MAN UTD AGREE £70 CARLOS BALEBA DEAL WITH BRIGHTON AS MIDFIELDER GOES FOR MEDICAL

Manchester United have taken a massive step toward completing their summer rebuild after reaching an agreement with Brighton & Hove Albion for Carlos Baleba. The highly-rated midfielder is now expected to travel for a medical as Michael Carrick looks to bolster his engine room following a series of high-profile departures and injuries.
Red Devils land primary midfield target
According to The Athletic, Manchester United have successfully negotiated a deal for Brighton star Baleba, with the total package for the Cameroon international set to reach £70 million. The two Premier League clubs reached a definitive breakthrough in talks after weeks of speculation surrounding the 22-year-old's future, with United paying a guaranteed fixed fee of £65m alongside £5m in add-ons. The midfielder is expected to travel tonight ahead of a scheduled medical on Saturday.
Manchester United continue to stay active in the summer transfer window as they prepare for their return to the Champions League. The Red Devils have already bolstered Carrick's squad with the acquisitions of Andrey Santos from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, and goalkeeper Karl Darlow from Leeds United.

Addressing a crisis in the engine room
The pursuit of Baleba comes at a pivotal moment for United, whose central midfield options have been thinned by summer departures and key injuries. With Casemiro departing on a free transfer and Manuel Ugarte sidelined by a ligament injury suffered at the World Cup, reinforcing the middle of the pitch became a top priority for the club's recruitment team.
Despite the excitement surrounding his arrival, Baleba is working his way back to full fitness after a pre-season setback. The Cameroon international is currently sidelined with an ankle ligament injury sustained during the summer break, which kept him out of Brighton's goalless draw against Tromso in the first leg of their Conference League qualifier on Thursday.
Data-driven pursuit yields results
United's interest in the former Lille midfielder is far from a sudden development, with the club's recruitment team keeping close tabs on his progress for several seasons. Old Trafford scouts monitored Baleba extensively throughout the 2025-26 campaign, having already explored a potential deal for the Cameroonian last summer.
Baleba's ascent to the upper echelons of English football has been swift since arriving from Ligue 1. After joining Brighton from Lille in the summer of 2023, the midfielder made 112 appearances for the Seagulls, though he was limited to 23 Premier League starts last season.

Brighton's summer exodus continues
Baleba will become the latest high-profile departure from Brighton this summer, following the exits of Jan Paul van Hecke to Tottenham Hotspur, Danny Welbeck to Chelsea, and Diego Coppola to Paris FC.
Brighton kick off their new Premier League campaign by hosting Aston Villa on Sunday, while Manchester United travel to face newly-promoted Hull City tomorrow, Saturday.

Chelsea have signed England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa on a contract until 2033, both Premier League clubs said on Tuesday, with British media reporting the deal was worth £117m (R2.58bn), making him the most expensive British player.
Neither club disclosed financial details, but Sky Sports reported the package surpassed the reported fee of up to £116m Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for midfielder Elliot Anderson earlier this month.
Chelsea’s previous record signing was Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo, who joined from Brighton & Hove Albion for £115m in 2023.
“I’m so excited,” said Rogers in a club statement. “For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid.

Rogers, who can play on the wing or as an attacking midfielder, leaves Villa after two years, having helped them win the Europa League in May. He scored in the 3-0 final victory over Freiburg as Villa claimed their first major European trophy since 1982.
The 23-year-old scored 31 goals in 125 appearances for Villa after joining from Middlesbrough in 2024, earning his England debut later that year.
Rogers featured in seven of England’s eight matches as they finished third at the World Cup and enjoyed his most prolific domestic campaign last season, scoring 10 Premier League goals.
Chelsea, who finished 10th in the Premier League last season, begin their league campaign away to Fulham on August 24.

ASTON VILLA 1-0 BRIGHTON: LATE OWN GOAL THE DIFFERENCE AS MILNER MAKES PREMIER LEAGUE HISTORY
Aston Villa ended their mini-skid with a win on a day former player James Milner made Premier League history for Brighton & Hove Albion in a 1-0 affair at Villa Park on Wednesday.

Milner came off the bench in the first half for Carlos Baleba, making his 653rd Premier League appearance to tie Gareth Barry for the most appearances in the history of England’s top division.
The veteran midfielder was solid against his former team, who got the last laugh when Tyrone Mings headed a corner kick off Tyler Hinshelwood and past Bart Verbruggen late in the contest.
Villa stay three points behind second-place Man City, six points back of leaders Arsenal.
Brighton continue to slump and remain 14th with 31 points.
Villa find a way on fumes against punchless visitors
This was anything but pretty for Unai Emery’s men, who may all be hoping for a rest come Saturday in the FA Cup. The Hinshelwood own goal was well-celebrated but also fitting as a decider because almost everyone Unai Emery plugged into this front three struggled to affect the game. Tammy Abraham was bright off the bench but this win was also an indictment on Brighton’s ice-cold front three. Fabian Hurzeler’s men have lost three-of-four and boast just a single Premier League win since the calendar hit December. For those scoring at home, the Seagulls are 1W-6D-6L in that run with the lone win coming against 19th-place Burnley. We’re pretty sure no one’s truly impressed with Wednesday’s result.
What’s next?
Villa host Newcastle United in the FA Cup at 12:45pm ET Saturday, then welcome Leeds to Villa Park a week later in the league.
Brighton are off to Liverpool for a 3pm Saturday date in the FA Cup, then visit Brentford the following Saturday.

Aston Villa have gone two games without a win but they can still hang in the title race with a win against struggling Brighton on Wednesday.
Unai Emery’s side took the lead at Bournemouth on Saturday but drew 1-1 as injuries have hit Villa hard at precisely the moment they looked like challenging Arsenal and City for the title. Still, they look set for a top four finish if they can get back on track quickly and their new signings can settle in.
Brighton lost 1-0 at home to bitter rivals Crystal Palace on Sunday and some of the Seagulls faithful have turned on young manager Fabian Hurzeler. Brighton have won just once in their last 12 league games and with the players they have it’s clear they should have more points on the board.
Aston Villa team news, focus
Morgan Rogers is their main star with John McGinn, Youri Tielemans and Boubacar Kamara all missing through injury. He scored a beauty at the weekend and keeps on delivering. Villa need new signings Abraham and Luiz (both re-signing for Villa) and returning loanee Leon Bailey to deliver big performances straight away as Emery will rotate the lineup.
Brighton team news, focus
Adam Webster, Solly March, Stefanos Tzimas, Yasin Ayari and Mats Wieffer are out injured, while center back Jan Paul van Hecke remains a doubt. Brighton have so many wonderful attacking players but Hurzeler can’t seem to find a way to get them all in the team at the same time and there’s a real lack of fluidity and confidence in attack.

Chelsea woke up bright and early today, and took new signing João Pedro out to the beach in Miami to take some pictures for the official announcement of his signing. How scenic!
The 23-year-old Brazil international has thus completed his transfer from Brighton & Hove Albion in rather expeditious fashion, arriving in time to be registered for Friday’s Club World Cup quarterfinal against Palmeiras, even. He’s likely to make his debut then for his first minutes in his 8-year contract (eight!).
(Incidentally, should we advance, we could face his boyhood club, Fluminense in the semifinals.)
Chelsea have reportedly given Brighton a cool £55m to make this transfer happen, with a further £5m in potential add-ons and bonuses.
“Everyone knows this is a big club with a great history. They had brilliant players in the past and have brilliant players now. So I am excited to join and you know when you are a Chelsea player you must think one thing — win.”

RANGERS TAKEOVER: HOW A $6BILLION NFL FRANCHISE COULD BE SET TO TRANSFORM IBROX CLUB
Talks between Rangers and 49ers at ‘advanced stage’
Rangers are the subject of a multi-million pound takeover bid by American football side the San Francisco 49ers, it has been claimed.
Reports state that the Ibrox side are in advanced talks with potential investors over a deal that would see the $6billion NFL franchise become the largest single shareholder in the club.
Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe, who is also head of 49ers Enterprises, the investment arm of the San Francisco 49ers, is said to be heading up the consortium along with another unnamed US businessman.

Marathe, listed by Forbes as having a personal worth of around £4.7billion, was at the forefront of the deal that saw 49ers Enterprises take ownership of Leeds United in 2023. It now appears that the group is looking to branch out into Scottish football.
A similar deal was struck last year after the Scottish FA changed its rules on dual ownership to allow Bill Foley's Black Knight consortium - who own Bournemouth - to buy a 25 per cent stake in Hibs.
Hearts are also in talks with Brighton owner Tony Bloom over a possible investment in return for a minority shareholding having already linked up with his recruitment firm Jamestown Analytics.
Rangers have fallen significantly behind Celtic both on and off the pitch in recent years with the financial gulf between the two clubs growing ever wider. Celtic, who recently posted a £43.9million pre-tax profit for the six months to December 31, 2024, broke their transfer record twice last summer while Rangers embarked on squad rebuild driven by the need to reduce the wage bill after posting a £17m loss last year.
However, if an agreement can be reached between Rangers and 49ers Enterprises before the end of the season it could open the door to a major cash injection ahead of the summer transfer window which would allow for some much-needed investment in the first-team playing squad. Rangers would also gain access to data-driven recruitment technology and new commercial opportunities in the US.

Any takeover would require shareholder approval while Rangers complex ownership structure would make any deal complicated with Dave King, the largest single shareholder, owning 13 per cent, Douglas Park 12 per cent and various other directors owning 10 per cent or less.
Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson gave his reaction to the news on the Go Radio Football Show.
"It will be interesting to see if anything comes from it," he said. "That is one thing about the new chairman and chief executive. They have to bring external investment into the club. It has been clear that has been needed. Over the coming months hopefully that is the case."
Asked if existing shareholders could be convinced to sell, Ferguson added: "Well you want what is best for the club. And if somebody is coming in and willing to pay what the shares are valued at or what they are worth then I would imagine the shareholders would do a deal. It is not just a case of coming in and buying the shares.
"These new shareholders, if that is going to be what is happening, are going to invest more money into the club. That is certainly what is needed. Look, I wouldn't get too excited about it just now but it is good to see that things are happening in the background.
"It is clear as day that there has to be fresh investment coming in. I think that is one of the biggest jobs of the new chairman and chief executive. To make sure that is the case going forward."

CHELSEA'S COLE PALMER SCORES RECORD FOUR FIRST-HALF GOALS
Cole Palmer became the first player to score four goals in the first half of a Premier League match as the forward repeatedly found the back of the net in Chelsea's extraordinary game against Brighton at on Saturday.
The 22-year-old scored four times in a devastating 20-minute spell against the south coast club as Chelsea bounced back from Georginio Rutter's opener to lead 4-2 at half time.
Palmer scored in the 21st, 28th, 31st and 41st minutes.

He previously scored four goals in a single match for Chelsea last season in a 6-0 win over Everton in April.
Palmer has become the fourth player -- alongside Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink -- to score three Premier League hat tricks for Chelsea.
The game against Brighton was only Palmer's 39th league appearance for Chelsea after joining from Manchester City in 2023.
