SHAQUILLE O'NEAL ON MEETING HIS BIOLOGICAL FATHER AFTER 47 YEARS

Shaquille O'Neal’s journey to meeting his biological father after 47 years is one of the most mind-blowing stories of coincidence, grace, and forgiveness you will ever hear.

For decades, Shaq lived without his biological dad, Joe Toney. He was proudly raised by his stepfather, Phillip Harrison, a strict Army drill sergeant who shaped him into a legend. Shaq harbored so much resentment toward the man who left that he even wrote a 90s rap song titled, "Biological Didn’t Bother."

But after his stepfather passed away, his mother urged him to do the unthinkable: find the man who abandoned him.

When Shaq started tracking him down, he uncovered an unbelievable coincidence. Here is how Shaq described exactly what happened:

"My mother said you should connect with your biological father. I called my uncle who's a cop. He said, 'You ain't gonna believe this, you know that restaurant we eat at all the time? He lives in that building.'"

His biological dad was living directly above a soul food spot in Newark, New Jersey, that Shaq frequented all the time. Suddenly, a strange detail from Shaq's past made total sense:

"There was always a chef there who'd start crying when he saw me. He said, 'I'm Joe's best friend. I just hope one day you come down here and y'all can eat.'"

Eventually, Shaq made that walk to finally meet the man he hadn't seen since he was a baby. When his father tried to apologize, Shaq stopped him. Instead of anger, he offered total grace:

"He's 40 blocks away. I went to meet him. He said sorry. I said, you don't need to say sorry, everybody has their problems. I don't judge. I don't have the right to judge. I had a good life. I had Phil."

NBA Hall of Famer and moonlighting MC Shaquille O'Neal has officially released the first-ever Jay-Z and Nas collaboration on the reissue of his 1996 album You Can't Stop the Reign.

Shaq Officially Puts First Jay-Z and Nas Collab on Album Re-Release

After teasing fans with the record on Thursday (June 27), Shaq followed through on Friday (June 28) by delivering an updated version of his third studio album. The rerelease has the track "No Love Lost" featuring Jay-Z, Nas and Lord Tariq. The track marks the first-ever time Hov and Esco appeared on a song together.

On the Trackmasters-produced banger, which can be heard below, the then-burgeoning rappers are sharp with the bars as it would have been recorded around the time Jigga put out his debut album Reasonable Doubt, and Nas was on the heels of his sophomore LP It Was Written.

"Fo' sho', everything's for dough now/The flow, y'all gotta pay a little mo' now," Hov spits. "It's platinum, nowadays we put the gold down/We stepped it up, y'all don't ever wanna showdown/Get wetted up by the sleeve that leave the bezel out/Y'all don't like it, sue me, I'll settled out/Ghettoed out, in the vehicle bent/These days I mellowed out."

Shaq and Tariq slide on beat. Mid-90s Nas goes in as well. "I spent nights on corners, see the crack, cop my first smack/No longer scared to pump with y'all pump/Now I burst back, it hurts that," Nas raps. "Don't see cream can make my purse fat/Without the benefits of a doubt, I hit the hearse black/But curse that, try to see Nas was your worst match/Blowing like Tahiti, throw off NYPD, am I greedy?/Like I mean E.D. see me in the fly/Selena Gibby frames in a beanie."

The History of "No Love Lost"

The song sans Nas originally appeared on the You Can't Stop the Reign album when it debuted in November of 1996. The version with Nas appeared on the DJ Clue mixtape Fall Pt. 1 the same year the album version was released. It was later circulated on music file-sharing services.

Shaq revealed during an interview on the Drink Champs Podcast in 2022 that he couldn't end up clearing Nas' verse. "I didn’t take it personal because, again, me being in the studio with Nas, I’m happy," Shaq said. Now, it is appearing on DSPs for the first time.

SHAQUILLE O'NEAL'S NO. 32 JERSEY IS THE FIRST TO BE RETIRED

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Shaquille O'Neal was Orlando's first in lots of ways. First No. 1 overall draft pick. First player to make an All-Star team in a Magic uniform. First rookie of the year. First All-NBA selection. And the first big-time superstar to leave the franchise.

It's that last part that he figured might cost him.

O'Neal never thought that the Magic would raise his jersey to the rafters of their arena. But he was wrong, and on Tuesday night, Orlando retired O'Neal's No. 32 — another first for the team and its first star. Most fans stayed for the postgame ceremony, even after the Magic fell to Oklahoma City.

“You know, there’s an old saying: Never forget where you come from," O'Neal said. “And my professional career started here. I’ve been living here mostly all my life. The fans have been hospitable. The people have been very, very hospitable. I never thought this day would happen.”

The Magic, who are celebrating their 35th season, drafted O'Neal No. 1 overall in 1992. They've never retired a number for a player, but decided their anniversary season was the right time. Many of O'Neal's former Orlando teammates were there Tuesday night, including Penny Hardaway, Dennis Scott and Nick Anderson. O'Neal brought Anderson to the lectern at one point in the ceremony, telling him he should have been the first to get the jersey retirement from the Magic.
