Arsenal will be without some key players when they face Everton in the Premier League this weekend.

The Gunners will travel to Goodison Park to face the Toffees in their top flight as they look to secure another victory. Arsenal go into the game having beaten Fulham in midweek, and will be looking to close the gap on leaders Liverpool with a win over Everton.

Mikel Arteta's side are 12 points behind Liverpool in the Premier League table going into their trip to Merseyside. Arsenal can close the gap to nine points for 24 hours at least, but Arteta will have to do so with several important players unavailable.

It was confirmed this week that Gabriel Magalhaes will be sidelined for the remainder of the season after suffering a hamstring injury in the win over Fulham. Arsenal will also be without Riccardo Calafiori, who picked up a knee injury during the international break.

"Ric [Calafiori] is not fit as well because in the last week or so we lost four players, and that's obviously a big task," Arteta told reporters on Friday.

"But let's see how Ben [White] and Jurrien [Timber] are tomorrow as well and that's it. Keep playing and keep competing the way we have been."

White was not included in the squad that faced Fulham in midweek, while Timber was withdrawn in the second half with a possible fitness concern. Arteta stated that both have a chance of playing against Everton, but are not certain to be included in the trip to Goodison.

"Yeah, there's a chance," said Arteta. "The problem is that we have a few of those so we're going to have to decide this evening or tomorrow, very early in the morning which player we can play and for how long, especially."

Arsenal will also be without Kai Havertz, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Gabriel Jesus who are all sidelined with long-term injuries.

EVERTON AIMS CHEEKY DIG AT VIRGIL VAN DIJK AFTER LIVERPOOL STAR'S MERSEYSIDE DERBY JIBE

Everton had the last laugh in Wednesday's Merseyside derby against Liverpool, their last ever meeting to be played at Goodison Park before the club's move to Bramley-Moore Dock

Everton appeared to mock Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk after he labelled Wednesday's Merseyside derby their 'cup final'.

James Tarkowski scored a 98th-minute equaliser for Everton, who hosted the derby at Goodison Park for the final time, as they'll be moving to a new stadium next season. Tarkowski's goal sparked chaos on and off the pitch, with Everton fans invading the field of play after his goal to make it 2-2.

There was also a huge brawl between both sets of players in front of the away section. Four red cards were shown AFTER full-time by referee Michael Oliver, three for Liverpool and one for Everton.

The Toffees now only have six more matches left to play at Goodison before the Premier League season comes to an end. Referencing that fact on social media, Everton posted a video of their fans chanting during Wednesday night's game with the caption: "Six more 'finals' left at Goodison," adding two emojis; one face smirking and the other looking sad.

Fans have instantly drawn a connection between their post and Van Dijk's comments. "This is their cup final and they would try to do everything in their power to make it difficult for us," the Liverpool skipper told TNT Sports post-match. "It is a big boost for them but a blow for us."

Replies to Everton's post on X, formerly Twitter, included: "Hahaha, brilliant admin," and "Admin killing it again! Give that guy a raise.

Before kick-off, Liverpool fans taunted Everton with the fact they haven't lifted a trophy since winning the FA Cup in 1995. "At least an empty cabinet is easier to move," a banner read. Liverpool supporters who'd made the short journey across Stanley Park also had balloons with the numbers 30 and 1995.

 Everton won't mind the taunts now, though, as they were able to celebrate a memorable night at their famous home ground. "A special, special night and what a way to finish the last derby here," Tarkowski said. "It will be a special moment for the rest of my career and probably the biggest moment for me really.

I had an 80-year-old man grabbing me and then a five-year-old kid pulling me to the floor. There were stewards everywhere. Chaos – but what a moment it was. I've had a couple of proud moments; promotions and playing for my country, but for me this is the biggest just with everything which is happening right now, leaving this iconic stadium, probably for me it will be the biggest goal of my career.

FOREST SHOULD HAVE HAD ONE PENALTY AT EVERTON - PANEL

Anthony Taylor waved away three Nottingham Forest penalty appeals at Everton

 

 Nottingham Forest should have been awarded one penalty from their three unsuccessful appeals against Everton, an independent panel has said.

Claims for penalties after Ashley Young's challenge on Gio Reyna, his handball and then an attempted tackle on Callum Hudson-Odoi were all turned down by Anthony Taylor on the pitch, with video assistant referee Stuart Attwell not intervening.

Forest lost the Premier League game 2-0 at Goodison Park on 21 April.

Minutes after full-time the club posted on social media, alleging Attwell was a fan of relegation rivals Luton - a statement which has been seen more than 45 million times.

Forest's post said: "Three extremely poor decisions - three penalties not given - which we simply cannot accept.

"We warned the PGMOL that the VAR is a Luton fan... NFFC will now consider its options."

What did the panel say?

The Key Match Incident Panel is independent and made up of three former players or coaches, one Premier League representative and one from the Professional Game Match Officials Board, the referees' body.

It reviews the big refereeing decisions from each Premier League round of fixtures and unanimously agreed Forest should have been given a penalty when Young brought down Hudson-Odoi in the 55th minute.

"Young inherits the risk by going to ground from the wrong side and Hudson-Odoi beats him to the ball. It is a foul," the panel wrote in their decisions, seen by BBC Sport.

"It was felt unanimously that a penalty should have been awarded and VAR should have intervened on the basis that Young doesn't make any contact on the ball and that there is evidence that his contact with Hudson-Odoi has the consequence of tripping the attacker."

They also voted 5-0 that VAR should have intervened.

The panel was split 3-2 over the on-pitch decision over whether Forest should have been awarded a spot-kick when the ball hit Young's arm in the 44th minute, but all agreed VAR was correct not to intervene.

They argued it was a subjective call but "the majority considered this a dynamic situation where the arm was in a justifiable position, and with no clear action to deliberately handle the ball. In addition the close proximity from which the ball was played by the attacker was taken into account."

They also agreed, in a 5-0 decision, that Young's 24th-minute challenge on Reyna did not warrant a penalty and that VAR was correct not to step in.

The panel wrote: "The ball isn't played, there is contact by the defender on the attacker but any contact is minimal and is exaggerated by the attacker, and falls below the high threshold for a penalty."

 What is the background?

Forest are expected to face charges from the Premier League and Football Association following their social media post.

Last week the FA formally asked for observations from Forest, boss Nuno Espirito Santo, defender Neco Williams and Mark Clattenburg, the club's referee analysist, following their comments.

The Premier League is also investigating, saying it was "never appropriate to improperly question the integrity of match officials".

Forest have been allowed to listen to the audio recording of the officials' discussions after the incidents.

It follows Liverpool’s similar request when Luis Diaz’s goal was incorrectly disallowed in their 2-1 defeat at Tottenham in September.

Forest are one point above the Premier League's bottom three after Sunday's 2-0 defeat by Manchester City and travel to relegated Sheffield United on Saturday.

EVERTON OVERCOME BRENTFORD TO CONFIRM PREMIER LEAGUE SURVIVAL

Everton confirmed their Premier League survival with a win over Brentford at Goodison Park.

 Idrissa Gueye's strike at the hour mark secured Everton a 1-0 win over Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday, confirming the club's survival from relegation.

The win took 15th-placed Everton to 36 points from 35 matches, 11 ahead of 18th-placed Luton Town who also have three games left to play after losing 2-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier in the day.

Brentford, whose survival was also confirmed with Luton's loss, fell to 16th with 35 points.

"Incredibly pleased and proud. They're a group of players who have had knocks all season," Everton manager Sean Dyche told the BBC. "They've had a massive week. There's a lot of pressure and intensity on the week and can you do it again?"

The hosts broke the deadlock when Jack Harrison's cross from the right reached Jarrad Branthwaite near the six-yard box, who was dispossessed by Nathan Collins. But the ball rolled towards Gueye who ran up and made no mistake with his right footed finish.

Everton had nearly led when Ben Godfrey's cross from inside the box was almost met in front of goal by Youssef Chermiti in the sixth minute, but the forward fell inches short of making the finish.

Brentford also came close in the 19th minute when Vitaly Janelt found Mathias Jensen just outside the six-yard box, but Branthwaite's diving block foiled his attempt.

But the best chance of the half fell to Everton's Abdoulaye Doucouré, who had space inside the box to put away Chermiti's pass but sent it wide just before the break.

The woodwork denied Everton when Dwight McNeil's brilliant left footed effort from outside the box came off the crossbar, but fans in Goodison Park breathed a collective sigh of relief when Gueye scored minutes later.

Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford punched out Keane Lewis-Potter's attempt from inside the box in the 76th minute, as the hosts held on through the nervy final minutes to ensure three points.

"Perfect week. Three wins, three clean sheets," Pickford said. "A lot of pressure the last two years and the deductions this year. The lads dug in massively."

Everton visit Luton on Friday, a day before Brentford host Fulham.
