PERU PLAYER 'SEPARATED' FROM NEW CLUB AFTER ABUSE ALLEGATIONS

Peru international Christian Cueva has been "permanently separated" from his club, Cienciano, just 48 hours after signing for the team after accusations of domestic abuse were made against him.

Cueva's wife, Pamela Lopez, said in a television interview that she had reported her husband to the police, alleging that he had physically and psychologically attacked her on repeated occasions.

Cueva, 32, had signed for the Cusco-based club on Sunday on a deal until the end of the season and had yet to make his debut.

"After concluding the internal investigation process, footballer Christian Cueva has been permanently separated from the club," a club statement said on Tuesday. "This decision has been made in strict compliance with our values and to preserve the integrity of the institution."

The former Rayo Vallecano and Sao Paulo midfielder had been without a club since his contract with Saudi side Al Fateh ended in February.

Cueva, who was part of Peru's squad at the recent Copa America, has made 100 appearances for his country.

Canoeist Eriberto Gutierrez wants Peru to make good on laws that it enacted to boost the country's sporting achievements after the Pan Am Games medallist rejected an award from his hometown due to what he said was a lack of support.

Gutierrez was invited to a ceremony celebrating the city of Abancay's heritage last Saturday, where the 30-year-old was to be feted for his bronze medal in the kayak cross competition at the Games in Santiago last month.

However, after receiving a diploma and medal at the event, Gutierrez hit out at Mayor Raul Pena before leaving the awards on the floor.

MESSI DOUBLE GIVES ARGENTINA 2-0 WIN OVER PERU

Lionel Messi become the all-time top scorer in South American World Cup qualifying on Tuesday after netting both goals in Argentina's 2-0 win over Peru in Lima.

Messi, who was included in the squad despite having been sidelined in recent weeks with a muscle problem, came on as a substitute in Thursday's 1-0 win over Paraguay but was on the pitch from the start of the game in Lima.

MARQUINHOS EARNS BRAZIL LATE WIN OVER PERU

Brazil made it two wins from two in 2026 World Cup qualifying on Tuesday after a late goal from Marquinhos earned them a 1-0 win over Peru in Lima.

Brazil, who crushed Bolivia 5-1 at home on Friday, moved level on six points with rivals Argentina at the top of the South American qualifying standings.

Interim coach Fernando Diniz's side dominated possession and attacking opportunities early in the game but Raphinha and Richarlison saw goals ruled out for offside in the first half.
