Premier League referee Andy Madley has been confirmed to officiate Nottingham Forest vs Arsenal on Wednesday night following the VAR controversy in Manchester United's draw with Everton.

The Red Devils came from 2-0 down to 2-2 on Saturday thanks to second-half goals from Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte. However, Everton were denied a late penalty with Ashley Young going down inside the box.

After Andre Onana parried a shot, the ex-United star fell to the floor after minimal contact from Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt. Madley initially awarded a penalty to the home side but VAR intervened to change the decision.

Matt Donohue, who was the VAR, suggested that Madley watched the incident on the on-field screen before the referee overturned the decision and no penalty was awarded. After the game, Everton boss David Moyes slammed the decision, claiming De Ligt pulled Young's shirt.

"I can’t understand. He (De Ligt) pulled his jersey," said Moyes. "I just thought the referee made the correct decision at the time and he should stick with it. I think everybody who watches football we're all looking forward to seeing a referee saying 'no, no I'm sticking with it'.

"If it's absolutely clear and obvious that’s what we’ve got VAR for, but I didn't think it needed to get involved. It’s frustrating. It looked to me like the shirt pull needed to be given. You shouldn't be getting away with pulling jerseys."

With Premier League action returning in mid-week, both Madley and Donohue have been handed games. Madley will referee the huge game at the City Ground between Forest and Arsenal on Wednesday while Donohue will oversee VAR on Tuesday for Brighton vs Bournemouth.

Derek Eaton, who was assistant VAR at Goodison Park, will join Paul Tierney in the VAR booth at Stockley Park for Wolves vs Fulham at Molineux. Darren England will referee United's clash with Ipswich Town on Wednesday.

UEFA BANS TWO POLISH REFEREES FOR 'TERRIBLE MISTAKE'

Tomasz Musial and Bartosz Frankowski were charged by Uefa with bringing the game into disrepute

Two referees have been banned from officiating in Uefa matches until June 2025 after a bizarre incident on the morning of a Champions League qualifier between Rangers and Dynamo Kyiv.

Bartosz Frankowski and Tomasz Musial were replaced as VAR officials before the third qualifying round match in Lublin, Poland on 6 August after reports of "improper behaviour".

Polish media reports alleged the pair had been drinking and were stopped by police with another man in the early hours having moved a road sign, with Frankowski later confirming details of the incident in an interview.

Uefa's control, ethics and disciplinary body said on Friday the Polish duo were banned for violating "basic rules of decent conduct" and for bringing the sport and Uefa into disrepute.

A police spokesman said at the time that the men had been caught on CCTV cameras carrying the sign and were detained.

Superintendent Kamil Golebiowski said, according to Polish news outlet TVP World, that the men were breathalysed and had alcohol in their systems and were later fined.

Frankowski and Musial released statements of apology, with both saying that they co-operated with the police without aggression while Musial described the incident as "irresponsible and unprofessional".

Musial added: "I feel very sorry and - in purely human terms - stupid, because I know that my unfortunate behaviour will cast a shadow over many years of hard work.

"I am aware of the consequences that await me, but I hope that I will be able to rehabilitate myself and rebuild your trust."

Frankowski said: "Throughout my 22 years of refereeing I have tried to discharge my duties professionally and avoid any blemishes on my image.

"I made a terrible mistake that I deeply regret. I will accept the consequences with humility, but at the same time I would like to hope that I will be able to rebuild your trust someday."

Frankowski and Musial were intended to be the video assistant referee (VAR) and VAR assistant for the Champions League qualifier but were replaced by other officials from the Polish Football Association.

The pair were also suspended by the Polish FA in August.

The match was drawn 1-1. Rangers suffered a 2-0 defeat at home the following week that meant Dynamo won on aggregate.

JUVENTUS FIRES COACH MASSIMILLIANO ALLEGRI FOR HIS OUTBURST TOWARDS THE REFS IN THE ITALIAN CUP

 TURIN, Italy (AP) — Juventus fired coach Massimiliano Allegri on Friday for his ugly outburst toward the referees in the Italian Cup final.

Juventus has two games left in Serie A but Allegri was due to miss them following a two-game suspension for his Cup final behavior on Wednesday.

Allegri lost his cool in stoppage time when he grew angry at a decision, ripped off his jacket and earned a red card for sarcastically applauding the referee. Juventus beat Atalanta 1-0.

Juventus said in a statement that Allegri’s behavior was not in line with its "values.”

“The firing follows certain behaviors during and after the Italian Cup final that the club deemed incompatible with the values of Juventus, and the behavior that those who represent it should have,” the statement said.

Aside from the suspension, he was also fined 5,000 euros ($5,400) by the Serie A league judge. Allegri “acted aggressively” and used insulting language and gestures toward the referees, the judge reported.

Allegri was also reportedly aggressive toward journalists after the match.

Away from the Italian Cup, Juventus has had a disappointing season. It has fallen to fourth place in Serie A and was banned from European competition due to a false accounting case.

Allegri was in his second stint at Juventus, having rejoined the club in July 2021. He was more successful in his first term at the Bianconeri, winning five straight Serie A titles from 2015-19. His only trophy since returning was the Italian Cup won this week, which has become his final match with the team.

Juventus did not immediately announce a replacement for Allegri. There has been speculation that the club wants to hire Thiago Motta from Bologna for next season, which may have led to a rift between Allegri and the club.
