Ronnie O’Sullivan has made the highest break in professional snooker by hitting a 153 at the World Open in China.
The 50-year-old achieved the feat after leaving Ryan Day in a snooker to begin the opening frame of their quarter-final and the Welshman’s failed escape attempt gave O’Sullivan a free ball.
That allowed the seven-times world champion to start with a green followed by an opening black, scoring eight points before beginning on the reds.
O’Sullivan then potted 15 reds, accompanied by 13 further blacks and two pinks, before clearing up the colours for a record 153.
He has scored a record 17 maximum 147 breaks in his career, and the 153 left him two points short of the highest possible break of 155. The only previous break exceeding 147 in the professional game was a 148 scored by Jamie Burnett, in UK Championship qualifying in 2004.
“Big shout out to all the people who have messaged me and congratulated me on the 153,” O’Sullivan said in a video posted on X. “It was a pretty cool moment, really happy to do it. Thank you to everyone out there who has supported me.”
His rapid start paved the way for a dominant 5-0 victory as O’Sullivan stormed into the semi-finals in Yushan.

CHINA ALIVE IN WORLD CUP QUALIFYING DESPITE SOUTH KOREA LOSS

China squeezed into the third round of Asia's preliminaries for the 2026 World Cup by the narrowest of margins on Tuesday despite slipping to a 1-0 loss at the hands of South Korea in Seoul.
Indonesia, North Korea, Kuwait and Kyrgyzstan also confirmed their progress to the next round with the Chinese qualifying as runners-up in Group C behind the South Koreans after Thailand could only register a 3-1 victory over Singapore.
Needing to win by three clear goals, or to score at least four with a two-goal victory margin to climb above the Chinese in the standings, Masatada Ishii's side fell agonisingly short of a spot in the draw for the next round on June 27.
Suphanat Mueanta put Thailand in front eight minutes before the break but Thailand-based forward Ikhsan Fandi levelled 12 minutes after the restart for the Singaporeans.
A frantic Thailand pushed forward as time ticked down with Poramet Arjvirai and Jaroensak Wonggorn scoring in the last 11 minutes to take their side closer to their target, but ultimately the War Elephants fell short.
The Chinese had earlier lost in Seoul World Cup Stadium when Paris Saint-Germain winger Lee Kang-in scored from close range in the 61st minute to leave Branko Ivankovic and his players sweating on the outcome of the game in Bangkok.
Indonesia, meanwhile, confirmed their progress to the third round for the first time with a comfortable 2-0 win in Group F over the Philippines at a buoyant Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.
Netherlands-born midfielder Thom Haye put the home side in front 32 minutes into the game when he bent a perfectly judged right foot shot into the top corner of Kevin Mendoza's goal.
The victory was secured through a glanced header by Rizky Ridho in the 56th minute that gave the unprotected Mendoza little chance as Indonesia confirmed a second-place finish behind already-qualified Iraq.
Japan cruised to a 5-0 win over Syria in Hiroshima that fatally damaged the hopes of Hector Cuper's side, who were overtaken in Group B by North Korea as a result of Ri Jo Guk's hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Myanmar in Vientiane.
Kuwait finished second in Group A when Eid Al-Rashidi scored in the 81st minute to hand Afghanistan a 1-0 loss, with the Gulf state taking the runners-up spot behind Asian champions Qatar, who ended India's hopes with a 2-1 win in Al-Rayyan.
Kyrgyzstan confirmed their progress with a 1-1 draw with Group D winners Oman, who had already sealed their spot in the third round as Eldiyar Zarypbekov saw his 19th minute opener cancelled out by Abdul Aziz Khalfan's deflected strike.
The draw for the next round will feature 18 nations, including regular World Cup qualifiers Japan, South Korea, Australia, Iran and Saudi Arabia, who had all secured their berths ahead of Tuesday's group matches.
Uzbekistan, Jordan, Bahrain and Palestine have also qualified for the third phase, which will see teams compete for six of the continent's eight guaranteed spots in the finals in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

RAIN FORCES MIXED GRID FOR CHINESE GP, SPRINT AS NORRIS TAKES POLE

SHANGHAI, China -- Lando Norris will start the first sprint race of the 2024 season from first position after a wet sprint shootout session in China resulted in a mixed grid.
Norris' best time was initially deleted for exceeding track limits at the final corner of his previous lap, briefly moving Lewis Hamilton to first place, but it was reinstated by race control moments later.
Hamilton will start from second place for Mercedes on the jumbled grid ahead of Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso in third.
Championship leader Max Verstappen could only manage the fourth fastest time after two of his three attempts in the wet final session were deleted for track limits infringements.
The 19-lap sprint race will take place on Saturday morning in China ahead of qualifying for the full-length grand prix, and carries points from first place to eighth.
Although of less significance than full grand prix qualifying, the result marks the first time a McLaren has started from the front of an F1 grid this year and the first time since Norris took pole in the sprint shootout in Brazil last year.
"It was [wild]. I am extremely happy, big thanks to the team. It was tricky," Norris said afterwards. "I got a good final lap. I am happy, sad it is not for a proper qualifying, but good enough.
"They were conditions where you've just got to risk a lot, you've just got to push, build tyre temperature and so forth. I was a little bit nervous that I made a few mistakes, started to aquaplane quite a bit, but it's good fun.
"It gets your heart going, and to end up on top is exactly what we wanted. So a nice surprise and a good position for tomorrow," he added.
Lando Norris took pole as his flying lap time was reinstated by the stewards before the end of the session.
Meanwhile Hamilton said: "It was very tricky, tricky conditions, not a lot of grip as you saw for everyone. But yeah, so happy. As soon as I saw the rain coming, I was getting excited.
"Naturally in dry conditions, we're not quick enough, so when the rain came, and I thought I'd have a bit of a better opportunity, and that's kind of when it all came alive."
Rain started to fall at the end of SQ2 and by the start of SQ3 it had forced all drivers to switch from slick tyres to intermediates.
Charles Leclerc, who qualified seventh, went off the track at Turn 3 on the first lap out of the pits, while a number of drivers had lap times deleted due to track limit violations.
Verstappen ran off the road at Turn Six on his first attempt and again at the final corner on his second attempt. He finally completed a single clean lap before the chequered flag, but for the first time this year it was not fast enough to secure the front row of the grid.
"It was incredibly slippery," Verstappen said. "I struggled a lot to get the temperature in the tyres, it was very difficult to keep the car on-track, and it never really switched on for me.
"It was just like driving on ice. That's why I think it was quite deserved where we are in qualifying, because it's not really working for me in the wet, even though I think the dry we look quite good.
"So of course I'm quite happy with that."
Norris ran off the track at the final corner ahead of his fastest lap, which can often be seen as gaining an advantage for the following lap as well, but his best effort was quickly reinstated by the FIA in line with the race director's notes for the weekend.
Carlos Sainz will start fifth on the grid for Ferrari ahead of Sergio Perez for Red Bull, Leclerc's Ferrari in seventh and Norris' McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri in eighth.
Valtteri Bottas secured ninth on the grid for Sauber ahead of Chinese driver Zhou Guanyu, who set the tenth fastest time in front of a jubilant home crowd.
The start of the second part of qualifying was delayed after a grass fire broke out at the side of the track near Turn Five. A similar incident happened during the morning practice session at Turn Seven, with video evidence suggesting the fires were ignited by sparks from the titanium skid plates on the underside of the cars.
The short delay to Q2 coincided with the arrival of light rain, although all drivers were able to complete a flying lap on slick tyres before heavier rain arrived at the end of the session. The downpour at the end of Q2 locked positions in place from the drivers' first attempts, with Zhou beating George Russell to a place in Q3 by 0.038s.
Haas drivers Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg will line up 12th and 13th ahead of Daniel Ricciardo's RB in 14th and the Aston Martin of Lance Stroll in 15th.
Pierre Gasly missed the cut for Q2 by less than a tenth of a second but qualified 0.088s faster than Alpine teammate Esteban Ocon, whose car was fitted with the team's latest updates. The new parts and lighter chassis on Ocon's car are expected to bring a step in performance for the struggling French team, but could not be manufactured in time to be fitted to both cars this weekend.
Alex Albon was 18th fastest for Williams ahead of RB's Yuki Tsunoda in 19th and the second Williams driver, Logan Sargeant, in last.

TENSIONS BETWEEN CHINA AND NBA ARE 'WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE' - NETS OWNER

Joe Tsai, owner of the Brooklyn Nets basketball team, said the NBA is “in a very good place” in its relationship with China, four years after Beijing took games off air following remarks about the 2019 Hong Kong protests by a team executive.
At a sports convention in Macau on Friday, Tsai said the U.S. basketball league and China, home to 300 million NBA fans, have mended their relationship.
Beijing suspended the broadcast of NBA games in 2019 after Daryl Morey, then general manager of the Houston Rockets team, tweeted in support of anti-government protests in Hong Kong. Chinese state television only resumed broadcasting games about a year later.

CHINA 🇨🇳 TO HOST OPENING TWO EVENTS IN 2024 DIAMOND LEAGUE

The 2024 Diamond League will begin its 15-stop season with two meets in China, in Xiamen and Shanghai, in April while Brussels will stage the two-day season finale in September, organisers said on Monday.
Last year's Diamond League was also scheduled to have 15 meets but the Shanghai stop was cancelled after COVID-19 restrictions caused delays in the renovation of the venue.
Xiamen will host the opening event on April 20, a week before Shanghai returns to the calendar for the first time since 2019.
