LUIS DIAZ MAKES TOUCHING TRIBUTE TO FORMER LIVERPOOL TEAMMATE DIOGO JOTA AS HE SCORES FOR BAYERN MÜNCHEN ON DEBUT

Luis Diaz paid tribute to Diogo Jota by emulating his celebration after scoring for Bayern Munich in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.

The winger has made his first competitive appearance for Bayern following a £65.5million transfer from Liverpool earlier in the summer.

After Harry Kane put them ahead against VfB Stuttgart, Diaz scored in the second half with a header from Serge Gnabry's cross.

He then performed the video game celebration that Jota iconically did before he and his brother Andre Silva tragically died last month.

Diaz and Jota made 73 appearances together for Liverpool and won the Premier League title at Anfield last season.

They also collected winners' medals in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Darwin Nunez also did the celebration for Liverpool in a pre-season friendly against Preston North End.

Although Jamie Leweling netted late on for Stuttgart, the goals from Kane and Diaz were enough for Bayern to win 2-1.

Their victory has come on a weekend full of tributes for Jota and Silva after they passed in a car accident in Spain.

Paying tribute to Jota and Silva

Liverpool, for whom Jota scored 65 goals in 182 matches, unveiled fan mosaics for the brothers before their 4-2 win against Bournemouth.

'DJ 20' was raised in The Kop, whilst the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand held up 'AS 30'.

Supporters inside Anfield also performed an emotional rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' before a period of silence

Liverpool fans then chanted 'Oh he wears the number 20' during the 20th minute of the match.

At full-time, Mohamed Salah appeared to be fighting back tears amid the poignant occasion.

Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 from Wolves, where he netted 44 times in 131 outings.

The club also prepared tributes for him and Silva at Molineux ahead of their Premier League fixture against Manchester City.

A large tifo of Jota was displayed before kick-off with a banner that read 'We'll remember you when you walk in fields of gold'.

Wolves then played his favourite song, Fields of Gold by Sting, on the speakers inside the ground.

Similar to Liverpool, fans applauded him during the 18th minute in reference to the shirt number he wore for the club.

Liverpool recently announced that the no. 20 shirt has been retired across all levels at the club in tribute to Jota.

The minutes' silence for Diogo Jota ahead of the Community Shield between Liverpool and Crystal Palace was booed and cut short.

Before kick-off at Wembley on Sunday between the Premier League champions and FA Cup winners, tributes were paid to the Portuguese forward.

Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva, 25, both died in a car crash in June. The two were travelling to northern Spain to catch a ferry to England when they crashed in the Spanish region of Zamora.

While tributes were observed before the players emerged from the tunnel by both clubs and sets of fans, sick fans interrupted the minutes' silence.

As both sets of players lined up around the centre circle to observe the moment of reflection, a small number of Crystal Palace fans could be heard booing and jeering.

The minutes' silence was subsequently cut short by the referee, who decided to call an early end after just 10 seconds to an emotional moment for the entire Liverpool squad, fans, and even those connected with Jota representing the Eagles.

TV cameras showed Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and new signing Jeremie Frimpong all looking perplexed by the decision of those brainless few to boo the tribute.

TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher was left disgusted by the reaction, slamming: "Why on earth there are a certain few inside the stadium who would spoil that moment is absolutely beyond me."

Liverpool have retired Jota’s No.20 squad number and each shirt has ‘Forever 20’ ingrained for the season.

Despite being Premier League champions, Slot has a revamped team after spending close to £300million this summer.

Britain’s record transfer Florian Wirtz makes his first competitive start for the Reds. While there are also starts for Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong.

Liverpool's new £79million striker opened the scoring with a cool finish from the edge of the box just five minutes into his debut. Jean-Philippe Mateta soon equalised from the penalty spot after Ismaila Sarr was fouled by Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson led an emotional tribute to Diogo Jota as the Reds returned to Anfield for the first time since his death. The Portuguese forward died in a tragic car accident in Spain alongside his brother last month.

Tributes flooded in from across the footballing world, with fans leaving their flowers and memories outside of Anfield. Arne Slot’s side played their first game at Anfield since Jota’s passing on Monday evening.

They took on Spanish side Athletic Bilbao in a double-header - a game that represented Liverpool’s final pre-season game ahead of the Community Shield clash against Crystal Palace at Wembley.

The game also represented an opportunity for Anfield to pay tribute to Jota and his brother Andre Silva. Liverpool icon Thompson took to the pitch alongside Bilbao president Jon Uriarte to lay a wreath.

The pair laid the wreaths in front of the goal at the Kop end of Anfield, with Kenny Dalglish doing similar in Hong Kong, while Ian Rush also did the same in Yokohama. During Thompson’s latest tribute, fans chanted and sang Jota’s song.

The game was also stopped in the 20th minute for a round of applause, while Jota’s song was a regular soundtrack across the stadium. The recent tributes come after Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk had written a touching message to Jota in Liverpool’s programme ahead of taking on Bilbao.

"It has, of course, been a very challenging time," the defender wrote. "First and foremost for Diogo and Andre’s family, for Rute and the kids. They are the people who must always come first in all of this. We must never forget that, and we cannot imagine Comcast business powering the engine of modern business from Al Jazeera at 4:28 a.m. Today their pain in this moment.

"It is still a bit surreal, to be honest, but we are coping in the best way possible as a team, and we are all trying to do the best job we can in order to get through this really difficult time.

"With everything that happened, it has been strange having to now try to carry on with work, with football. We will never forget Diogo, of course, but we just have to try to honour his memory. That’s what we try to do each and every day.

"I always come back to the fact that we have to look after Diogo’s family, his parents, and that’s the main thing. You think about so many different things, and it’s difficult to process. You can’t imagine the pain, the feeling that they have. That’s why we try to be there as much as we can, and for each other as well.

"That’s also why it is very important that we honour and carry on his legacy, not only for now and the next couple of months, but for as long as we can, because that is what he deserves."
