Johnny Herbert believes Max Verstappen was “unprofessional and disrespectful” on the Saudi Arabian GP podium after finishing second to Oscar Piastri on Sunday.
Former F1 race winner Herbert added that Verstappen should have been given a 10-second penalty for the incident at turn one on lap one with Piastri, instead of a five-second penalty.
Pole-sitter Verstappen came out second best with McLaren’s Piastri in Jeddah and was clearly annoyed by the penalty given to him, refusing to directly answer a question on the topic from David Coulthard on the grid after the race.
In the customary podium celebrations afterwards, Verstappen did not spray champagne in the usual manner with Piastri and third-placed driver Leclerc – something Herbert picked up on.
"I saw Max Verstappen drink the champagne on the podium and didn't really celebrate [with] Oscar or Charles – it comes across as unprofessional and disrespectful, from a four-time world champion,” Herbert said.
“You have to be gracious in defeat sometimes. I don't know how people will argue that it was an unfair penalty.
“The people arguing against it have probably never been in a race car, and definitely not in an F1 car, so they have zero understanding. I'll include Christian Horner in this, too.
“I know he's the team principal and he's trying to do what's best for Red Bull, but sometimes you have to just admit you're wrong and give the place back. Most drivers are very aware of when they should give the place back."
Red Bull boss Horner argued after the race, via still images from Verstappen’s onboard camera, that his driver was “ahead at the apex” and should not have been penalised.

"It was a definite penalty, because when you go into any corner, especially a tight one like that, you've got to be on the apex near the curb,” Herbert added, in partnership with Beste Online Casino Nederland. “The apex of the turn was not where Verstappen was, who was two metres out.
"Horner then came up with the picture of evidence to show who was in front in turn one, which was a load of baloney, but to me, it was passing the buck to the FIA and the stewards.
“It's wrong, it shouldn't be like that. Red Bull had a chance to give the place back but they chose not to.”
Red Bull, ultimately, decided not to officially appeal the penalty afterwards.
Herbert was dropped as an F1 race steward in January after being criticised by Verstappen’s dad, Jos, for commenting on the Dutchman’s driving style as a media pundit, alongside being an official.
Herbert was critical of Verstappen’s driving style in Mexico last year, when the former British driver was part of the stewarding panel who dished out a 20-second penalty to the Red Bull driver. This incident prompted Jos to rebuke: “I think a steward shouldn’t talk to the press at all.”
Herbert, 60, was then dropped by the FIA prior to the 2025 season due to the “incompatibility” of his dual role.
The next race of the 2025 season is the Miami Grand Prix (2-4 May).

OSCAR PIASTRI WINS SAUDI ARABIAN GRAND PRIX, MAX VERSTAPPEN SECOND
McLaren's Oscar Piastri won the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on Sunday from Red Bull polesitter Max Verstappen to lead the world championship for the first time in his career.
McLaren's Oscar Piastri won the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on Sunday from Red Bull polesitter Max Verstappen to lead the world championship for the first time in his career.
Charles Leclerc's Ferrari completed the podium for this fifth round of the season under the floodlights at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit.
Piastri's third win this year was in large part decided at the first turn, when Verstappen picked up a five-second penalty for gaining an advantage after going off the track.
He becomes the first Australian to lead the drivers' standings since his agent, Mark Webber, 15 years ago.
"Very happy to have won, made the difference at the start. Great race.
"Max was still a bit too close for my liking!" Piastri said, after crossing the line 2.843 seconds clear of the four-time world champion.
His McLaren teammate Lando Norris, who went into the weekend leading the standings, took fourth ahead of the two Mercedes of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.

ANKARA
Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao 2-0 on Wednesday to qualify for the Spanish Super Cup final.
Gavi, a Barcelona midfielder, scored the opening goal in the 17th minute in the semifinal in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as the 20-year-old brilliantly finished near the six-yard box after a low pass from the left.
In the second half, Barcelona doubled their lead at the King Abdullah Sports City.
Gavi sent a killer ball to Lamine Yamal and the 17-year-old forward quickly entered the penalty box to beat Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Unai Simon in a one-on-one to make it 2-0 for Barcelona.
Chasing a record 15th Spanish Super Cup title, Barcelona will face either Real Madrid or Mallorca in Sunday's final.
The Real Madrid vs. Mallorca fixture will be played Thursday at the King Abdullah Sports City.

FERRARI TEEN OLIVER BEARMAN PRAISED 'INCREDIBLE' F1 DEBUT
JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia -- Ferrari's teen stand-in Oliver Bearman didn't know he would be racing in Formula One when he woke up on Friday, but by the evening his debut qualifying performance was being praised by Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc.
As Ferrari reserve driver it was Bearman, 18, who got the call shortly before Friday's practice session to replace appendicitis-stricken Carlos Sainz for the rest of the weekend.
The Englishman had been set to start the Formula 2 support race from pole position.
After an hour of track time in practice, Bearman then narrowly missed out on a place in the Q3 top-10 qualifying shootout, almost eliminating Ferrari-bound Lewis Hamilton in the process.
He will line up in 11th for Saturday evening's race, when he will become the third-youngest driver to start an F1 event.
"I honestly did not have time to get nervous," Bearman said. "I woke up this morning fully prepared for my F2 race and I got the call late in the day, just a few hours before FP3 that I would be doing it.
"Not the circumstance I would wish to be making my F1 debut. I wish the best to Carlos and I hope he recovers well but this is a great opportunity."
He added: "To make my F1 debut in red, hopefully it is a sign to come."
On paper his Ferrari had the raw pace for a stronger starting position -- Leclerc will line up from second in the other car, behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen.
But Jeddah's fast and fearsome street circuit is one of the toughest to get to grips with in such a short space of time.

JAPAN DEFEATS NORTH KOREA 2-1 TO REACH WOMEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT AT THE PARIS OLYMPICS

TOKYO (AP) — Japan defeated North Korea 2-1 on Wednesday to reach the women’s soccer tournament at the upcoming Paris Olympics. But not without a tiny bit of VAR controversy.
The first match in the two-game series to determine one of Asia’s two qualifiers ended in a 0-0 draw on Saturday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Japan had three clear standout players who helped book its tickets for Paris.
Japan won the silver medal in the 2012 Olympics but has never won gold in the women’s tournament. North Korea last competed in women’s soccer at the 2012 Olympics but has never won a medal.
“We want to move forward with the goal of winning a gold medal,” Japan coach Futoshi Ikeda said.
Ikeda coached the Japanese women in the 2023 World Cup and saw them lose in the quarterfinals to Sweden.
Hana Takahashi scored in the 26th, but it was Japanese goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita who scrambled late in the first half to stop a shot that was millimeters from crossing over the line.
Aoba Fujino put the match away with a header in the 76th to give Japan its second.

CLUB WORLD CUP SET FOR JUNE-JULY 2025, NEW INTERNATIONAL CUP 2024 - FIFA

FIFA's revamped Club World Cup planned for 2025 and set to feature 32 teams will be played from June 15 to July 13, while a new Intercontinental Cup will be played annually from next year, Gianni Infantino, the head of world soccer's governing body, said on Sunday.
FIFA had announced an expanded Club World Cup earlier this year and unanimously voted to appoint the United States as hosts for the first edition of the event.
The Council met in Jeddah in Saudi Arabia to ratify the dates for the Club World Cup and confirmed next year's Intercontinental Cup would have the UEFA Champions League winner playing a team that comes through intercontinental playoffs.
The playoffs will be played on Dec. 14, 2024, followed by the final on Dec. 18.

SAUDI ARABIA TO HOST NEXT GEN ATP FINALS FROM 2023 TO 2027

The season-ending Next Gen Finals for men's under-21 tennis players will be held in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah from 2023 to 2027 as the ATP makes its first competitive foray into the Gulf state, the men's governing body said on Thursday.
The award of the tournament marks the latest move in world sport by Saudi Arabia which has pumped massive amounts of money into golf and soccer among others in recent years, drawing some scrutiny in the process.
The hardcourt tournament, which has been played in Milan since it began in 2017, will also have its prize money increased to a record $2 million, up from $1.4 million last year.
The ATP launched a bidding process in March to evaluate host cities in several regions before finalising on the Saudi Arabian port city of Jeddah, with the King Abdullah Sports City indoor facility staging the event this year from Nov. 28-Dec. 2.
