'CARLOS, I'M SORRY!': SABALENKA'S HILARIOUS GAFFE, CALLS CARLOS ALCARAZ 'JANNIK' LIVE ON TV

In a hilarious gaffe during live television, World No. 1 women’s tennis player and US Open women’s singles winner Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus mistakenly referred to the new World No. 1 men’s singles player, Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, by his arch-rival’s name, Jannik Sinner. This left everyone present in stitches as Sabalenka called Alcaraz “Jannik”.
The incident occurred on NBC’s Today in America, where she was showing off her US Open trophy alongside men’s champion Alcaraz. During an interview celebrating their respective triumphs, Sabalenka was explaining a video trend on the social media app TikTok when she had the slip-up.
“I have a TikTok to do with Jannik… Ah, Jannik,” she said, before realising her harmless mistake. Embarrassed by her words, Sabalenka quickly covered her mouth before reaching for Alcaraz.
“Carlos. Carlos, I’m so sorry. OK, never mind, no TikTok is coming,” she said before bursting out in laughter.
Earlier on Sunday, Sinner’s two-year hard-court Grand Slam dominance came to an end in New York as his arch-nemesis, Alcaraz, amped up the heat to clinch his sixth Slam title, trouncing the defending champion while also reclaiming the World No. 1 ranking. Alcaraz, who holds a commanding head-to-head record over the 24-year-old Italian, was bracing up for their third Grand Slam final meeting of 2025, an Open Era record, on the back of a flawless run throughout the competition without dropping a set. Though Sinner managed to clinch the third set of the contest, Alcaraz remained the overwhelming favourite as he became the youngest man to win multiple Grand Slam titles on three different surfaces.
Meanwhile, Sabalenka continued her dominance at Flushing Meadows, defending her women’s singles title against local favourite Amanda Anisimova.

Chris Evert admits she was surprised by Aryna Sabalenka’s post-match comments following her French Open final defeat to Coco Gauff.
Sabalenka was quick out of the blocks in the women’s showpiece match at Roland Garros as she went a double break up in the first set, but her American opponent pulled it back and took it to a tie-breaker before the world No 1 eventually claimed the set.
The conditions started playing havoc with the wind having a big impact and Gauff upped her game even further as she started to dominate.
The world No 2 eventually claimed a 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4 victory to secure her second Grand Slam title following her success at the 2023 US Open where she also beat the Belarusian.
Sabalenka was very emotional during the post-match presentation interview as she described it as her “worst final”.
Later in the press conference, she again lamented her performance, saying: “It was really honestly the worst tennis I’ve played in the last, I don’t know, in the last I don’t know how many months.
“Conditions were terrible, and she simply was better in these conditions than me. I think it was the worst final I ever played.”
Sabalenka ended Iga Swiatek’s title defence in the semi-final with a three-set win and she also stated that the Pole “would have won the final”.
She added: “I don’t know, I think Iga – if Iga would win me another day, I think she would go out today and she would get the win.
“Yeah, it just hurts. Honestly hurts. I’ve been playing really well, and then in the last match, go out there and perform like I did, that’s hurt.”
Former world No 1 Evert was unimpressed by the three-time Grand Slam winner’s comments as she felt Sabalenka should have come up with a gameplan to counter the conditions.
“When you heard Aryna say it was the worst [final], I was like wow! You have to adjust,” the 18-time Grand Slam winner is quoted as saying by The Tennis Gazette.
“It’s the same on both sides. You have to make that adjustment. If you are number one in the world or number two in the world, you should know how to play on windy days by now.
“It was swirling. Well, you know what, then you really have to get ready and prepared for the shot quicker and you have to be aware of that and make the court smaller and not go for the lines all the time if it’s that windy.
“It was the same for both of them and I think Coco really adapted to it much better.”

Novak Djokovic fought off another feisty challenge to reach the third round of the Australian Open on Wednesday after women's champion Aryna Sabalenka made more serene progress and Ons Jabeur crashed out at the hands of a schoolgirl.
Top 10 seeds Coco Gauff, Barbora Krejcikova, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Jannik Sinner, Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas all got through their second-round contests in varying conditions as Melbourne lived up to its reputation for changeable weather.
Rain washed out more than three hours of play on the outer courts at the start of the day but the skies had long cleared by the time Djokovic took to the court where he has won 10 of his 24 Grand Slam titles.
As in his four-hour first round clash against qualifier Dino Prizmic, the 36-year-old Serbian looked in full pomp in the opening set against Australian Alexei Popyrin but lost the second.
The aggressive Popyrin, backed by a crowd in full voice, had set points in the third set but Djokovic saved them and, riled by an exchange with a fan in the crowd, ran out a 6-3 4-6 7-6(4) 6-3 winner.

Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka does not expect the new season to be easier despite her breakthrough performances at the Grand Slams in 2023, but the world number two said her fearless approach can help her handle any challenges.
Sabalenka claimed her maiden Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park earlier this year and finished runner-up to Coco Gauff at the U.S. Open to briefly top the rankings. She also reached semi finals of the French Open and Wimbledon.

History repeated itself as Belarusian second seed Aryna Sabalenka pummeled France's Clara Burel 6-1 6-1 in the third round of the U.S. Open on Saturday, ending the unseeded player's New York campaign in dominant fashion.
Sabalenka had swatted aside Burel in the third round a year ago and once again the Australian Open winner would not be denied as she fired off 22 winners in a brisk one-hour affair at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
Sabalenka will next play 13th seed Daria Kasatkina, who beat Belgian qualifier Greet Minnen 6-3 6-4.
"I'm super happy with the performance today. I think I played really great tennis today," she told reporters.
The perennial major contender Sabalenka demoralised her opponent from the start, winning the first five straight games in the opening set, where she never faced a break point.
Burel showed some signs of life when she fended off a pair of break points in the opening game of the second set but Sabalenka quickly retook control.
A semi-finalist in New York the last two years, Sabalenka faced her only break point of the match in the sixth game of the second set but extinguished Burel's chances with a well-placed drop shot.
Burel thrust her racquet to the ground in frustration after sending a forehand shot out in the final game of the second set, before Sabalenka broke her serve for the match with a backhand winner.
Sabalenka said mental toughness was the key to surviving the two-week grind at the U.S. Open.
Looking to beat Kasatkina for the second time in less than three weeks, Sabalenka said: Always tricky matches against her. She's playing great tennis. Moving really well.
"I feel like I have to be focused and I don't have to overrush things against her. I just have to stay calm and just wait for the opportunity and take it."

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz survived his first big test at this year's Wimbledon on Saturday and women's champion Elena Rybakina doused British hopes as the big names moved through the gears into the second week.
Despite more rain on day six, the slow-burner tournament began to heat up with women's second seed Aryna Sabalenka, two-time champion Petra Kvitova and last year's runner-up Ons Jabeur all reaching the last 16.
In the men's draw, third seed Daniil Medvedev and fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas both swept through while 2021 runner-up Matteo Berrettini set up a showdown with Alcaraz.
