lost control. The Lamborghini went onto the shoulder and hit the center median wall, causing a chain-reaction collision. Four people in the other vehicles were treated for minor injuries.

Police said Tuesday that they were still working to identify suspects. Police have not released any information about the people they are seeking, including whether Rice was among them.

Rice's attorney, state Sen. Royce West, said that Rice “will take all necessary steps to address this situation responsibly.” West did not respond to questions Tuesday and has not said whether Rice was driving one of the vehicles.

Rice, a member of the Super Bowl-winning Chiefs team, is from the Dallas area. He played for Southern Methodist University and grew up in the Fort Worth suburb of North Richland Hills.
