There are few in the world of squash who have illustrated longevity and excellence more than Mohamed ElShorbagy — and today he celebrates 15 consecutive years inside the world’s top 10.
ElShorbagy first earned a spot in the top 10 in October 2010, and after falling out of it the next month reclaimed the place in December and never looked back. Over the years, he claimed the World No.1 ranking on six separate occasions and spent more than 51 weeks at the summit — a mark of dominance few manage to sustain.
But consistency at the top is not just about survival — it’s about adapting to evolving competition and staying hungry. ElShorbagy has done exactly that: across eras he has faced and bested multiple generations of top players, from veterans of the late 2000s to rising stars in the 2020s. That adaptability, coupled with his trademark intensity and court craft, has allowed him to continue competing — and winning — even as the sport has evolved around him. In fact, his 50th PSA Tour title came as recently as 2024 at the China Open, proving that he still remains a threat at 34-years-old.
Reaching and holding a place among the world’s best for 15 years consecutively — through injuries, new contenders, changes in fitness, and the unrelenting grind of the tour — represents more than just personal longevity. It makes ElShorbagy a genuine modern icon of the game: a benchmark for consistency, durability and excellence.
“It’s nice to have that stat happen here in Hong Kong,” said ElShorbagy.
“It’s an event I really enjoy playing. I have really good memories here. To be here today is something to be proud of. I’m at the stage of my career where I can look back at these things and enjoy them. When I went through them at the time, I couldn’t quite enjoy them, because it was always about the next match.”
