WEMBANYAMA ERA BEGINS AS SPURS DRAFT FRENCH PHENOM FIRST OVERALL

Victor Wembanyama was selected first overall by the San Antonio Spurs at the NBA Draft in New York on Thursday, making the player seen as a once-in-a-generation talent the highest-drafted French player in league history.
The 19-year-old 'Wemby' comes into the league with a buzz that has not been seen since LeBron James, the league's all-time leading scorer, was drafted out of high school 20 years ago.
Wembanyama cried with joy after NBA Commissioner Adam Silver called his name at Barclays Center.

When it comes to the 2023 NBA Draft, there is Victor Wembanyama and then there is everyone else.
Wembanyama is considered a slam dunk to be taken first overall in Thursday's NBA Draft by a San Antonio Spurs team that would be counting on the French basketball phenom to restore the franchise's winning culture.
A so-called generational talent who can quickly change the trajectory of a franchise, Wembanyama is the most anticipated and hyped NBA Draft prospect since LeBron James, the league's all-time leading scorer, in 2003.

Think back to this time last year, when virtually everyone assumed Jabari Smith Jr. was a lock to go No. 1. Then the whispers started just prior to draft night about a sudden change and, boom, Paolo Banchero became the Orlando Magic's top pick.
Safe to say, there will be no such switcheroo come next Thursday night, when the San Antonio Spurs will assuredly fulfill Victor Wembanyama's destiny as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft. However, there will be intrigue immediately afterward, when the Charlotte Hornets will have to decide between Scoot Henderson, long considered the next-best thing to Wembanyama in this draft, and Brandon Miller, whose incredible college season put him in the mix at No. 2.
