Former Australian cricketers have described Australia’s stunning nine-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in the first Test in Darwin as an embarrassing moment for the team, with calls for changes to the batting line-up.

Bangladesh produced one of the biggest upsets in recent Test cricket on Sunday, beating Australia by nine wickets to register their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes the defeat highlights the need for Australia to begin regenerating its Test side, something he had called for at the end of last summer.

“This ends up being a very embarrassing defeat. I think it’s inevitable they have to make change,” Ponting said.

“I was on the record at the end of last summer thinking that this was the ideal time to start to regenerate this team because the performances from some of the players …”

Ponting admitted he has traditionally been reluctant to call for changes to a successful team but felt there was enough evidence to suggest Australia needed to begin rebuilding.

“I’m the last one who wants to make change. As a captain or as a player, I wanted to keep the group together,” he said.

“It has to get to a bad point before I start saying you ought to leave somebody out. But there had been enough evidence for me coming here to suggest that they weren’t going to lose anything, or much at all, by starting that regeneration – by maybe bringing in another opener, by maybe bringing in someone at No. 3.”

Ponting was also surprised by the quality of Bangladesh’s performance, particularly the way their pace attack, spin bowling and batting stood up to Australia.

“I honestly didn’t expect Bangladesh to play cricket this well. The Bangladesh team genuinely shocked me,” Ponting said.

“The way they performed with their pace attack, spin bowling and batting was absolutely outstanding. They dominated Australia in every department and deservedly won the match.

“This is truly a historic and incredible moment for Bangladesh cricket. Their pace attack is genuinely one of the best. Just absolutely brilliant.”

Dominated key phases

Bangladesh’s victory was not simply the result of Australia’s mistakes. The visitors consistently put the hosts under pressure and dominated key phases of the match with both bat and ball.

Former Australia opener Matthew Hayden was equally stunned by the result and described it as an embarrassing moment for Australian cricket.

“I never expected this kind of performance from Australia. It’s a very embarrassing moment for Australian cricket. Full credit to Bangladesh – they played excellent cricket,” Hayden said.

Changes evident

Former Australia batter Mark Waugh believes changes could now be made to the team, with Jake Weatherald among those under pressure.

“I think Weatherald’s the one under the most pressure, and it wouldn’t surprise me if there were two changes,” Waugh said on Kayo Sports.

“I just think with the South Africa Test series after that, it’d be nice to give someone a Test match before South Africa if you’re going to change the batting order.

“I think you’ve got Inglis, Renshaw, McSweeney. I think they’re the next three batsmen.

“Renshaw, I know, hasn’t been picked in recent times, but he was picked as an opener originally. I think he’s playing pretty well at the moment.”

Former Australia opener David Warner also suggested the batting order could require another reshuffle if the current combination fails to deliver.

“If things don’t pan out down the middle, and Head might have to reshuffle back down there, you have to start all over again,” Warner said.

The defeat has therefore raised serious questions over Australia’s Test combination, with former players increasingly calling for a fresh approach after Bangladesh exposed weaknesses across the hosts’ batting and bowling departments.

Brendon McCullum has left his role as England’s Test head coach but will remain in charge of the white-ball set-up.

McCullum has paid the price for a poor run of red-ball form with a 4-1 defeat in last winter’s Ashes followed by a 2-1 home loss to New Zealand last month, which occurred against the backdrop of another off-the-field incident under the watch of the Kiwi coach.

Ben Stokes announced his international retirement midway through defeat at Trent Bridge, and that will prove the final Test of McCullum’s England red-ball tenure.

It started in extraordinary fashion in 2022 with ‘Bazball’ taking the cricket world by storm. England’s bold and fresh attack-minded approach under McCullum and Stokes led to 3-0 series wins over New Zealand and in Pakistan, where 500 runs were scored in one day, before a thrilling 2-2 home Ashes in 2023, but the trajectory soon changed.

A 4-1 thumping in India two years ago exposed England’s stubborn and at times naive mantra and along with multiple disciplinary issues, McCullum has lost his Test role months after the overseas Ashes were lost in 11 days during an abject tour of Australia.

It leaves England in need of a new head coach and captain for red-ball cricket.

Richard Gould, the England and Wales Cricket Board’s chief executive officer, said: “Brendon breathed new life into England men’s Test team during an exciting period which saw some amazing victories and we’re grateful for all he has given to the role.

“We now believe that the time is right to make a change for the Test team as we target victory in the Ashes next summer.”

Rob Key had faced scrutiny after a 4-1 loss to Australia but while Stokes and now McCullum have left their roles, he believes the red-ball set-up are “poised to achieve great things” on the foundations set by two figures which have left a mark on Test cricket.

“Some of England’s most memorable moments in recent history have occurred under Brendon’s leadership of the Test team,” Key said.

“It’s been an absolute privilege to watch him shape the mentality of the team, to one the players have loved and see him develop a new generation of talent who will be at the heart of England men’s teams for years to come.

“He leaves the Test team well-set and poised to achieve great things.”

This news occurred the day after England’s T20 team thrashed India by a 56-run margin at Ageas Bowl to seal a 4-0 Vitality Series win under McCullum.

McCullum, who took on the white-ball role in 2024 and will remain in charge of the one-day set-up, won 25 of his 44 Tests and said that while he was “gutted” to leave the Test role, he “respects” the decision to make a change.

“I’ve absolutely loved coaching the Test side and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together. There’ve been some unbelievable highs and a few tough days along the way, but that’s all part of taking on a challenge like this,” he said.

“It’s been a privilege and an honour, and I’m grateful. Grateful to the players, the staff and the fans who supported us on the journey.

“Of course I’m gutted not to be continuing, but I respect the decision. My focus now is on giving everything I’ve got to the white-ball teams and helping England keep moving forward.

“I wish the Test team nothing but success. There’s a hell of a lot of talent in that dressing room and they’re a special bunch of lads.

“I’ll always be backing the boys, with a smile on my face, and hoping they keep taking the game on. I know they’ll continue to make people proud.”

Former Australia captains Justin Langer and Ricky Ponting have both been touted for as possible England coaches in the past, while a second stint at the helm for Zimbabwean Andy Flower would also be a popular option.

Flower previously served between 2009 and 2014, and oversaw three successful Ashes campaigns – including their last away success in 2010-11. Domestically, Surrey’s three-time County Championship winner Gareth Barry and Gloucestershire’s highly rated Richard Dawson are well thought of.

Andrew Flintoff has also been spoken of as a future England coach by Key, who is a close friend, and he is effectively an internal candidate due to his role in charge of the England Lions setup. Whether he has the experience to oversee a rebuild of the Test regime is less clear.

ENGLAND CREATE TEST HISTORY AS MCC RELEASE STATEMENT ABOUT DANGEROUS LORD'S PITCH

 

England and New Zealand created a new piece of Test history at Lord's during the first of their three-match series.

As the home of cricket celebrated its 150th Test, there were a combined 24 dismissals via bowled and LBWs in English Test history.

It was also the second-shortest Test match ever held at Lord's by the number of overs.

And after the Test, the MCC have issued a statement in which they apologised for the pitch's condition.

166 overs were bowled across three days and a bit, which works out as fewer than two full days of cricket.

And of all Tests to be played with all 40 wickets being taken, this was the third-shortest, with the other two being in 1888 and 1907.

Only two players scored 50s, and they were both English.

In the first innings, Harry Brook scored 56 as England made just 140.

But it proved to be equally difficult for the Black Caps to bat as well as they made just 113.

And Emilio Gay on his Test debut scored 57 to give England a big lead and a difficult target for New Zealand to chase, which they couldn't.

The visitors needed 254 to win and were bowled out for just 138, with bowlers well on top.

There wasn't a single over of spin bowled as the seamers totally dominated due to a friendly pitch and overhead conditions.

Ahead of the Test, the Lord's ground staff made a conscious effort to create a livelier pitch after years of slow ones at the home of cricket.

There was even a new method used of steaming, which is something that happens at Wimbledon, but it was too much in the end.

In a statement from the MCC, they said: "We recognise that the pitch for this Test has shown more variable bounce than we would have wanted.

"We hold ourselves to the highest standards and are naturally frustrated when a surface falls short of those expectations.

“MCC invests significantly each year in the preparation of the Main Square at Lord’s, as well as in research, technology and expertise aimed at producing pitches that provide a fair and consistent contest between bat and ball.

"The unusually hot and dry weather during May, followed by wetter conditions in the lead-up to the match, presented a number of challenges in preparing the pitch.

“However, we fully recognise the need to act quickly. We will remain fully focused on applying all aspects of pitch development and improvement as outlined in our recently published MCC Cricket Strategy 2026-29.”

And speaking on talkSPORT's exclusive international commentary, ex-New Zealand star Jeremy Coney wasn't happy with the pitch.

He said: "No spinner has bowled a ball in this Test match and that was because of the movement up and down, variable bounce and seam movement.

"It was hard batting conditions and no one was really able to conqueror it.

"It worked out as a wicket every four overs, and of the 20 New Zealand lost, 14 of them were either LBW or bowled."

Speaking about it later on in the broadcast, he said: "The groundstaff aren't trying to produce a bad pitch.

"But if you are going to use a new method, test it out somewhere else first.

"Whatever they did, the result is unfortunate. It has produced a lopsided game.

"It was weighted too heavily on one side.

"No one wants to see weighted too heavily on the batting side either."

And England legend Steve Harmison also felt it was too favourable to the bowlers.

He also had his say after Tom Latham's speech.

"Tom has decided not to say anything there, but the head coach should come out.

"New Zealand's head coach should come out strong because they've got to condemn this pitch.

"This is one of the most iconic cricket grounds in the world, and year upon year, we seem to be getting a poor pitch.

"We have to do something about it, and the only way we can do something about is to talk about it in the right way.

"It has been sub-standard, and you have to call it as it is.

"The pitch was poor last year, and this year, it was actually a danger to the players, and that is the final straw."

Big positive

England needed to win, and they did, and the return of Robinson from the cold was huge.

The Sussex bowler hadn't played for England since 2024 due to concerns over his fitness and form, and it had looked as if his Test career was over.

But a brilliant start to the County Championship season saw him earn a shot in the Test team, and he claimed seven wickets across the two innings, including three in an over to put England in charge.

And after the first day, it was all a bit too much for his wife, who was very emotional.

Robinson will now look to cement his place in the team and ensure this isn't just a brief spell.

BANGLADESH BEAT PAKISTAN BY 78 RUNS TO CLINCH HISTORIC TEST SERIES WIN

Taijul Islam’s six-for helps Bangladesh bowl out the visitors for 328 in their first home series win over Pakistan.

Bangladesh have sealed a historic home Test series win over Pakistan after handing the visitors a 78-run defeat in their second Test in Sylhet.

Spinner Taijul Islam took six wickets to lead the spirited home side’s series win on the fifth day of the match on Wednesday.

Pakistan, who started the day on 316-7 while chasing a record 437, were bowled out for 328 in the first session after Mohammad Rizwan hit a valiant 94.

It was Bangladesh’s first Test series win at home against Pakistan and their second successive sweep after their 2-0 triumph on Pakistani soil in 2024.

Wicketkeeper Rizwan kept Pakistan in the hunt for an unlikely win with a 166-ball stay after the visitors had slumped to 162-5 on day four.

Rizwan put on an eighth-wicket partnership of 54 with overnight partner Sajid Khan, who made 28.

Taijul broke through to dismiss Sajid for his 18th Test five-wicket haul, and Shoriful Islam had Rizwan caught in the next over to end Pakistan’s resistance.

Taijul took the final wicket of Khurram Shahzad to return figures of 6-120 and trigger Bangladesh celebrations.

The left-arm spinner also took 3-67 during Pakistan’s first-innings 232.

Bangladesh wicketkeeper Litton Das scored 126 in their first-innings 278.

Veteran batsman Mushfiqur Rahim scored 137 in the second to guide Bangladesh to 390, with contributions from Mahmudul Hasan Joy (52) and Litton (69).

Bangladesh, led by Najmul Hossain Shanto, won the opening Test by 104 runs.

HOW CAN KOHLI CAN STILL BREAK SACHIN TENDULKAR'S 100-CENTURY RECORD AFTER T20I AND TEST RETIREMENT

• After his Test retirement, Virat Kohli is still in the race to break Sachin Tendulkar’s iconic record of 100 international centuries.

• With 82 international hundreds to his name, Kohli needs 18 more centuries to equal the Master Blaster’s iconic milestone.

Virat Kohli’s journey toward cricketing immortality isn’t over just yet. After bidding farewell to T20Is last year following India’s title win in the 2024 T20 World Cup, and recently announcing his retirement from Test cricket, Kohli now has just one international format left—ODIs. The big question on everyone’s mind: can he still break Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 100 international centuries?

With 82 international hundreds to his name (51 in ODIs, 30 in Tests, and 1 in T20Is), Kohli needs 18 more centuries to equal the Master Blaster’s iconic milestone. But with ODIs being the only active format for him now, the road ahead is steep—and limited.

How can Virat Kohli reach 100 centuries? 

A realistic roadmap

As mentioned above, Kohli currently sits on 82 international centuries and in the current landscape where ODIs are played less frequently, Kohli’s task becomes even more challenging. With the rise of T20 leagues and a packed Test calendar, bilateral ODI series are becoming rarer. This reduces the number of opportunities he gets to bat and convert starts into big scores. As a result, every innings now carries more weight in his quest to reach the 100-century mark. Now let’s understand how this is possible, or at least not entirely impossible:

1. ODI format still suits his game

Kohli has always thrived in the 50-over format. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest ODI batters ever, with a ridiculous average of over 57.88. Even at 36, his ability to pace an innings, rotate strike, and finish games remains unmatched. His 51 ODI hundreds have come across 292 matches. That’s one century every 5.7 innings on average.

But in recent years, his frequency has improved. In 2023 alone, he scored 6 ODI tons, including three in the World Cup—proof that his hunger hasn’t declined. If he keeps scoring at the same strike rate, he could realistically notch 15–18 centuries in the next 3–4 years, provided he plays consistently.

2. The 2027 World Cup

If Kohli chooses to continue till the 2027 ODI World Cup, he’ll have at least 3 more full years in the format. India will play around 27 ODIs until then, and more could be added based on bilateral series, Asia Cups, and Champions Trophy-like tournaments. Assuming Kohli features in 25 out of those 27 ODIs, and plays 6–8 ODIs annually after that, fans may see him at 35–40 ODIs before retirement.

To get to 100 tons from 82, he needs 18 ODI centuries in 35–40 matches — a near impossible rate for most, but not entirely out of Kohli’s range if he has a purple patch.

3. Kohli and big tournaments – A love story

Kohli’s biggest strength is his ability to perform in ICC tournaments. With the World Cup 2027 on the calendar, India are set to play high-pressure games—exactly the kind where Kohli thrives. In the 2023 ODI World Cup, he smashed 3 centuries, and if he can continue that trend in ICC events, a handful of hundreds could come just from global tournaments.

4. Kohli’s fitness and mental resilience

Few athletes in world sport match Kohli’s fitness standards. At 36, he’s in better shape than many 28-year-olds, which means he can continue playing at peak levels for a few more years. Mentally, he’s shown time and again that he’s built for longevity and comebacks. With the burden of multi-format cricket now lifted, Kohli can focus entirely on one format, reduce burnout, and maximize output.

India captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday announced his retirement from Test cricket ahead of the team’s tour of England starting next month, but will continue to play the shorter 50-over format.

In 67 Tests, Rohit scored 4 301 runs including 12 centuries with a best of 212 against South Africa in 2019 and an average of over 40.

“It’s an absolute honour to represent my country in whites,” the 38-year-old Rohit wrote on Instagram.

“Thank you for all the love and support over the years.”

INDIA NEED A NEW TEST SKIPPER

Rohit, who quit T20 internationals along with Virat Kohli after India’s World Cup triumph in Barbados last year, recently led the team to an ODI Champions Trophy title in Dubai.

India will begin a five-Test series in England in June-July and the team now needs a new Test skipper.

Rohit’s last Test was in Melbourne last year when India lost to Australia by 184 runs.

He stood down as captain in the fifth Test in Sydney due to poor batting form but India went on to lose the match and the five-match series 2-1.

Rohit managed just 31 runs in five innings of his three outings Down Under and the Indian media speculated that he could retire from Test cricket after the series.

Rohit began his Test career in 2013, but it was five years later that he came into his own in the five-day format as a swashbuckling opener and later took over as captain from Kohli.

Joe Root is now in fifth position on Test cricket's all-time list of run-scorers after he became England's record holder by surpassing Sir Alastair Cook's total. Root achieved the impressive feat during day three of the first Test against Pakistan in Multan. The Yorkshire player - who made his Test debut in 2012 - has also captained the side on a record 64 occasions.

He surpassed Sir Alastair Cook’s tally of 12,472 runs on day three of the first Test against Pakistan in Multan.

Root achieved the feat by hitting a straight drive past bowler Aamir Jamal for four.

The Yorkshire player has reached the impressive milestone in 14 Tests fewer than it took Cook to get to the total he ended his career with.

Root made his Test debut in December 2012, when he scored 73 in his first innings against India.

He has gone on to hit 34 centuries in the format, with the first of those coming against New Zealand in 2013.

Root’s highest Test match score to date is 254, which he hit against Pakistan in 2016 at Old Trafford. That is one of the five times he has reached a double century.

The former England captain - who has led his country in 64 Tests - is now fifth on the all-time list of run-scorers in the format.

India’s legendary Sachin Tendulkar tops the list with 15,921 runs, ahead of Australia’s Ricky Ponting, South Africa’s Jacques Kallis and India’s Rahul Dravid, who complete the top four.

With Dravid on 13,288 runs, Root will no doubt be aiming to chase him down too.

It was just the second WTC final played and the first contested by Australia, but India have now played in and lost both, this time by 209 runs. Australia dominated the match from the opening day after being sent in by Indian captain Rohit Sharma."

"Steve Smith claimed this victory had been the aim of the team since the current cycle began two years ago.

“We can’t celebrate as hard as we would like to with a game not too far away, but we have to be proud of our achievements for sure,” he said.

“A lot of hard work has gone into the past few years to get into this situation to play in the final."

“We have dominated the game from day one. Maybe let them back in in glimpses, but outside of that, it was a pretty well-polished performance.”

Boland was the pick of the fast bowlers with 3-46 from 16 overs to go with his two first winnings wickets and an overall economy rate of under three for the match. His two wickets in three balls on Sunday to remove the dangerous Virat Kohli (46) and Ajay Jadeja (0) set Australia on course to claim all seven wickets in the first session.

Nathan Lyon (4-41) and Mitchell Starc (2-77) cleaned up the tail.

Boland is usually Australia’s fourth-choice pace bowler behind the big three of captain Pat Cummins, Starc and Josh Hazlewood, however Cummins insisted leading into this Test that there was no pecking order."

If that is the case it would appear impossible to leave Boland out of the first Ashes Test at Edgbaston, beginning on Friday.

Starc enhanced his chances of retaining his place with a late flurry wickets, leaving Hazlewood likely to be the unlucky candidate given his injury history over the past couple of years. He has been declared fit after a minor side niggle, but his lack of cricket may prove a decisive factor in selection.

Boland claimed five wickets for the game with an economy rate of under three an over, while Starc took four while conceding more than five an over.

Significantly, Cummins preferred to share the new ball with Boland ahead of Starc at the start of India’s second innings on Saturday and again when play resumed on Sunday. It is just the second time since 2015 that Starc has not opened the bowling."

Ajinkya Rahane struck an unbeaten 89 on comeback as India reached 260 for 6 at lunch on the third day of their World Test Championship final against Australia here on Friday.

Resuming the day at 151 for five with 318 runs behind Australia's first innings total of 469, India lost wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat (5) early when Scott Boland cleaned him up. But the pair of Rahane and Shardul Thakur (36 not out) led India's resistance in the remainder of the first session."

Rahane and Thakur added 108 runs for the unbroken seventh wicket though India still trail Australia by 209 runs in the first innings.

Rahane, who was dropped on 72 by David Warner off Pat Cummins, has faced 122 balls for his unbeaten 89 with 11 fours and one six.

Thakur copped a few blows on his hands and managed to reach 36 not out from 83 balls with four fours, as he was also dropped by Cameron Green off Cummins while he was batting on eight."
