Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has branded Alejandro Garnacho’s attitude during his time at Old Trafford a "disgrace", stating that selling the player was the best decision the club could have made.

The 21-year-old departed for Chelsea last summer in a £40m deal after falling out of favour under then-head coach Ruben Amorim, and has since struggled to make an impact at his new club.

Garnacho recently faced his former side, failing to impress as United secured a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge on Saturday night. Following the match, social media activity from his former teammates seemed to support Butt's claims.

United defender Luke Shaw shared an image on Instagram of him pushing Garnacho, prompting Bruno Fernandes to respond with a GIF reading “that’s a violation”, while Joshua Zirkzee commented "nice one mate".

Speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, Butt was unequivocal about the young forward.

"The best thing for me that Manchester United did was sell him because, forget his ability, I don’t think he’s that great anyway," he stated. "However, his attitude for me was a disgrace when he was at United.

“That’s why that happens when people post things like that (Shaw on Instagram). If you are in a changing room and you leave and completely disrespect your team-mates and football club."

Butt, who served as Manchester United’s head of academy from 2016 to 2019 and then head of first team development until 2021, reflected on how such behaviour would have been disciplined in his playing days.

"He’d have been taken out every single day in training. He’d have been put in his place very quickly with the likes of the players we got brought up with. Swatted down, taken out," he explained.

"He would’ve been treated really badly if he behaved like that, but he’d have learnt from it and got better."

The former treble winner elaborated on his experiences with Garnacho, suggesting the player became too big for his boots too quickly.

"Garnacho was always a bit standoffish. He had a high opinion of himself," Butt revealed. "I thought he had an edge about him and when he went into Manchester United’s first team, and I will say what I think because I was there looking at it, he got above his station way too quick."

He added: "He got a superstar status way too quick... but he got superstar status so quickly and then scored the bicycle-kick – which was a phenomenal goal – and then it went like that.

“Someone in that football club should have been swatting him down. They might have been and he’s just ignored them."

Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant manager Rene Meulensteen has questioned a Manchester United transfer decision and revealed his doubts over Alejandro Garnacho.

Garnacho attracted criticism for his performance in United’s Premier League defeat to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.

Meulensteen admits he has ‘never been sold’ on Garnacho, which perhaps explains why Manchester United considered moving him on during the January transfer window.

Garnacho was heavily linked with a move to Premier League rivals Chelsea but ended up staying at Old Trafford, where he has been since 2022.

At one point Garnacho was one of the most exciting and influential players in the Manchester United dressing room but he has endured a poor season, scoring four goals in the league.

Garnacho is not the only winger struggling at United – Marcus Rashford and Antony both underwhelmed before securing loan moves to Aston Villa and Real Betis respectively in January.

Given Manchester United’s problems on the flanks, Meulensteen has questioned the decision to sell Antony Elanga to Nottingham Forest.

Elanga showed promise at United – making 55 first-team appearances – but was sold to Forest in the summer of 2023 for £15m.

The Sweden international is thriving at the City Ground, helping Forest climb into the Champions League spots and reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

It was Elanga’s early, counter-attacking goal that gave Forest a narrow win over Manchester United as the Red Devils’ recent revival came to an abrupt halt.

‘I’ve never been sold on Alejandro Garnacho to be fairly honest,’ Meulensteen told Poker Firma. ‘I think there’s a personality and character issue at times.

‘Anthony Elanga on the other hand, his performance last night is exactly what you want to expect from a Manchester United winger – strong, direct, powerful, full of confidence and taking players on.

‘I always thought Elanga showed those glimpses when he was playing for Man United, but the club closed the door on him and his career has restarted at a different club.

‘You really have to question the decision-making process to let players like him go, because there’s been a few who have slipped through the fingers.’

Ex-Premier League star Frank Leboeuf also took aim at Garnacho following Manchester United’s disappointing 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest.

‘Man United are 20 points behind Forest so that tells you a lot about the two teams,’ he said on ESPN. ‘Forest were very solid, as they have been all season.

‘It was a really good counter-attacking goal. It was what we expected, United had the ball but were very slow, there was nothing creative at all.

‘I want to talk about Garnacho. He has everything to become a fantastic player but he has to realise he doesn’t play alone.

‘He has so many chances to give the ball to his teammates but he shoots and hits the stands behind the goal, it was awful.

‘It gets on your nerves because he doesn’t think about giving the ball to his teammates. Sometimes you need to be selfish but not every time.

‘I see nothing from Man United right now.’

Old Trafford boss Ruben Amorim felt his team deserved at least a point from their clash against Forest.

Man Utd will look to sell Alejandro Garnacho in the summer transfer window in order to fund a move for Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde, according to reports.

The Red Devils are currently 13th in the Premier League table as they continue their terrible form this season with a crucial clash against 14th-placed Tottenham coming up on Sunday.

Man Utd have failed to improve under new boss Ruben Amorim after the Portuguese coach replaced Erik ten Hag in November with the Red Devils winning just four of their 14 Premier League matches during his tenure.

The Red Devils, who had Erik ten Hag in charge at the time, spent around £180m on new signings in the summer transfer window with Joshua Zirkzee, Noussair Mazraoui, Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Manuel Ugarte arriving.

However, that recruitment drive negatively impacted the January transfer window with new manager Amorim afforded one new player in Patrick Dorgu from Lens.

Man Utd are reportedly close to their Premier League profit and sustainability (PSR) limit with the Red Devils even considering sales of young players like Kobbie Mainoo and Garnacho to balance the books.

And now Spanish publication Fichajes claims that Man Utd ‘have a plan to sign a Barcelona star’ in the summer transfer window as they look to give Amorim more balance to his squad.

It is understood that Man Utd ‘want to sell’ Garnacho ‘to cover the cost of a blockbuster signing’ in the form of Barcelona left-back Balde.

The Red Devils are ‘planning an ambitious strategy to strengthen their squad in the upcoming summer transfer market’ with the Spain international becoming ‘a priority target’.

Man Utd are ‘willing to part’ with Argentina international Garnacho ‘whose sale could provide the necessary funds to complete the arrival of the left-back from FC Barcelona’.

Garnacho has proved effective in spells off the bench but is struggling to find a long-term place in Amorim’s starting XI as the Man Utd boss could look to better suited players for his system and style of play.

It is claimed that Amorim ‘highly values his impact on the team and his performance in key moments’ but that ‘United’s delicate financial situation and the need to strengthen the defence could mean the Argentine is the sacrificial piece in the summer’.

On Balde, Amorim ‘believes that his incorporation would strengthen the left wing, where the team is still looking for solutions despite the recent arrival of Patrick Dorgu’.

Barcelona ‘will not let him go easily’ with Balde valued at around €50m by the Catalan giants, while a Garnacho sale shouldn’t be a problem after January interest from both Napoli and Chelsea.

Chelsea are reportedly considering launching a £50million bid for Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho.

The 20-year-old is on the Blues’ radar as well as receiving interest from Serie A outfit Napoli. However, the Italian club are now set to switch their attention to Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi after struggling to match United’s valuation of the winger.

But Chelsea are not to be deterred and are reportedly set to head the race of the Argentine who would cost around £50m. It’s believed that Chelsea’s position is strengthened by Garnacho’s desire to remain in the Premier League.

According to Sky Sports, the relationship between the two clubs is very good at the highest levels, with the Blues signing wantaway Jadon Sancho from United in the summer on an initial loan with an obligation fee.

Chelsea are said to have been notified of Napoli’s discussions with United for Garnacho with the Naples side holding meetings with United’s director of football negotiations Matt Hargreaves this week.

A drop in valuation from United’s original asking price has reportedly occurred, with the Old Trafford club initially asking for a package in excess of £60m (€75m), but will now settle for no less than £55m (€65m).

Even still, the figure remains too high for Napoli, who don’t want to exceed £46.5m (€55m) as they sought a replacement for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia after he joined PSG for €70m (£59m) plus add-ons earlier this month.

Garnacho has expressed his concerns regarding his role at United in Ruben Amorim’s system. Under the Portuguese, United have operated in a 3-4-2-1 formation, which doesn’t utilise traditional wingers.

The Argentine has been left out of the starting line-up in place of Amad Diallo and Bruno Fernandes in recent weeks but starts United’s Europa League game against Rangers on Thursday night.
